That's awesome they help us out like that, but why throw them on the ground in the first place? It's kinda sad that a bird is more responsible than a human being is.
Many of these buds still contains chemicals, so I really hope the birds health not affected by it...But I guess training the birds are far easier than to train human to throw their buds in buds tray.

Here in Canada, we're talking about putting the same kinds of health warnings on alcoholic beverages as on cigarette packs. Amazing to learn how much the public doesn't know.

Will this be harmfull for the birds as they will be exposed to chemicals in the cigarettes. Hope this will not endanger this birds to extinction. A most modern approach is to have self discipline not to throw cigarettes in the streets. This does not address the root cause of the problem. Self discipline and penalized those who litters on the streets.
Plot twist: They already been doing this for decades, since they found out that cigarette butts can act as pesticides for their nests. The peanut rewards are just a bonus.
@@ANMA133 Thanks that gives me some ideas of how they got the numbers. But that would be inaccurate as some places might have fewer smokers. Maybe they can use the total weight of all collected butts in a year to represent the estimated amount of butts on the streets.
The crows are literally one of the smartest birds in the world, capable of differentiating the face of humans and passing on information to every crow, and you think they are unable to differentiate a twig for a cig?
I’m not sure if blue jays are just as intelligent but man those things go bonkers for peanuts whenever I put them out. If so then, they’d probably do it better.

It's an approximation. They do it by counting the amount of cigarettes in a square metre and multiply it by the size of the city.
