I'm here to give a SHOUT-OUT to every opera singer out there actually taking on the challenges of this unique and tough career track, while people who may or may not have ever had the experience sit around on their perches, comparing them to other singers, both living and dead, working and retired, and hating on them for the most picayune and utterly baseless things - as if most of these artists aren't already their own toughest critics.
BRAVI TUTTI, VOCAL WARRIORS. I SEE YOU.

She had one week to learn this role to replace someone Who had dropped out. Remarkable!!

She is stupidly good. Amazing. To be in that body with that voice.... running so purely with music... what an experience that must be.

I beg to differ. Both Michelle Bradley and Angel Blue are as good as her.

@@vincec8218 I'm sorry: did I miss something? Was there a deletion of a previously derogatory comment? Did someone here actually *say* that Ms. Bradley and Ms. Blue were not exceptional singers, or are you just out here, wasting time, kicking up unnecessary race-based comparison dust for no apparent reason? Seriously, let me know. If there was no insult, then there was no call for this left-field "[begging] to differ" whatsoever.. Can we not elect to make ourselves look childish? Move on. Go help some kids in an underserved community learn to read both words and music. It's kind of urgent. Teach them they have every right to access, love, and even possibly perform these great operatic works, or possibly compose their own, if they put in the time and work. We need more authentic "making a difference" than unnecessary "begging to differ".

On paper, this looks like a disaster waiting to happen cos she has a fairly big voice and this aria requires a nimble voice.
But I went away with my jaw on the table. What a performance!

It reminds me a bit of when Renée Fleming sang this. Very similar temperament and color in the voice.

If Dame Joan, with her sizable but nimble instrument, could do this role successfully, then it's always possible. Technique is EVERYTHING, isn't it?

Good to hear a soprano with a vocal technique able to cope with this difficult piece even if her low notes are very weak. A realish trill for a change. Production and conducting bizarre - as usual these days I suppose.

I think I liked her better as Donna Anna. Here she physically resembles a hybrid June Anderson-Renée Fleming. LOL. Vocally, more reminiscent of Fleming than Anderson but, like Anderson, nothing individual or distinctive about the voice.

Disagree about the nothing distinct about her voice part. The timbre and musicality are together in a class of its own.

    • @vincec8218

I think three black sopranos currently singing have a more distinctive sound than her. They are Michelle Bradley, Latonia Moore, and Angel Blue. I have heard all three in person at San Diego Opera, Bradley as Aïda, Moore as Aïda and Madama Butterfly, and Blue as Liù. All three are superb vocalists. Sørensen has a nice voice but I don't find the sound super special. An operatic voice has to have a "face" to it in order to be truly great. Sørensen has a distinctive voice but I am not sure her timbre is instantly recognizable. Singers like Callas, Caballé, L. Price, Steber, Freni, Te Kanawa, Nilsson, and Sutherland had instantly recognizable timbres.
