Actually The Band came together in the late 1950s, called The Hawks as Ronnie Hawkins' backing band. They split from Hawkins in 1963 and played as Levon Helm & The Hawks. After they hooked up with Dylan in 1965 , they became his band and then "The Band" in 1967.

The Band was one of the greatest bands of the 70's. When they decided to break up, they put on a concert and invited a large number of artists to join them. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and others showed up and the concert was filmed by super director Martin Scorsese. The movie of the concert was The Last Waltz, and it is one of the finest concert films ever made. Glad you liked this song!

Base guitar was Rick Danko, one of the great voices in rock. The Band had three lead singers, all considered among the very best. Listen to Danko sing Makes no Difference from this same concert/movie. Possibly the most emotional love song ever.

The bass player, Rick Danko, died on this day in 1999. The Band were originally Bob Dylan’s back up band. This is from the Martin Scorsese film “The Last Waltz”. This entire concert is a masterpiece, and that is The Staple Singers, check out their music too. ✌️♥️🎶

I never got to hear/see [Heresy? No!] the Band or The Staples live, but I had the great good fortune to attend the ZooFest (Lincoln, Neb.) in 2019, pre-CoViD. Mavis Staples was the headliner for this blues/soul/Americana music festival. It was 10 days past her 80th birthday, but you would never guess that from her performance. The woman is a force of nature.
This is one of the most beautiful and historical collaborations in music history!! Sister Mavis Staples is an icon!! ❤❤
Some songs by The Band to check out: Up On Cripple Creek, Chest Fever, King Harvest (Has Surely Come), Jemima Surrender, To Kingdom Come, I Shall Be Released, The Shape I'm In and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. There are multiple singers in the group and they play multiple instruments. They came out at the time in rock when heavy metal and psychedelic music were popular and their Americana and roots rock sound were quite different and fresh. One of the absolute best rock bands ever.

Violin and fiddle are the exact same instrument. Depending what type of music is being played; fiddle = country/ zydeco music, violin = classical/ orchestral music. The Last Waltz was a concert film documentary event that featured close to a dozen musicians representing a diverse genre of music: In addition to The Band itself there was in attendance; Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, the Staple Singers. The Staples were a family based gospel group formed in the 60s featuring 4 sisters and the father (Pops Staples). Highly recommend checking out some of their hits "Respect Yourself", "I'll Take You There", "(Let's) Do It Again", "Take Me to the River", and a Talking Heads cover "Slippery People". They are phenomenal!

The Staple Singers were father and his 3 daughters (thats why you think they look alike). Robbie Robertson (playing double neck guitar) passed away this past August). Garth Hudson keyboardist is the only surviving original member. RIP to the other members.

The drummer is Levin Helm, one of my favorite multi instrumentalists and vocalists of all time. He is American, the rest of The Band is Canadian.
Loved Levon. He was from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. Levon was also a pretty good actor as Mr. Rate in 'Shooter'.
An American rock critic once said that playing the drums and singing live simultaneously is like flying 2 jets at the same time ! The intricacies are enormous ! Mr Levon Helm did both with the greatest of ease and the end product is sublimely brilliant . The guy made it look so ,so easy ,when it obviously was not .
The Last Waltz is a 1978 film/documentary directed by Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Departed), centering around the final live performance by The Band (four white Canadians and the drummer from Arkansas, who perfected "Americana." ) They added a few extra music videos of styles the concert didn't cover. The black artisyd here are The Staples Singers, Pops Staples and his daughters, featuring the legend Mavis who lead off their vocals.
The band itself has three lead singers and two complete different lineups with just the same fabe guys. The guitarist wrote most of the songs. The bassist plays fiddle..the drummer plays madolin, the piano player also songs and switches to drums. The organist can play anythjng, but switches to Sax.
One of the best music doc films ever made. Highly worth watching.

Check out more music from the last waltz concert (1976), arguably the best concert of all time, this concert was filmed. As a documentary, I watch it at least once a year, I also have the, so many great musicians were at that concert. The band was Bob Dylan‘s backing band for a while when he went electric.
The Staple Singers was/is a family from Chicago. Very well known not only in Chicago but nationwide. I do believe they sang at the White House.

The Fiddle is a Violin. It just gets called a fiddle, for some reason, when it's used in country and bluegrass music.

The lady with the voice that reaches into your soul is Mavis, who’s had a solo career as well. They make up the Staples Singers. Pops was a good friend of Dr Martin Luther King, and the group was influential to the civil rights movement. The group is worthy of a reaction in their own right. I enjoyed this one!
The Band was unique you are right it is a little blues, rock and country. When they became well known in the late sixties, no one knew what to make of them they were so different from other sixties group. The Band had 2 great singers, Levon Helm the drummer, Rick Danko (crazy Chester) and Richard Manuel.
Get yourself the DVD of this concert. It gives you more than a ton of great music.
I got to see The Band in my hometown of Ft. Smith, Arkansas in the late 80s. I had an old friend that was in the music scene and helped bring many great bands to town, including the Band and the Staple Singers, separately. His name was Dick Renko. It was great when he got to meet the bass player for the Band. "Dick Renko meet Rick Danko". PS. the shows were incredible and together they are GOLD.
Let's clarify a few things here. The Last Waltz was a concert movie that the group "The Band" put out when they broke up the first time. The Staple Singers was a Dad (Pop Stables) and his 3 daughters and they started out doing Gospel music but moved in and out of Pop music over the years. They had several classic hits in the 1970's. This performance is one of the highlights of the movie.

Levon Helm, on drums, was one of the three principle singers for The Band. It always makes me laugh when reactors are so surprised by seeing a drummer on lead vocals. Have they never heard of Don Henley (Eagles and solo career), Phil Collins (Genesis and solo career), and Karen Carpenter, not to mention many other singing drummers like Roger Taylor (Queen), Ace Freely (KISS), Ringo Starr, etc.?
What a great song by The Band,and having the Staple Singers joining them made it extra special.Levon Helm the drummer was great and was also in the movie Shooter,as the old guy/gun expert for those that might have watched that movie.The Staples also covered this song and did a great job on it.

Fiddling is actually a style of playing on a violin, and not an instrument itself. It's often done with bowing hard across 2-3 strings simulteneously. That's why you often see fiddler's bows shredding during their performance. My wife's a violinist so I had to ask her because my dumbass didn't know either, but there ya go...
all the guys in the Band could sing. and the Staples are legendary. The Last Waltz was i think their farewell concert? they made a movie of this concert.
Except for Garth Hudson, the keyboard and sax player. He never sang, except for one semi-spoken verse in Dark Star on his solo album.
I'd say the Staples bring more of a gospel flavor, than blues. But yeah, a great mesh of sounds.

Pops Staples grew up on the Dockery Plantation listening to blues royalty: Son House, Charley Patton, Henry Sims , The Chatman Family, Henry Townend, and God alone know who else that came through.

The inclusion of that tid bit of very old style of harmony after The Weight, makes perfect sense to me. I've heard it in the older Southern style gospel when I was little. And a reactor from New Zealand said that was the way his older uncles played when he was a kid. The original English settlers brought the sound with them as they began to populate the new lands.
I recommend you listen to both songs again but in reverse order. Then you'll hear that old style reflected in The Weight.🧓😎
"The band" was bob dylan's touring band. They went on their own...and your hearing it! The staples are a family gospel group. "The last waltz" is a film of "the bands" last live concert...with guests.

Nope. The Band was a band long before Dylan. They were brought together by Ronnie Hawkins and were his backing band known as The Hawks for years. They left Ronnie and struck out on their own as Levon Helm and The Hawks. Dylan wanted the group to tour as his backing band for one tour from Sept.1965 to May 1966. Helm left the group and the tour after the first month.
It's hard to hear unless you go to the vid itself but I love at the very end when Mavis whispers in the mike "beautiful". Yes, it was
Levon Helm the drummer said he liked playing drums and singing, said it was easier to play fills and emphasize your vocals.

One of my favorites, by one of my favorite bands, The Band and sung by one of my all time favorite singer Rick Danko.
Rick Danko (the one in the hat with the fiddle) is hammered there, but he is hilarious and as always brings his unique raspy voice to this song.
Nope. He was hammered/coked during the live concert. Theis was filmed in a studio a few days after the event. Danko knew he had performed horribly during the concert and much of his bass playing would have to be overdubbed. He vowed to be straight for this recording.

A fiddle is a violin with a southern accent.
Robbie wrote some great songs and they all came together and created a distinctive sound that could never be mistaken for anyone but the Band. Robertson, Danko, Hudson and Manuel were Canadian and Helm American. Iconic.

Danko was hopelessly high during the live concert and most of his bass playing had to be overdubbed later. This was filmed in a studio a few days after the live concert and because he had screwed up so badly during the live show he vowed to do this recording straight.
I am of the opinion that this song should only be performed if Mavis Staples is present.
A fiddle isnt really an instrument it's more like a style of playing the violin, it's weird ik but stick with me, people who play fiddle may whittle their bridge to be less arched and more flat and sometimes use steel strings instead of synthetic. It's kind of like how there are styles to plying banjo. Scruggs style is different from claw hammer not just in technique but in the way it is set up, like if you are using the resonator or not and even the string material.

The pianist ( Richard Emmanuel)is a a brilliant vocalist, in his own right, but gracefully did not sing his verse and gave it to Pops Staples.
