    WS you mentioned the timber laying down on the blade, with heavy beams its a good idea to use a couple wedges to help hold it up. one one the end and about middle ways will do the trick, i have a lucas and it takes time to learn a few tricks that will help you.

    I really like the saw mill videos. Takes me back to the day when I was working in a saw mill. I also envy you working in out-doors like you do. The clean air, the nice "cool" temps, the low humidity. I was raised in climate like that in Northern California, and now I really miss it living here on the Gulf Coast with all the moisture, hot temps ant all. Enjoy it while you can. I even miss the snow believe it or not!

    Look at that, keeping us all in suspense...Hopefully the next one will be the finished cuts, interesting process I didn't know anything about the Lucas or milling in general so this was great. This video seemed to have a more slowed down, "this is why we do this and that." I found that helpful.

    In No. Cal. my mom had a black oak drop that was 56" diameter at the trunk. In the end, after sitting for years waiting for it to be cut into lumber, a local firewood cutter came to whittle it up for firewood. I bought it back for the cost of approximate firewood volume. That was the biggest tree I was involved with cutting with a lucas mill. The mill even survived hitting a railroad spike embedded in the trunk. It turned out a lot of 4/4 and even some 4X4 stock.

    You didn't mention it when you were deciding how you were going to cut your beams. But are you worried about grain orientation? Or is it not as big of a deal on these bigger beams?

    • @stevenmiller7731
      @stevenmiller7731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very important! Grain and knots determine the grade of the board or a timber. The grade and the species of tree will define and limit the load capacities, and must be integrated with the dimensions of the beam. Then it's possible to determine if it's strong enough to be used in its particular location in a Timber Frame and able to withstand all forces it will be subject to. Wane effects the grade. More wane will lower the grade (and its strength). Same with knots, and with grain direction/angle off the long axis of the beam.

    Yes, the amount of wane left on a sawn timber is very important! Good morning , it's usually the case these days that the human loses the job to the machine , but in recent videos , the machine ( drone ) is losing time to the human ( Brian ) .
    But I have to say , and Brian , I'm very sorry to have to say , the drone is much more stable . ( and Brian your camera is still very good )
    But I'll also say that , although , sometimes it's as if the drone was a living thing , It can't compete with Brian as to how to select what/where to shoot .
    So in the end , the human still wins out .
    Again , another good video
    Keep em coming
