The Last Waltz was fined in 1978, chronicling the last performance of the band before they split up.

started out as The Hawks backing Ronnie Hawkins then Dylan and morphed into The Band. There has never been another group anything like them! Long live Garth Hudson

Have you ever witnessed 2 groups performing music on a stage where it is so damned easy , natural and so incredibly enjoyable to watch ? The Band and The Staple Singers doing their thing on stage some 46 years ago ,set the bar so high that other groups need a helicopter ride to try and reach and emulate their achievements . I cant think of a comparison to what happened all those years ago as the complete summit of the highest mountain was reached and conquered . Glowing and brilliant ....

This is such a beloved song especially this version. Do yourself a favor and watch the documentary The Last Waltz it’s their final concert amazing. Can you imagine that they and Dylan were booed on the stage for plugging in. Booing The Band/ Dylan WTF

  • @jessem470

I love opening of this song
Nazareth is reference to town in Pennsylvania where Martin Guitars are made
Band split at height of their careers in 75 or 76
Their last concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese
    Released as Last Waltz
Everyone was invited and everyone showed up
Dylan , Neil Young , Joni Mitchel , Van Morrison , Eric Clapton , Muddy Waters , etc etc
    A Must Watch
    Ons last fact
Dylan asked Mavis Staple to mary him , it just didn’t work ouut

After The Last Waltz, Robbie didn't play with them anymore. The other 4 members did do some concerts, and from I have seen on Utube they are pretty good, especially when Rick Danko is singing, but not quit the same as when Robbie was part of the group, he after all wrote most of the songs, and played killer guitar. Not to downplay the other members, they were all great.

Actually this version is a studio version not live. It was recorded during the production of the Album The Last Waltz from the movie of the same name. Some of the members of The Band were pissed off at Robbie for including some acts (Like Niel Diamond which Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time) and leaving out others that really had an influence on them like the Staples Singers. They produced a studio version with The Staples Singers that looked like a live performance so it would fit in with the live theam of the Album/Concert. Personally, this is undoubtedly the best version of The Weight I've heard.
This information was from Levon Helms book, This Wheels On Fire.

Right at the end is unfortunate on this as Mavis Staples whispers "Beautiful" and it's inaudible because of what sounds like static (you can hear it in the actual film The Last Waltz). She's expressing her own reaction to the perfect take of this iconic and timeless song.

  • @troubleondemand7703

Another Dylan connection here is the female singer Mavis Staples. She has was in a relationship with Bob Dylan for 7 years and he actually proposed to her and she turned him down because she had just gotten her first big record contract and didn't want to be tied down. She later said it was one of the regrets of her life and that he was “the love that I lost.”

If you like this bluesy kind of music, find Elvin Bishop's song "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Mickey Thomas sings it and Elvin plays a fabulous guitar solo. Mickey has one of the best voices ever in Rock and Roll.

They are all gone now. Robbie Robertson (the guy playing the double necked guitar) died just last week, he has been the lone survivor for a coulpe of years. Find the movie made about them and Bob Dylan called "The Last Waltz." ITs a Rocumentary of a few Band, and artists, with a big part devoted to "The Band."
    Thanks

The whole doc is great but it was difficult time for the group. Robertson wanted out of the group; too much drug addition and mental illness for him; he set up the movie idea with Scorsese but the rest of the Band didn't want it to be "The Last Waltz" , so there was a lot of animosity toward Robertson. I glanced at the other comments . To my knowledge, Garth Hudson is still alive and the last with us from the Band.

They started young. Robbie wrote his first songs when he was 15./16 for Ronnie Hawkins. Robbie, Richard and Rick was all born in 1943, Levon and Garth ar are a little older. The went out on their own in 1968 after being a back for Dylan for a few years. As for their clothing. before The Last Waltz Robbie suggested they hit a vintage clothing shop. Garth and Levon declined. Levon just wanted to wear something cool, since it would be hot under the lights. Richard chose a checkered suit, Rick a vest, which he is wearing here, and Robbie a pin stripe kind of formal jacket and the read silk scarf, he looks very dapper, as does Rick.
