Yellowed Xbox 360 Controller Restoration - Gaming Console Repair

  • Restoring & repairing Xbox 360 controller that won't turn on and that is yellowed. I bought this controller as junk from Ebay.
    I started the restoration with disassembly. The shell is closed with safety torx screws, which means normal torx bit won't fir them. To remove the trigger buttons I need to bend the plastic so I can't recommend that unless it is necessary, even though the plastic is very well bending. I also removed the sticker with isopropyl alcohol so I can reapply it once I'm finished.
    After disassembly I cleaned the parts and put the yellowed plastic in the retrobrighting box I made on my other channel. Link to the video: • Making the Ultimate Re... I used hydrogen peroxide UV-light and heat to remove the yellowing from the plastic.
    To open the battery pack I used some plastic tools, lots of force and patience. The pack is not meant to be opened but it can be done carefully without breaking anything. Once pack was opened I cleaned the battery contacts with isopropyl alcohol. Lastly the two halves were glued back together.
    Thank you for watching my video!

    Why why why is the battery cover ALWAYS the least yellowed thing on everything you fix? Is it made with a denser plastic?

    • @ToxoRetro
      @ToxoRetro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Probably because they're not handled so much with your (all humans, not just you personally 😉) greasy sweaty mitts. That's also what causes the brown earwax-like substance in the gaps where the controller shell splits open.
      Pretty rank when you think about it too much. And to think people happily play video games whilst snacking on Doritos, Cheetos and other messy snacks ending in "os". I'm considering washing my hands just thinking about the concept...

    • @AccAkut1987
      @AccAkut1987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@ToxoRetro probably a bit of your explanation and the use of a different plastic. The yellowing is mostly caused by UV radiation (as in simple sunlight), I imagine the battery compartment may be made out of something that could hold up better to potentially leaking batteries. I found info that the main shell is ABS, but no further details.

    • @ToxoRetro
      @ToxoRetro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      UV does tend to cause a different effect of yellowing@@AccAkut1987, seemingly especially with Amigas and SNESs where they go more of a bronze-ish yellow (without pulling up a Dulux colour chart, it's difficult to describe 😁) all over the exposed sides and more evenly.
      However I have 2 "Glacier" Gameboy Advances - one was my childhood one and one I bought much later 2nd hand. Both have a paler yellower yellowing along the front half of the top edge and in a inverted "U" shaped of the facing edge. The effects are worse inside the speaker grill. The chances of both being positioned in window view in approximately the same orientation is slim, as well as the fact my childhood one was usually kept in a soft case. Plus why the facing edge south of the screen as well as around the game slot area be unaffected (the back half of the top edge)? I find the upper top edge to be perfect for resting my index fingers for quick to the shoulder buttons. Everywhere else that has yellowed are where thumbs and palms sit regularly.
      We haven't mentioned air intoxicated by tobacco fumes, but then the lingering smell is difficult to remove. Nor have we mentioned cola spillage or a multitude of other factors that may leave other clues. Hand greases and UV are the most consistent possibilities as they'll affect 100% of products even to unnoticeable amounts - even sealed products will have been exposed during manufacturing processes to a minimal extent.
      As a general rule, home consoles and computers tend not to move much and have minimal hand contact, so tend to be UV related. Controllers and handhelds get handled a lot and get pretty greasy. Sure they may be left on the sunlight, but are often stowed away. General coverage would suggest UV, but more often than not tends to be localised hand contacted areas so probably sweaty grime. The battery compartment of a 360 controller (much like the base of a home console) tends to be placed on a surface when not being handled so is less likely to see sunlight, but equally is touched less as it's usually out of in-game hands reach and the fact it tends to be only used to change batteries on occasion; then they could have been removed in place of rechargeable packs - without knowing the full background we'll never truly get the answer for an individual scenario. The colouring can give more clues, but admittedly different colour items will discolour differently. Essentially we'll have clues towards a probable reason for deterioration but can only settle for a high chance.
      As for using different plastics, I'd be surprised if they did. Not ruling it out. Companies these days tend to only care that their products last at least the length of the warranty as well as minimising costs to maximise profits. Also the manufacturing of different materials can cause a greater risk of mismatching due to different rates of tolerance of thicknesses (ie a component that is give or take 10% has a bigger window of not slotting into another part with a 5% tolerance). I expected the shells are completely made from the same batch of ABS to ensure that a bottom shell which is, for example, thicker than the optimum dimensions by 0.02mm will fit a +0.02mm battery compartment and a +0.02mm top shell.

    Honestly restoring old consoles and controllers like this isn't just great for the e-waste problem and nostalgia, it's also extremely important for game preservation. I can't think of any titles off the top of my head, but I'm sure there at least some older games that can only be played on their original consoles or through emulators on PC. But, emulators don't always run great depending on your PC's hardware and software bugs, and they don't always fully replicate the original experience.
    So TLDR; thanks for the great preservation work. I want to start amassing my own console collection and fix up a bunch of systems to save them from the landfill. And also to relive parts of my childhood.

    Although I find odd tinkering videos bothe inspirational and educating, I do have 2 complaints. It's probably OCDish but, what solvent does he use for his bathing of the plastic( the initial one were he scrubs it with the Ducktor). I would probably use Dawn dish shop ( is that O.K. for ducktors skin? )and 2. I have always heard/believed it is a bad idea to pull the terminals out by the wires( he does it with the rumble mechanism). I think I heard you are supposed to use tweezers on the terminals. I've separated the wires from the terminal on a PS3 controller and had a very bad time trying to get them back in. On that note, maybe odd tinkering could link a good pair of carbon fiber tipped tweezers...?( I like supporting his videos buying by buying through his links in the description). Keep making great videos!(maybe make one for PS3 controller)

      ik there is a slim chance of anyone else replying but i agree, i think atleast for the plastic case he should have used soap and water, not isopryphol, its more thorough cleaning that way, the only reason to use isopropyl alcohol is for electrical components or stickers stuck to a case that you dont want to rip off.
