Maybe unpopular opinion but I think one of the reasons WOW has stayed relatively popular is due to the artwork scheme and graphics. Therefore I actually think making the game look more "realistic" would end up hurting it in the long run but obviously just speculation.

I think a more realistic world of warcraft for virtual reality would be very cool with Unreal Engine 5 like a mages blast wave from the first cinnamatics were you snap your fingers and everything combusts would be fun.
With the advancements and optimizations in Unreal 5 engine, a scene even better than that will run 60fps 1080p on a 1070. They put some amazing voodoo in the latest engine.

WoW does use mostly statically terrain (nothing is moving or animated). If they would use something like Nanite it would fit perfectly even with phasing. Also they could render at practically photorealistic poly detail while rendering faster than todays wow. Even without super duper models it would render faster than todays wow renderer.

Shadowlands was my last time playing retail WoW. Blizzard has no idea what they're doing. Every single system in Shadowlands is designed to gate and slow progression for retention time. I've got better things to do.

The entire story, races, classes, expansions, etc has been written I just need help with actual funding which will come when I can get a working demo started with artists and programmers to start and a game like that can come to fruition and will take gaming to new heights.
