It's ok, even if you get a little rusty you'd be surprised how much you remember. And practicing every day really helps commit things time long term memory

It’s easy to identify individual letters but it’s really hard to keep up when people finger spell quickly. I’m trying to learn sign language and your videos are the best I’ve seen so far! I just had to say, I really love your content. I'm quite new to ASL but I can now fingerspell and say some basic words and phrases thanks to your videos.
Love your videos, Ashley. The thing about hearing people is that learning to spell or read a word letter-by-letter very quickly is something we never ever have to learn. Even when reading we "chunk" the letter shapes together, and I suspect it's the same for the motions of fingerspelling. Maybe it would be useful to have exercises that start with sequences of two letters, then three, then four. That would help a lot to prevent students from trying to stare down every individual letter.
Ashley, when you say 'look at the first three letters' I turned into Google suggestions; "A-P-P...." my brain starts thinking apple, appliance, applesauce, application, Appalachian Mountains, and I don't pay attention to the rest of the letters. You will say 'Content is important' but after the third letter is important. As with any language when you first see/hear it, the signer/speaker is fast. Native signers are very smooth with the transition between letters and newbies don't see the individual letters. In England we use mostly two hands for British sign language to comucate with others (I swim as a deaf swimmer and use BSL when I can with my mum mostly)
My 4 year old and I love your videos. We have watched them all and are learning sign because of you! I would love for you to do a first responders themed video. I work as a paramedic and would love to know how to ask a patient common questions to figure out what is going on.

Hey Ashley! I know I'm a little late I just recently started watching your channel. I watch Sign Duo all the time, I love their channel and yours now too. I just wanted to share a little trick for your dad. I've been signing on and off for most of my life, and I agree, the hard part is making the word. My teacher in high school taught me a good trick though. If you're hearing, which your dad is, you should focus on the sound the letter makes. Instead of just remembering all the letters you see, try and sound the word out in your head as you're watching. Hopefully that will help your dad!
In England we don't usually finger spell each word we have a sign for each word, that we would like to use and then if we stuck we would use the ABC signing (we use two hands USA use one hand)
Really? 😯 Would you mind explaining why? Thankfully I don’t bounce when I spell but I never thought about that. Is it because it moves too much so it’s hard to focus or is there perhaps another reason?
@@nova-kiin Well, it's like trying to read a book while someone is bouncing it up and down. Makes it hard to read, and it makes you kind of dizzy. Also, thrusting your hand forward with each letter is the equivalent of shouting. It's just rude.

I noticed when I was new, I used to make signs really big and dramatic, too - apparently another trait of new signers (which I still am, but at least I've managed to not do bouncy-bouncy or huge, dramatic signing anymore!) Learning a second language, any second language, is hard on so many levels!

I need It on because I use BSL (British Sign Language) the lady uses ASL very different to mine I'm learning over again sometimes difficult for me to Fallow so fast

For those of us that want to IMPROVE our sign language reading skills we watch the video without the words on the screen. We try understanding the video without the words, then we watch the video with the CC turned on and see how well we did. You are never going to improve if the cheat codes are always turned on. I have tried BSL, I like the idea of using both hands, some letters look similar to the actual shape of the written letter but I think single-handed is much easier for communication.
