    If you think his books are good to read, you should listen to the audiobooks when he narrates them. It's truly a gift. XD

      +Emily Fisher it's rare to find a writer who does his own writing just vocally but he does. Both are excellent. Actors, also, tend to ruin books out loud. Not him.

      After hearing him speak a few times I believe it. I've read a few of his books, I really should listen to how he spins them in his voice. I'm sure it will add another dimension to them. If I laugh until tears at his print I can only imagine some of my favorites in his voice.

    I was fortunate enough to see him live at the Sydney Opera House, where he sold out the entire Symphony Hall. It was amazing. The laughter was uproarious and joyful. After his reading, David (no, I'm not THAT familiar with him) sat near the exit and signed and chatted with more or less the entire audience, something that took at least two hours! He was really charming and pleasant in person, despite having signed at least 200 books before I got to him, and he graciously signed my two books, and even drew a turtle in one of them. He's just one of those treasures that pop up now and then.

      Years ago, my brother brought home from university a cassette with Sedaris reading "Santaland" and "Based Upon a True Story" ( or Based On...; the story of a TV exec trying to buy the rights to the story of a poor Southern woman who performed a kidney transplant on herself for her son ). I forgot his name, until I read a newspaper column mentioning him. I thought, "that's got to be the same guy", went to the bookstore, and came away with "Barrel Fever." I've since bought everything he's written, and attended one of his readings last summer; thank heavens it wasn't a 2020 ticket.

    Before I knew what David Looked like I always had a Picture of Him as a Bit like Beverly Leslie From Will And Grace..Short flamboyantly camp... mature gentleman

    • @simonbrooke3534
      @simonbrooke3534 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** You know, I've never watched Will & Grace, but I googled who Beverly Leslie was, and it turns out it's the same actor that plays Bernard Ferrion in Boston Legal, whom I also pictured him as. I think it's the voice, it's very similar.

    • @skawashers
      @skawashers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon Brooke Boston Legal as a Reference I wouldn't have Known. But we are Both on the same page .
      I had No clue that David would Look as he does I so Expected a Bow-tie a Tweed jacket. As Two Unconnected people as us having the same Idea. I am sure we are Not the only ones who thought of a Similar Reference.. Both are great as a actor and a Writer. Both also do Monologues. Easy Mistake sorry David and Leslie Jordan If Its a to easy stereotype. And so Happy that he has Now set up home in England. I like that other Prolific artists move to England.

    Contined from comment below/ that I should borrow it and read it. The next day I took the train from san francisco to my mom's house if I have the book in my bag. The first few paragraphs had me laughing so much I kept reading. I was amazed that I read the entire book.So the whole time the problem was never me just that there was nothing interesting until I discovered Davis Sedaris. Thank You David

    Ive never read a book in my entire life until my 40s.I was always too distracted and couldn't concentrate. Then 1 night while on a bad date I was at this person's house wondering to myself how am I going to get out of here? Distracted as usual I saw a book on a coffee table titled"Holidays on Ice" I pretended to be interested in the booking thinking it would by me time to think of an excuse so I would not end up in bed with this guy. He told me what a great book that is and that I should borrow

    Wonderful stuff. I came to David Sedaris late in my life having been brought up on half a century's worth of great British humerus writing. I love his stories and hearing him read them so skilfully is a delight. Congratulations to you David for passing the "Life in the UK" test.

    but....I'm Australian, lived all over the world, now living in America for 20 yrs, and find the opposite about the money bit...everywhere else, people discuss what they earn and money, but Americans are a closed book about money.
    ...and I would've been the first to ask "how do you live in America and not get shot?"

    michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10366_41825_51108-197553--,00.html Maybe David's knowledge of the law is out-of-date or he thinks people who are legally blind are completely sightless. As smart as David is i would expect him to know better and not pass judgement upon people without knowing the circumstances. Maybe it is just a punchline and I am being too serious, but people take it on faith on don't bother doing a 20 second web search to find out Mr. Sedaris is lacking in candor.

    Try to make someone gay and see how far you get. For that matter, try to make someone straight and see how that works for you.
    Are you saying that feces have sexuality or was that a bigoted remark?
    Personally, adults sex lives are none of my business.
    It's not yours either ....unless you're engaged in the activity.
