It sounds to me like they failed badly to concentrate their attacks to overwhelm defenses. For one thing they hit and damaged several cruisers without sinking them and they told of splitting up flights of 5 to attack several ships, where such flights or bigger should have all concentrated on one ship in order to certainly sink it, not maybe damage it.
