It's a virtuous life; a morally good life; a healthy life. But that's not the simple strength Tolstoy is talking about. @@OranjeSchildpad yay! Another fan! I’m actually learning Russian by myself at the moment bc I want to be able to read or listen in the native language! My absolute favorite is the Death of Ivan Iliyich. I read it in college and found it to be outstandingly profound and, though pessimistic, an accurate portrayal of human nature when one person is suffering and what your “value” really is here. I read it again after being diagnosed with cancer a year later and it hit me in a whole new way. I have never related to a fictional character more than Ivan. When he described the pain and loneliness of dying and the neglect and lack of sympathy from even family, I too had a horrid, lonely experience with it, it moved me because I felt understood (22 with cancer is hard to feel understood bc everyone around you with it has 30-40 years that you didn’t get!) I wanted that sympathy he begged for. To be cared for. But it never came and I realized that if I serve no tangible purpose people don’t care and I’m a burden (I know it’s pessimistic! But it helped me to not succumb to the depression and love life the way I feel I should to be happy for me). Read it afterwards after some other events in my life and helped erase any fear of death that lingered with me and to lower my expectations of people to not get hurt. My dad is a huge fan, too, so we discuss it at length! It’s so beautiful to me and real. I joke that people always want to see representation of themselves in things, but it’s superficial. I don’t care about what they look like - can I relate to their experiences? the character I identify the most with is a 50 something year old russian man from the 19th century 😂 but it’s true! That book validates me and makes me feel understood! (So sorry for the long rant - I’m an English teacher and people hate reading so I get super excited if I can talk about it and end up rambling 😅😅) What about you?? Do you have a favorite? @@rubysoho423 That's nice, I am too learning Russian, I'm a still a beginner but my goal is to be able to speak easily when I will travel across Russia and the former USSR satellites. The death of Ivan Ilitch is the second Tolstoï I've read, and I found it very profound. I haven't been through health problems like you have, and I hope you are getting better with it, I wish you the best courage for that! But this book helps to understand the situation of some of my relatives who are in end of their life. And it also shows what I don't want to become as a man somehow. I've also started to read Dostoïevski, but it is a very different approach. I identify myself a little more in Tolstoï litterature. The funny thing is that I have been introduced to Tolstoï undirectly with the movie "Into the wild" and by searching on the character of Mc Candless. Before Tolstoï I read Thoreau's Walden, which I consider to be one of the most mind changing of my readings so far. I am a mechanical engineer, but I sometimes I feel that I am not in my place with what I am doing now. I agree with you, reading helps a lot to go though hard times and take recoil over things. Like we say here in France : "la lecture, c'est la nourriture de l'âme". I wish you all the best ! :)

I taught that book to my 11th grade students and had great discussions about mccandless and his decisions. It was a fun book to teach and have kids get introspective about. When I think of Tolstoy, I think of the character Natasha Rostova in War and Peace. Tolstoy's ideal woman. I might add, my ideal woman in classic fiction. In Gandhi's autobiography " My Experiments with Truth" he writes while he was in South Africa once he had to travel from Durban to Johannesburg in a train. That night during his travel he carried two books. One of Leo Tolstoy & other of John Ruskin. He read those two books the whole night while travelling in train. Those two books deeply influenced his thoughts so much that , the very night those two authors transformed him from Mohandaas Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi. That's why Gandhiji says powerful thoughts can transform one's individual life and the entire world as well from nothing to everything.

My dad is a huge fan, too, so we discuss it at length! It’s so beautiful to me and real. I joke that people always want to see representation of themselves in things, but it’s superficial. I don’t care about what they look like - can I relate to their experiences? the character I identify the most with is a 50 something year old russian man from the 19th century 😂 but it’s true! That book validates me and makes me feel understood! (So sorry for the long rant - I’m an English teacher and people hate reading so I get super excited if I can talk about it and end up rambling 😅😅)

The death of Ivan Ilitch is the second Tolstoï I've read, and I found it very profound. I haven't been through health problems like you have, and I hope you are getting better with it, I wish you the best courage for that! But this book helps to understand the situation of some of my relatives who are in end of their life. And it also shows what I don't want to become as a man somehow.
I've also started to read Dostoïevski, but it is a very different approach. I identify myself a little more in Tolstoï litterature.
The funny thing is that I have been introduced to Tolstoï undirectly with the movie "Into the wild" and by searching on the character of Mc Candless. Before Tolstoï I read Thoreau's Walden, which I consider to be one of the most mind changing of my readings so far.
I am a mechanical engineer, but I sometimes I feel that I am not in my place with what I am doing now.
I agree with you, reading helps a lot to go though hard times and take recoil over things.
Like we say here in France : "la lecture, c'est la nourriture de l'âme".

And I agree - ivan ilyich is a good reminder of how to live life and what to consider important. And yes! Walden has made me reconsider a lot of my life and find much more happiness in simplicity and the beauty of nature. Life changing! Its funny you mention into the wild! I taught that book to my 11th grade students and had great discussions about mccandless and his decisions. It was a fun book to teach and have kids get introspective about. One girl told me she thought of up and leaving sometimes. I told her I did a lot haha. It’s nice to talk to someone about books and philosophies for once! I don’t get to do that much!

In Gandhi's autobiography " My Experiments with Truth" he writes while he was in South Africa once he had to travel from Durban to Johannesburg in a train. That night during his travel he carried two books. One of Leo Tolstoy & other of John Ruskin. He read those two books the whole night while travelling in train. Those two books deeply influenced his thoughts so much that , the very night those two authors transformed him from Mohandaas Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi. That's why Gandhiji says powerful thoughts can transform one's individual life and the entire world as well from nothing to everything.
