    Hey Benjie, great job with videos as usual. Do you know of any Grunion beaches where you can park easily and walk in? Most of the beach parking lots close at 9 or 10pm. I sort of know the northern beach parking situation, but not below Huntington. No angles, no tangles, baby!

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try seal beach, first close to the jetty south of pier. I believe they’ve been seen north of the pier as well.

    Foul hooked = release at least that is what I remember from reading the regs.
    I'm gonna have to throw some LC next time these bad boys run

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The super glow electric grunion is a great “match the hatch” option!
      I believe the regs regarding foul hooking from the surf is that it’s ok. 1.05 is clear enough in its definition (as well as how it applies to freshwater) but then the application across different bodies of water as well as species (such as sturgeon) makes the interpretation a bit challenging. I could be wrong of course!
      Thanks for watching and the support!

    I've tried several years to catch the grunion run with my family, but never at the right beach. Closest we've seen was a scout at Cabrillo, but people chased after it with their flashlights. That killed the spawning grunions to come to shore. I wish there were signs posted of what you just said to educate people for a successful night of observation and catch for everyone.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha yea, I've gotten frustrated a few times but I also need to remember that this whole grunion experience caters to a very recreational crowd so it kind of is what it is.

    • @Chrissurf
      @Chrissurf ปีที่แล้ว

      So they send a scout?

    • @wasabi4u724
      @wasabi4u724 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chrissurf Yes. Scouts will come to shore, and if all is good, they'll go back to get the mass to come to shore.

    • @Chrissurf
      @Chrissurf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah sorry I laughed for asking w/ out watching the rest of video....but so I went 1st and 2nd night this run and first nite was a bust and so on the second nite it was a bit different than I expected.....we did see what I suppose were scouts but when a wave came ashore it was never where we saw the one or two scouts.....also no matter what we did they would not settle in and dig in to sand ......I have no idea how long it takes but we just didn't get the hundreds piled up. On another note those things are FAST.

    Nice halibut! Much tastier than grunion for sure! I've been wanting to night fish for a while but am waiting for warmer nights to do it.
    While I think true foul hooks happen, they've got to be incredibly rare. I mean, what are the chances of dragging your lure right into a wild fish that's totally adapted to its environment but somehow didn't notice a wobbling, rattling jerk bait coming right at it? Common sense says practically nil. I think the vast, vast majority of foul hooks are the fish attacking the lure but just slightly missing it and getting hooked lower down than its mouth.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't night fish often but there is certainly a sense of tranquility and peace that comes with enjoying the beauty of our coastline in the evening. Obviously make sure you are with others and be safe when you get out there!
      And I tend to agree with you regarding foul hooks. This one the hook was close to the middle of the back but I still think it was swiping. Its all conjecture though!
      Thank you always for your thoughtful comments!

    Update July 2022
    Due to recent population declines with the species, June was added to the no-take closure (now April 1 to June 30) and July 1 marks the new opener. There is also a new bag and possession limit of 30 grunion per person.

      Huntington Beach brotha! It can be hard to find em sometimes, they don't always show up in numbers! If you went on a run where you saw a few, chances are they will stack on a different night or run. Nights 2 & 3 are usually best.

  • @packjim56
    @packjim56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't care about the grunion. I care about the hungry halibut that eat them, waiting as they start stacking up in the surf a day or two before.
