    An update: Spent the weekend doing this job. Your video was INVALUABLE! I literally just played it step by step to keep track of my progress. It has all of the important details without any of the fluff, which makes it perfect for instructional use. this video should be THE top video for the 3vze engine... like this seriously needs to circulate on YotaTech, it made it way clearer than months of research did for me.
    The 1994 3VZE (and 95) use a hydraulic tensioner which was the only difference between this video and my truck. It is installed directly on the fan bracket and I recommend installing the fan bracket and tensioner and releasing the grenade pin BEFORE installing any of the crankshaft parts (cover, sprocket) so that you can be SURE that your timing is correct.
    One other tip: If you remove the camshaft sprockets (which you do to replace the camshaft seals) you can MUCH easier get at those 13mm bolts for the No 2 tensioner, behind the dust cover. I could not for the life of me get those two rear bolts installed again, but if you remove the entire dust cover behind the camshafts, it is like 1 extra step for an hour of saved frustration. And if you are already this far on your 200,xxx miles truck, replacing the seals is a good idea anyway.
    I had a hell of an easy time getting off the camshafts and crankshaft bolts, cannot say enough good things about the milwaukee 12V fuel.. took me 3 seconds to get all those bolts off and I didn't have to mess with the starter trick.
    My truck idled really high at startup (2000 rpm) and I was SUPER worried my timing was off, even though I felt really confident in my timing belt install. Once coolant started circulating, it dropped right back down to 1000. So- if you are like me and having high anxiety over your rpm's, let it heat up and add some coolant before tearing it down again. :)
    Thanks for guiding me through this massive project!

      This is a super helpful response Madelyn! Thank you so much for sharing the tips about the hydraulic tensioner, and getting to those #2 tensioner bolts while having the cam pulleys off. I’m so happy the video helped you. I don’t like fluffy videos either lol. Good on you for giving your truck some love at 200k! Cheers to another 200 (LOVE Toyotas)!

I’m about done with the tear down now, this is the first time I’ve ever done a job like this and I’ve had to pause a few times to wait and save up for tools or parts or to find the time to work on it. Nice job. Wish I had this 2 months ago when I was doing it! PS I had trouble getting the belt tight enough so the marks to lined up after two revolutions: so I clamped the belt to the crank pullies and turned the camshaft pully one notch behind, then put the belt on it. That way I could turn the shaft with a ratchet and run the belt into the tensioner pully using leverage. Worked perfect.

      I've rebuilt several engines including this 3.0 3VZE engine. The timing belt installation is always a little challenging. I never get it right the first 2 tries. And yes, doing it as you mention it is probably the best & fastest way to do it but most people won't admit it. That's the way I do it. But if the timing belts have the 2 marks on the timing belt to align with the camshaft timing marks, it makes things a lot easier.

    You did an amazing job. I could only reason that the few people who gave you thumbs down, are fools that need to see every detailed done like screwing every nut and bolt down, they want to see the silicone actually being spread on the thermostat housing, etc. I've rebuilt this 3.0 vze engine for my 1991 4Runner sr5 4x4. Probably one of the most complicated engines I worked on & I've worked on nothing fanzy. Even rebuilding a diesel engine on my 1980 Turbo Diesel Mercedes wasn't a pain like this engine. I replaced all the vacuum lines & hoses with at least 6 inches extra in length since the original length are so short & tight that there is no wiggle room to see if any of them have become lose, cracked, broken, or slipped off to create bad performance on the engine like sudden rpm surges from vacuum leaks or hesitations. The reason I got around to your video is because I'm actually replacing the water pump because the water pump gasket broke around 1 of the bolts in the area of the thermostat housing but between the water pump & the engine block. Had it not been for that, the water pump & thermostat probably had another 2 or 3 more years of service which would have been ideal to then replace also timing belt & other parts; now I have to do it 2,3 years earlier thanks to some cheap Autozone gasket & water pump. I could have been installing my newly rebuilt 5.0 engine on my convertible Mustang GT even though summer is almost gone here in Southern Cali. I also took videos and photos of my 3.0 3vze engine rebuilt process but it was faster to come to watch youtube videos for a refresher into what I need to take apart. Yours being the 3rd I watched & the best one I've seen all including the past ones I saw. You mentioned the parts to remove, the size bolts & nuts, how many they are, the process, & torque. Great job, keep up the good work. God bless'ya.

TDC remained unchanged after I cranked it many times but the belt L, R, Center marks slowly drifted to the left with each crank so I panicked. Job is done now and the truck seems just fine. Forums were saying ignore the belt marks...just watch the notches on cams and crank shaft. Getting the crank shaft pulley back on was though... ended up doing a work around where I cut an old alternator belt in half and double wrapped it around the crankshaft pulley and viced the other end to the frame for counter pressure so I could tighten to 181 lbs

      @GirlieGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tylerkaplan2799 yes! When you install a new belt you use those marks to line it up correctly the first time, then they rarely line back up again (I forget how many revolutions but there is a mathematical equation for determining how many revolutions until all marks realign). Just a tip, if you set the belt on everything else first, then rotate the crank pulley 1 tooth counterclockwise and set the belt on, it will make it much easier. Then rotate back counterclockwise 1 tooth and you now have no slack on the idler side of the timing belt and it's all on the tensioner side like it should be. Done. Hundreds of timing jobs like this and it works on almost every manufacturer.

    A very nice video for do-it-yourselfers who may have only a modicum of knowledge and tools. However let me make note of a few discrepancies for those who may not be familiar with some of the references you made. For example, not all manufacturers use an "L" and "R" on their timing belts. Also, as your pointed out, since the engine is a high vibration one, it is important for installers to use the correct RTV sealant. In the present case, while the "Red" one will work, the "Ultra Grey" is better. However, some gaskets come equipped with a sealant already. In addition, more emphasis needs to be stressed for cleaning the mounting surfaces since I have routinely encountered those who have to do-it-again because they failed to clean surfaces adequately. Also, if the radiator drain cock is difficult to remove, removal of the lower hose is advisable. It is also a good idea to flush out the radiator in order to try and remove the sediment which can be seen floating on top of yours near the end of the video. In addition, it may be of value to explain which tools are needed so that when you say "torque" there is no head scratching by those who are not familiar with this word in this context. And while each mechanic has their own ways of approaching a given task, I applaud you for your express attempt to be concise with clear images and not deafen viewers with background nonsense.

    • @GirlieGarage
      @GirlieGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for adding in helpful tips Herb. The gentleman that owns this truck is a chemist who makes his own coolant….it is not sediment. I would hope that if someone didn’t know what “torque” meant that they could Google it. You are totally right, working on cars has an individual flair unique to each person, this is just mine, and hopefully it helps people out there who are up for tackling it themselves.

    I have a 1995 Toyota 4Runner that hasn't run in 2 years, 2 Years ago we had some -20F degree weather that did a lot of freezing destruction here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and I had tried to start the 4runner to get to the store but it quickly started to over heat so I immediately shut it back off. After the weather warmed back up some I tried to start it and all it did was turn over but wouldn't start. Since then I have had 2 different Mechanics from different shop come to fix it. the first mechanic said I needed all new injector and that he would have to take it into his shop to remove everything to replace the injectors. I told the scamming thief to leave knowing the odds of all 6 injectors going out at the same time is almost impossible. The second did all the same checks as the first and a compression check that showed it had almost no compression in all cylinders, he stated he might be able to rebuild the engine for $2000 but more then likely I would need a whole new engine costing over $6000. So my vehicle has sat since till I found this Video and got to thinking what if the timing belt broke or jumped that might be why there is no compression. I watched this video a few time to get to know what was what and today I took my tools and removed the timing belt cover like in the video. Yep there it was in all it's glory a destroyed timing belt that had not only server wear but had also jumped teeth causing the valves to be open when they shouldn't be, so no compression. Now I will replace the timing belt and components needed to have my vehicle running again all because I came across this video. PS: For anyone thinking I need to replace or do a valve job because of the bad timing belt this engine 3VZE in 1995 4runner is a NON-interference engine so the valves and pistons will never touch no matter what if the belt even completely breaks.

    • @GirlieGarage
      @GirlieGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WOW! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It's insane that you had it taken to 2 different mechanics and neither one of them checked the timing belt (and all you had to do was pull the timing cover off).
      You are 100% right, it is a non-interference engine. Sometimes if the vehicle was running when the belt broke, there can still be damage, but these Toyota engines are usually pretty durable.
      Please let us all know if it runs once you line everything back up and throw on a new belt!
