This song is a fantastic song and probably my favorite from the Band. It was played a lot during my college days in the late 60s early 70s. This is one of those songs that you know right away from the first time hearing that it’s special and unique and the refrain is awesome and so inspiring. RIP Robbie Robertson, a true rock icon if there ever was one!

Before they were The Band they were a legendary bar band backing up Ronnie Hawkins, an early Rockabilly singer, for many years learning their trade. They briefly went on their own as Levon and The Hawks until they were recommended by John Hammond Jr. to Bob Dylan who was quietly looking a band to support his entry into Rock N Roll. The rest is history. They were virtually booed off the stage everywhere they played with Dylan although the music they produced is now considered some of the best live rock performances ever. (Check out anything from 1966 with Dylan and The Band). After Dylan's motorcycle accident near Woodstock NY. Dylan took what turned out to be an eight year break from touring. He moved the group up near him, kept them on salary and they just worked on music in The Basement of their house that they named Big Pink. It was there that the styles and influences of music they taught each other culminated in the legendary Basement Tapes that were never meant to see the light of day. It leaked and the first bootleg album and cottage industry surrounding Dylan was born. Locals in Woodstock just referred to the them as Dylan and the band, Thats how their name came about and the whole Americana category of music was born.

Be sure to watch all the different countries these artists are from.

Lots of times you hear friends talking or articles in media ask, "name song remakes better than the original " and you always get a different performer or group doing the original song differently. Well, I nominate this version as the winner of the best remake of an already great song by the original group. I loved the original, but this version is basically musical heaven. The two groups harmonies and different vocal styles just mesh together beautifully, heavenly really. These two groups were destined to perform this song together and music is better for it. Thanks for your comments, and your smile throughout the performance was clear indication of how you felt about it. Great job and love your takes. Thanks for doing this one..

Guitarist and Songwriter Robbie Robertson(RIP), and Keyboardists Richard Manuel(RIP) and Garth Hudson provide very capable back up.. Pretty damn good, I'd say.
