Andy carefully and meticulously came up with a plan to escape prison and get revenge on everyone who had wronged, planning for all the factors he could. He did this over the course of 19 years. And he never said a single word about it or even hinted at it to anyone, not even Red. What a legend. Thank you for the reaction.
Andy made the secret cut-out in his Bible beginning on the Book of Exodus. This is the part of the Bible that describes the Hebrews escaping slavery in Egypt.
I also find it interesting that it starts in the second book of the Bible, suggesting the warden wasn't prone to go beyond Genesis in his study. Probably reads the first two verses and goes, "Oh, yeah, that makes me a good Christian."
@B.K. Price, no see that's why it's important that Andy had already read it and memorized it. When he and the warden first meet, the hammer is already in the Bible and the Warden is holding it. Both of the verses they name then are after Exodus, so the Warden could have opened it and tried to look them up if Andy didn't already know it.

A lot of people think the Movie is about Andy. But Andy was innocent the entire time so there is no real "redemption". In actuality the redemption is about Red, the self proclaimed "only guilty man in Shawshank"
I disagree. The movie IS about Andy, and redeeming himself as a person, not as a criminal. He more than paid for his mistakes, and made a good friend along the way.

Since the arrival of DNA as evidence several hundred prisoners on life sentence or death row in the USA alone have been found to be completely innocent, this is why we got rid of hanging 60 years ago, as to ere is to be human. This is my favourite film and I never tire of watching others find it as I did.
@YT Uh... What's your point? He's saying that the justice system is run by human beings and that we make mistakes. This was known before DNA evidence, that's why we stopped hanging people.
@YT Hanging became illegal in the UK due to several cases being found to be unjust hanging of individuals who were later found to be innocent when the culprit who was guilty was caught for other similar crimes but DNA has more recently confirmed this on a more regular basis in the USA and other jurisdictions.
In case you're wondering, in the book it's revealed that Red was in prison for sabotaging his wife's car in an attempt to collect her life insurance. His attempt is successful, but his wife picked up her neighbor and child that day and they died as well, which weighed heavy in his concscience.
You two are really fun to watch. You’re both funny and smart, which makes my viewing that much more enjoyable. A few suggestions to react to if you don’t mind: Jaws (1975); Alien (1979); and The Shining (1980).
Not surprised you two liked Shawshank. When you're ready for a couple of excellent scifi movies definitely do "Interstellar" (2014) and "The Martian" (2015). If you're interested in trying a western consider doing a real classic "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), the movie that made Clint Eastwood famous. It's the first part of a well known trilogy of his, and you can decide to do the other two if you like the first one. They are, "For A Few Dollars More" (1965) and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966). Other excellent movies for your list: "The Fugitive" (1993) with an actor you're very familiar with. "Field of Dreams" (1989) a fantasy centered around baseball but you don't have to know anything about baseball to get the movie. Not by a long shot! "Apollo 13" (1995), a good historical-drama about a certain moon mission starring Tom Hanks. Enjoyed your video, especially when you saw Andy's tunnel! 😁 Which is why I suggested not to research the movie or it could have revealed that surprise. It's best not to read too deeply about movies because that info sometimes spoil surprises like John Coffey's special abilities in Green Mile which always catches newcomers off guard. One more fun movie suggestion, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) starring that same actor you're familiar with. ✌😎
I just found your channel and I want to say you did a great reaction to one of my top 10 movies. Just a bit of info on the movie. 1. He was called red because his last name was Redding. 2. The photo you see of Red when he was young is actually Morgan’s real life son. 3. His son also appeared in short clip, he was the one pretending to be fishing when the new guys came.. he had a hat on.
In the short story written by Stephen King that the movie is based on, the character of Red is actually of Irish descent, and that line comes directly from the book: why do they call you Red? Maybe because I'm Irish. Even though Morgan Freeman doesn't match the physical description of the character in the book, I love that they left that line in, it feels like a wink and a nudge for those who read the book before seeing the movie. No one could've portrayed that character better than Morgan Freeman regardless of that, I just think it's so funny every time I see the movie or a reaction when that line comes up.
$35,000 in 1947 would be like $465,000 today. In the story that the movie is based on it says that Andy was in the war and it seems like Andy is distant because of what happened during the war. Brooks went into Shawshank Prison in 1905, when he got out, it was the 1950s. The world was as different to him as 2022 would be to someone from the 1970s. He was an old man alone in a world that was alien to him.

The story of Brooks is so very sad. In prison for 50 years, he emerged into a world he didn't recognize at all. You realize that when they brought him to prison, it was in a horse-drawn wagon of some kind, and he was a relatively young man.
Escaping from the prison was great, but cleaning out all the warden's bank accounts when he did it was the cherry on top. One thing a lot of people miss...when the warden finds the Bible Andy left behind, and opens it and finds the space hollowed out for the rock hammer, it's open to the book of Exodus. Nice touch.

The actor in the film, known as red, was originally a redheaded, Irish man in the book. It doesn’t really matter, but this is a short story and a book by Stephen king, that I am sure you both I have heard of. This was in a book of short stories of three different stories. Absolutely love this movie. When the warden says, the key to salvation lies within, he had no idea that Andy's salvation was inside that very Bible the warden handed back to him. The rock hammer. Great reaction from you two!!

I knew you two would love this movie. It’s almost as if it was made for you. A couple of “Easter eggs” for you: the hammer void in the Bible starts at the Old Testament book, Exodus, which is, of course, mostly about the subjugated Jewish people (prisoners) being delivered from Egyptian bondage (the prison) by the prophet Moses (Andy). A little subtext there. Then the hole…. Follow the timeline back from when Andy did 60 days in solitary. Then you realize the hole was COMPLETE and Andy was staying there ON PURPOSE to teach Tommy. And probably for Red, ostensibly. He could have left any time he wanted but he stayed to redeem the people he was given. Once Tommy was shot, Andy pretty much realized his work was completed and he had one redemption left: THAT is why he told Red to look under the rock. Every person needs a purpose. Pretty good writing, huh?

I love y'all's content, you guys always have really genuine emotional reactions and insightful commentary. My personal view about Andy's unique behavior is that he's Autistic. A lot of his traits fit the diagnostic criteria well, in particular his way of making eye contact, his physical/facial cues, having special interests like geology, speech mannerisms, his meticulousness, and difficulties in expressing his feelings. We often don't make regular eye contact or show our emotions on our faces. We tend to have intense fascinations with specific topics, and will often speak in more monotone voices with irregular rhythm. We're usually very particular and precise with the ways we do things, and often struggle verbally communicating our feelings to other people. I really enjoyed the video! Y'all should try and watch The Iron Giant, that's a really tender story.
It's interesting to note that they needed a picture of Morgan Freeman as a young man for the photo in the file. Morgan's son came in and dressed in costume and stood for them. They used this photo of Morgan's son for the picture in the file.
The guy bribing the warden was a contractor. The prisoners were outcompeting his company because they could have them do the work for practically nothing--essentially slave labor. There was no way anyone could compete against that. The contractor bribed the warden in exchange for him moving the prisoners on a different project.
The powder that was thrown on each inmate when they first got there is for lice. Rather than examining each person for lice, they all got delousing powder thrown on them.
This movie is based on a Stephen King book and was filmed in 1993. The movie was filmed in Mansfield prison jin my state ust a few hours from where I live. The prison was being shut down at the time and good behavior prisoners were allowed to stay behind to be extras. One of my uncles was actually an extra in the movie. $35,000 in 1949 today equals $435,545.59 at 1,144.4% inflation.

This is one of my all time favourites and I enjoyed watching it again with you. You may not be aware of it but when the tree near which Red got the letter from Andy was blown over by a strong wing in July 2016, it made international news (both TV and newspapers). Irish people tend to have RED hair more than any other population... that's the joke.. he's "Black irish" - Irish people with darker features. It's an absurdity. Edit: the character was Irish in the book apparently.

Steven King is an amazing storyteller and this book translated so beautifully into a movie. It's not often that a movie lives up to the book the way this one does.

This is often listed as a favorite for many many people. It's probably on my top five. Note, my favorite is Casablanca, but that is neither here nor there.
One of the last few movies it seems to have come out. Before the onslaught and tidal wave. Of all these comic book superhero and action movies. That we've all been drowning under the last 20-25 years I guess. Not relying on CGI nonsense. But a great script, marvelous acting and a wonderful set. The ingredients that most movies used to be made with and relied on !
I am so glad you enjoyed this film! It is one of my favorites. I am not sure how aware you are of just how bad prison in America. I know many think that if a person commits a crime, they should be punished, I agree with that too, but I also think about their future victims and how their lives will be destroyed by murder or another serious crime. So prison should punish, but it should also reform in my opinion. Living for decades in a stone room only leaving 3 times a day to be worked very hard and I would feel that is punishment enough for anyone, the prisons make it very much worse. 1. Rape. Prisoners are raped in prison all the time. Why in a place where the guilty are being punished, should we allow them to rape each other. Rape is a crime no matter where it occurs. 2. For profit prisons. I hope you agree that when a prisoner serves the time the judge decided to give them they should be let free. But increasingly, privately owned prisons are influencing judges and parole boards to sentence prisoners for a longer period with out parole, and to deny parole when it's an option. This is all so the prison can keep making money. 3. Solitary confinement. While I agree that prisoners who don't follow the rules should be punished, our modern understanding of exactly what 15+ days of solitary can do to a person's mind should remove this as an option of punishment. Even 15 days of consecutive solitary can cause all kinds of permanent damage. People who spend time in solitary are more than 50% more likely to kill themselves and more than twice as likely to kill someone else. The list of other problems is as long as a phone book. But I'll put it simply by calling it what it is and (what the United Nations calls it): Torture. 4. Repeat offenders. The only thing worse than going to prison to be raped, kept past your parole date (without a hearing) and being tortured is coming back to do it again after ruining other innocent lives because of a felony you committed. They money being spent on giving prisoners options other than more crime is either insanely low, or being spent in incredibly stupid ways, or both. Think how much suffering a well executed prisoner reform system would save, and not just the prisoner's suffering, but the lives of those who suffer at their crimes. In medicine and in other things, the most effective way to spend your money on is prevention. Sorry to derail a bit, I just feel really passionate about this. Best wishes for your channel! : )

Two questions. How was the sewer line Andy broke pressurized when it was half full and the end was open? And what was Andy going to do after crawling 5 football fields if the end of the sewer line had a grate welded over it?
Quit reading reviews on movies, it spoils plot lines Etc. You should have enough faith that if it's rated 9 out of 10 you can watch it and everybody wants you to watch it.
In the beginning you make an interesting point about if someone takes a life then it should cost their own. I agree that it would be a just punishment, but as far as we don't have a justice system that is incapable of making mistakes, we cannot mete out punishments that we can never take back or repay if later it's found the ruling was wrong.

A lot of people thought this movie was going to win Movie of the year. And any other year it would have won, but it lost to a cute little movie named "Forrest Gump"!
One of the things I felt was a plot hole was how would the warden handle finances while Andy was in the hole for two months? When Andy tells him "to get someone else to run your scams," the Warden tells him that nothing stops, but that's exactly what happened when he kept Andy in the hole for two months. I can't imagine the warden would or even could suddenly stop everything. Apart from that, this was one of the best films ever made.

OMG yes, Alien and the first sequel Aliens (directors cut). I would be so on board for those. And the others were good suggestions.

A great short story that has become a timeless movie
Not surprised you two liked Shawshank. When you're ready for a couple of excellent scifi movies definitely do "Interstellar" (2014) and "The Martian" (2015).
If you're interested in trying a western consider doing a real classic "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), the movie that made Clint Eastwood famous. It's the first part of a well known trilogy of his, and you can decide to do the other two if you like the first one. They are, "For A Few Dollars More" (1965) and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966).
Other excellent movies for your list:
"The Fugitive" (1993) with an actor you're very familiar with.
"Field of Dreams" (1989) a fantasy centered around baseball but you don't have to know anything about baseball to get the movie. Not by a long shot!
"Apollo 13" (1995), a good historical-drama about a certain moon mission starring Tom Hanks.
Enjoyed your video, especially when you saw Andy's tunnel! 😁 Which is why I suggested not to research the movie or it could have revealed that surprise. It's best not to read too deeply about movies because that info sometimes spoil surprises like John Coffey's special abilities in Green Mile which always catches newcomers off guard.
One more fun movie suggestion, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) starring that same actor you're familiar with. ✌😎
I just found your channel and I want to say you did a great reaction to one of my top 10 movies. Just a bit of info on the movie. 1. He was called red because his last name was Redding.
2. The photo you see of Red when he was young is actually Morgan’s real life son.
3. His son also appeared in short clip, he was the one pretending to be fishing when the new guys came.. he had a hat on.
In the short story written by Stephen King that the movie is based on, the character of Red is actually of Irish descent, and that line comes directly from the book: why do they call you Red? Maybe because I'm Irish. Even though Morgan Freeman doesn't match the physical description of the character in the book, I love that they left that line in, it feels like a wink and a nudge for those who read the book before seeing the movie. No one could've portrayed that character better than Morgan Freeman regardless of that, I just think it's so funny every time I see the movie or a reaction when that line comes up.
You two are very fun to watch.
$35,000 in 1947 would be like $465,000 today. In the story that the movie is based on it says that Andy was in the war and it seems like Andy is distant because of what happened during the war. Brooks went into Shawshank Prison in 1905, when he got out, it was the 1950s. The world was as different to him as 2022 would be to someone from the 1970s. He was an old man alone in a world that was alien to him.

The story of Brooks is so very sad. In prison for 50 years, he emerged into a world he didn't recognize at all. You realize that when they brought him to prison, it was in a horse-drawn wagon of some kind, and he was a relatively young man.
Escaping from the prison was great, but cleaning out all the warden's bank accounts when he did it was the cherry on top.
One thing a lot of people miss...when the warden finds the Bible Andy left behind, and opens it and finds the space hollowed out for the rock hammer, it's open to the book of Exodus. Nice touch.

The actor in the film, known as red, was originally a redheaded, Irish man in the book.
It doesn’t really matter, but this is a short story and a book by Stephen king, that I am sure you both I have heard of.
This was in a book of short stories of three different stories. It took a genius to turn 100+ pages into a two hour historical American piece of cinema.

Absolutely love this movie. When the warden says, the key to salvation lies within, he had no idea that Andy's salvation was inside that very Bible the warden handed back to him. The rock hammer. Great reaction from you two!!
$35,000 in 1949 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $436k today, it's nuts that he would be unhappy even with taxes. And a new car in 1949 avg cost was $1,650
He kept that tunnel a secret from everyone for 19 years ! Crazy!
Not to sound low, but many people miss the well hidden metaphor of him coming out of the pipe is his rebirth, just as we all did once before.
I knew you two would love this movie. It’s almost as if it was made for you. A couple of “Easter eggs” for you: the hammer void in the Bible starts at the Old Testament book, Exodus, which is, of course, mostly about the subjugated Jewish people (prisoners) being delivered from Egyptian bondage (the prison) by the prophet Moses (Andy). A little subtext there. Then the hole…. Follow the timeline back from when Andy did 60 days in solitary. Then you realize the hole was COMPLETE and Andy was staying there ON PURPOSE to teach Tommy. And probably for Red, ostensibly. He could have left any time he wanted but he stayed to redeem the people he was given. Once Tommy was shot, Andy pretty much realized his work was completed and he had one redemption left: THAT is why he told Red to look under the rock. Every person needs a purpose. Pretty good writing, huh?
What an uplifting reaction video to such a heart-warming film. Thank you for taking the time to do "Shawshank Redemption." I believe I saw, before coming here, you've also done Frank Darabont's "The Green Mile," which will make me cry even more than "SR." Keep up the good work!

I love y'all's content, you guys always have really genuine emotional reactions and insightful commentary. My personal view about Andy's unique behavior is that he's Autistic. A lot of his traits fit the diagnostic criteria well, in particular his way of making eye contact, his physical/facial cues, having special interests like geology, speech mannerisms, his meticulousness, and difficulties in expressing his feelings. We often don't make regular eye contact or show our emotions on our faces. We tend to have intense fascinations with specific topics, and will often speak in more monotone voices with irregular rhythm. We're usually very particular and precise with the ways we do things, and often struggle verbally communicating our feelings to other people. I really enjoyed the video! Y'all should try and watch The Iron Giant, that's a really tender story.

It's interesting to note that they needed a picture of Morgan Freeman as a young man for the photo in the file. Morgan's son came in and dressed in costume and stood for them. They used this photo of Morgan's son for the picture in the file.
The guy bribing the warden was a contractor. The prisoners were outcompeting his company because they could have them do the work for practically nothing--essentially slave labor. There was no way anyone could compete against that. The contractor bribed the warden in exchange for him moving the prisoners on a different project.
The powder that was thrown on each inmate when they first got there is for lice. Rather than examining each person for lice, they all got delousing powder thrown on them.
This movie is based on a Stephen King book and was filmed in 1993. The movie was filmed in Mansfield prison jin my state ust a few hours from where I live. The prison was being shut down at the time and good behavior prisoners were allowed to stay behind to be extras. One of my uncles was actually an extra in the movie. $35,000 in 1949 today equals $435,545.59 at 1,144.4% inflation.

You can be bored channel surfing channels and see Shawshank and boom, tv is stuck on Shawshank. I've seen people about to leave, putting on their jackets, take them off and watch Shawshank. You will see, it draws you in more than any other film.
This is one of my all time favourites and I enjoyed watching it again with you. You may not be aware of it but when the tree near which Red got the letter from Andy was blown over by a strong wing in July 2016, it made international news (both TV and newspapers). Irish people tend to have RED hair more than any other population... that's the joke.. he's "Black irish" - Irish people with darker features. It's an absurdity.

Steven King is an amazing storyteller and this book translated so beautifully into a movie. It's not often that a movie lives up to the book the way this one does.

This is often listed as a favorite for many many people. It's probably on my top five. Note, my favorite is Casablanca, but that is neither here nor there.
One of the last few movies it seems to have come out. Before the onslaught and tidal wave. Of all these comic book superhero and action movies. That we've all been drowning under the last 20-25 years I guess. Not relying on CGI nonsense. But a great script, marvelous acting and a wonderful set. The ingredients that most movies used to be made with and relied on !
Those were not police, only prison guards. They have authority only within the prison.
Andy knew when he started the books that he would never fetch parole. It was life or break out.

I am not sure how aware you are of just how bad prison in America. I know many think that if a person commits a crime, they should be punished, I agree with that too, but I also think about their future victims and how their lives will be destroyed by murder or another serious crime. So prison should punish, but it should also reform in my opinion.
Living for decades in a stone room only leaving 3 times a day to be worked very hard and I would feel that is punishment enough for anyone, the prisons make it very much worse.
1. Rape. Prisoners are raped in prison all the time. Why in a place where the guilty are being punished, should we allow them to rape each other. Rape is a crime no matter where it occurs.
2. For profit prisons. I hope you agree that when a prisoner serves the time the judge decided to give them they should be let free. But increasingly, privately owned prisons are influencing judges and parole boards to sentence prisoners for a longer period with out parole, and to deny parole when it's an option. This is all so the prison can keep making money.
3. Solitary confinement. While I agree that prisoners who don't follow the rules should be punished, our modern understanding of exactly what 15+ days of solitary can do to a person's mind should remove this as an option of punishment.
Even 15 days of consecutive solitary can cause all kinds of permanent damage.
People who spend time in solitary are more than 50% more likely to kill themselves and more than twice as likely to kill someone else. The list of other problems is as long as a phone book. But I'll put it simply by calling it what it is and (what the United Nations calls it): Torture.
4. Repeat offenders. The only thing worse than going to prison to be raped, kept past your parole date (without a hearing) and being tortured is coming back to do it again after ruining other innocent lives because of a felony you committed.
They money being spent on giving prisoners options other than more crime is either insanely low, or being spent in incredibly stupid ways, or both. Think how much suffering a well executed prisoner reform system would save, and not just the prisoner's suffering, but the lives of those who suffer at their crimes.
In medicine and in other things, the most effective way to spend your money on is prevention.

Quit reading reviews on movies, it spoils plot lines Etc. You should have enough faith that if it's rated 9 out of 10 you can watch it and everybody wants you to watch it.
In the beginning you make an interesting point about if someone takes a life then it should cost their own. I agree that it would be a just punishment, but as far as we don't have a justice system that is incapable of making mistakes, we cannot mete out punishments that we can never take back or repay if later it's found the ruling was wrong.
Love your reaction, it really is a beautiful story of hope, love and friendship, the redemption part of it, getting a second chance.

Andy hid the rock hammer in the Bible, opened to the Book of Exodus. That is, the tale of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt.
One of the things I felt was a plot hole was how would the warden handle finances while Andy was in the hole for two months? When Andy tells him "to get someone else to run your scams," the Warden tells him that nothing stops, but that's exactly what happened when he kept Andy in the hole for two months. I can't imagine the warden would or even could suddenly stop everything. Apart from that, this was one of the best films ever made.
