When I lived in Manila I learned fast that instead of arguing about prices, I went with my Filipina neighbor. She was a great haggler, and she loved doing it. She negotiated the best prices, and I always cooked her some of my cajun treats. I used to run into expats that would stomp and yell over prices but then go down the road to the mall and pay crazy prices for their favorite American comfort food. Its silly. Alot of places I go to shop in Vietnam and Cambodia have "regular shopper" prices at the open air markets. I usually just tell them that if they give me their regular customer price, that I will shop only there for what they are selling and they perk up and give me a discount, but even if they said no, I give a smile and say thank you for your time. Moving to another country should be about a better lifestyle, and you cant do that if you are always angry.

Same in Indonesia. Here they have local and foreigner price, and I'm not a good haggler, so I take my local GF shopping, and she doesn't mess about...😊

Prefer upbeat with Khmer holiday celebration such as Khmer New Year, Bun Om Touk like previous intro… I like Khmer music in the bachelorette as well.

Nice to see the market busy again..
I lived up past 30 road and was always on Krolanh road...my Khmer lady shopped there a lot..
I live on the other side of the river now...I always watch your vids and try to picture where you are..
Finally, you tell me ...plus, the wide white stairs that take you to the next level were a dead giveaway for me..
    Good advice...
I was chuckling about having a pork shop...fish shop...veggie..on and on..
I have been spreading my money around to the tuk tuk community..but, a few guys I message direct..
Yeah, I cannot imagine fighting with some poor Khmer vender over a few riel...I must admit ..I do a lot of shopping just down the road at Angkor Market....I cook food from around the world and get what I need there...for the best imported beef..I recommend Lee Foods...They have warehouses in PP, Sihanouk, Kampot..and here ...great imported Aussie or Kiwi beef and lamb...
Good luck with all your endeavers..

So you know it's a pretty good market being from around there and all. Yeah, I have a person for almost everything lol! Once I find a good one I never want to let them go. The nice lady from our corner mom and pop store doesn't speak any English but she teaches me Khmer words for things after I show her what it is.
I never heard of Lee's so thank you for that information. Could come in handy!

@@DaveDoesCambodia I started buying my December whole ribeye there in 2017 at their Sihanouk warehouse...I have used the main one in PP and Kampot opened a new outlet in 2018...You can find Lee on google map ...I have bought 5 whole ribeyes here at the SR outlet...
I love to cut them down to thick steaks and holiday roasts...usually, I go to Psa Leu to my sach chrouk lady...
      Cheers

"Everyone here is trying to rip you off." The VAST majority of people that I have met and gotten to know have been absolutely wonderful people. Paranoia can serve you well in some circumstances but here it is almost worthless. These are, for the most part, a good people. Just step outside of your comfort zone long enough to actually get to know some of them and you will see exactly what I mean. Yes , there are shitty scam artists about. But they are the exeption, not the rule.

    • @DaveDoesCambodia
      @DaveDoesCambodia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

100% agree! People always like to point out the exception to the rule but it's just that....an exception. I guess if you're looking for negative you'll find it. But it's much easier looking for positive because you don't have to look that far.

Don't expect everyone to speak English.
Most people in Cambodia can't speak English, or at least that's my understanding. The country's official language is Khmer, but from what I can gather many people in Cambodia will probably know French.
French is my second language, and because I can't speak Khmer, if I go to Cambodia I'll probably have to speak French instead.

I don't think simple possession of ice is that bad in Cambodia. No felonies to follow you around for the rest of your life like in the US. I couldn't imagine the authorities would want to foot the bill for your room & board for the next couple of years just because you got pinched for $100 worth of it.

Do they sell alcohol free beer in Siem Reap? I tend to like the Chinese TSINGTAO 0.0 Zero Alcohol Larger.

Bargain hard, but do it with a smile :)
The Khmers are the second best bargainers after the Chinese in my experiance. I guess they learned from interacting with the Chinese.
I still remember there subtile little smirks everytime I saw them overcharge someone :D
I would even go so far to say that some people in Cambodia and some neighbouring countries kind of look down on people who overpay. It's like your a spoiled person with too much money.
