In every corner there is a small masterpiece/diamond hidden even if you had not paid attention during the final songs. Especially behind hammett's solos. Or that harmony on fade to black again just before the final solo. How the fuck did he think it so young? Was it Burton that helped layering?

This is my personal favorite Metallica solo. I've heard it described as ADD jumping from part to part without any real transitions and isolated it certainly sounds that way, but the transitions between parts come from the drums in this solo.
The part of the solo that starts off at 5:02 is so much easier than every tab site shows. On the D string: 4 2 0 5 4 0 7 5 9 7 0 10 9 0 12 10 14 12 0 16 14 0 Then on the G string: 16 14 0 B string: 17 15 14 E string : 17!!!!!! I don't know why it's so convoluted in the tabs...
I'm sorry but I honestly don't hear it. The 2 songs are completely different. At most there are just parts that can sound kind of similar but that's still a stretch to say that this song was influenced by Mustaine. Kirk did come up with the verse riff while on the couch watching tv. And tremolo picking with fast pull offs is not by any means created by mustaine.

Anyone know what kirk plays starting at 0:18? I'm kinda new to learning by ear, and I can figure out basic power chord riffs but stuff like this with weird chord shapes trips me up and I can never seem to get it.

Well obviously not all of it, but clearly you don’t play guitar or you would understand what I mean. Watch ANY live Metallica with good pro video and watch James downpick the intros, verses, he’s just adding a flip in them to get the fast groups of opens. I’ve tried alterpicking this entire song, it’s too hard. A fast downpick is the only way to make it sound right period.

That being the intro and alternating between downstrokes and triplets in the main riff. But I would say the down picking parts are easier then the triplet and quick tremolo picking part right after the main riff.
