Been a handyman 8 years now, done alot of old farmhouses, sanding all kinds of woodwork without even thinking about this. Then last week I decided it would be a good idea to get swabs and start testing and I'm finding it everywhere!! I've started to be vigilant from now on and I think I've been lucky not to get ill.
I've been a decorator for 44 years and I never knew that these kits were available at decorators merchants. Thanks for making me aware, I'll buy some as I do a lot of work in old buildings.
Not enough of this type of advice out there sadly Same goes with things like asbestos. When times are tough more and more people go to TH-cam etc to find out how to do a job themselves to save a few quid. Nothing is more important than your own health. Nice one Roger
We are so glad Peel Away 1 is your choice for the removal of lead based paints. We also recommend using the Dumond Laminated Test Kit to see which paint removal product will work best for your project! Dumond Laminated is an important step in the removal process so thank you for showing the importance of it (keeping the layers in a wet state to keep the product working and it makes the clean up process a breeze)!
PCR is great for detecting genetic material. You can use AA for lead but these days better to use ICP-OES. If you're looking for stable lead isotope differentiation then use laser ablation ICP-MS QQQ. If you're dissing the PCR test for COVID then you've maybe still got lead pipes.
You can buy test kits where you send a sample off to be tested. Asbestos is in more than you think, I found that out only after taking up a floor of black vinyl looking tiles!
Lead white was used by artists such as Rembrandt until it was banned for artists by the early 90s in the UK and only allowed for conservation purposes . Nowadays for artists it is replaced by Flake white though titanium white is more popular.
Another product that has gone down the road of handle with care and certain companies make a small fortune out of removing it safely. Born and grew up in a 1700's house in the UK. Full of lead paint and even lead pipes. I'm now in my 60's. My Dad lived in that house for 50 years and lived to 83 with few illnesses. I was a Builder and worked with lead a lot of my life. Who knows. Some organization pops up and says dangerous get rid of that and everyone jumps. Asbestos the same. Yes it can be a killer but it also doesn't always seem to be that way. I knew plumbers and ship workers that were covered in the stuff every day in the loose powder form. Yet they lived into their late eighties and nineties. I have been on several Asbestos courses. One fibre is a killer we get told. I used to cut sheets of Asbestos roofing with a 14 inch cut off saw. No mask, go home like a snow man. Worked with it for the last 50 years. So far still here. With all these things they tell you the worst case scenario, it may or may not happen. I don't believe in living life to an if. You can wrap yourself in cotton wool and get hit by a bus, or live life on the edge and live to 100. Not worth worrying about.
I always been aware of led, asbestos, and all the harmful stuff, never smoked, never intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, and similar. An I've got cancer. Ben fighting coming back lymphoma for 4 years. Bit like my anutie Ivy who smoked 60 a day for over 70 years and lived until she was 99. Or that air hostess who survived a fall from an airplane at 33000 feet. Your conclusion is total BS, sadly.
I work in a factory for 40 years the last 15 we had extractors fans to help remove the fumes from soldering as my job was a prototype wireman so I used a soldering iron every day. About 8 to 10 years ago we had a lead test and my results were normal. If your house was built before 1978 then it probable will have lead paint. If the house is that old it's probably got a lead water pipe.
😊@@sadiporter2966 the lead pipes are usually from the mains no one used copper underground as it'd corrode. Luckily most water is so hard the pipes will have a protective layer of limescale decades ago. Just run it for a couple of minutes to clear the standing water and you'd be fine. Most houses in my road still have lead mains pipes.
Lead pipes are still very very common most houses never upgraded them even when the new mains were converted over to plastic early 2000’s around here , once scaled up they are fine if not disturbed
Walking down the street can be dangerous. Driving a car is a risk. The more miles you drive the greater the risk. Even more so on a motorcycle. Life is a risk. Do all the youngsters today want to live to a hundred. Getting old sucks and the planet is overcrowded. Too many other things to worry about like paying the bills on a pension. The lead or Asbestos I worked with all my working life could have saved me the joys of old age and no money. Live long and Prosper. Didn't happen Spock.
As long as you was your hand after eating or drinking or putting your hands in your mouth you will be fine. Also you shouldn’t over head lead when welding as it can give of toxic fumes. But it is safe to handle.
What about all those lead water pipes people used to get their drinking water from? Remember lead in petrol? I don’t remember people dropping like flies from it tho.
you don't drop dead instantly, it takes time. You didn't see people drop dead after having 1 cigarette so i guess those must be safe according to your logic.
Working in the countryside restoring old properties, all my working life, I wouldn’t be surprised if the vast majority of properties I have had the pleasure to work on are still lead. It is still out there everywhere, in the countryside buh

Top advice thanks. I didn't know these existed. I will definately be using these on my jobs. 👍

Much more reliable than the pcr.

Need one for asbestos.
Is there a test for asbestos in Artex? I would find that much more useful.

I heat stripped a front door, outside without a mask. It was old. I can hear my IQ dropping by the minute.
Probably being a front door outside helped. Better than in a windowless box room
Thank you very much for this!
Excellent suggestions. Thank you! DA
What's the other swab at 01:27?
I didn't know this product existed. I'm grateful to have seen this. Will it work on tap water from lead plumbing I wonder? Anyone tried it?👋

Many years ago when my wife didn't get pregnant she said that I had no lead in my pencil. How strange.
I hope this is a joke. As pencils have graphite in not lead the metals. It’s a falsehood to say a pencil has lead in it.
@@mrfr87 Black lead is the old name for graphite, so it is still correct.

Great video, still a lot of lead paint and pint with Chrome 6 in it going about. Very harmful

You only get one chance at life so I’d say good. If you’re happy and enjoying life… and feeling well then good for you.
Water soluble paint is easily absorbed through your skin.

A temp controlled soldering iron won’t vaporise lead, the smoke is flux fumes, still not great to breathe, but not as bad as lead.
lead water pipes were banned in 1970 but most stopped using them many years prior as copper pipes were cheaper.

Not the most reliable swabs
they aren't? Do you have more info?
Rub it on a rusty bit of metal and u get the same reaction unfortunately
Or on gypsum plaster as it reacts with the sulphates present. Looks like there could be plaster dust in that test sample there.

Weird timing as I looked into this two days ago. Now.
As yourself.
Why did 3m stop making these back in 2022?
I'll let you go research it yourself.
Btw if you want to know if it's lead, a lab test should be the only thing to trust.
If your going to throw out a conspiracy theory, I'll do some research for you.
Clearly 3M stopped because aliens.
@TheWebstaff seeing as labs use this sort of stuff to test, as long as your not buying dodgy stuff off certain internet marketplaces, your fine
