    About the weight: The Peltonen M95 Uncoated is actually 11 grams heavier than the Terävä 140. I think it's the grip that makes Peltonen feel lighter, along with the blade profile, which is much bulkier in the Terävä. In my field use the Peltonen is a clear winner between the two. I have both the uncoated Peltonen M95 and a Rokka Stainless (N690) when I'm out and about. Peltonen for the heavy tasks and the Rokka for fine tuning. They are a pair to beat.
    My Terävä 140 and 110 stay at home. But then again, they *are* a copy of the Peltonen's knives made by Varusteleka, as Peltonen knives were very hard to come by in the early 2010s when Teräväs were designed. Now Peltonen himself has retired and the knives are manufactured in a bigger (yet small) company and availability/options is no longer a problem.

    Got this knife as my confession gift, because I specifically asked for it. Absolutely great knife. Did me many favours hiking through the Finnish Lapland. This one time my min-maxer light hiker dad had decided packing an axe was just wasted kilos, and he had nothing on him except this idiotic 2-inch carving knife (something like this Roselli Vaarinpuukko, hopeahelat).
    The trip was around the halfway mark, and it had been raining for two days straight when he decided for us to stop in the middle of the best part of the day. This is saying something about the state of things since he isn't exactly made of sugar and we were already behind on schedule. (this was also coincidentally the first time in 10 years he had decided to give rain ponchos another chance as hiking gear). We did not have any other rain gear, no pants, no jackets, nada. We were completely soaked and both shivering aggressively (this was late autumn, first snow would fall within the week). There was about half a litre of water in my boots as we stopped to make camp around two o'clock, way earlier than was at all reasonable. Everything around us was seeped with water to a ridiculous degree. My dad was the undisputed fire-making expert of the whole family, owing to both extensive military training and 40 years of hiking in Lapland, so, of course, he started on the fire.
    I watched intently, with hungry eyes as he went about building the fire. It was windy, so he leaned the fire against a tree stump, which was full of flammable oils in its core and the perfect firewood, had it not been soaking wet. He pulled out a large stash of birch bark he had gathered, took a generous bundle, and placed it in between two legs of the stump. Over went the 1-inch thick sticks, which were carved to the brim with feathersticks. He had about twenty, and I watched longingly at the altar of fire, until he pulled a match to light, and light he did. I felt a flash of warmth and hope as the flames spread.
    The fire, however, did not last. In an instant the birch bark had burned, leaving the wet feather sticks untouched. This came as a complete shock. I myself am not useless at firemaking, but my dad is famous for being straight-up Prometheus himself. I have never in my life seen this man fail at making a fire, EVER. It's just one of those things that does not happen, until it did.
    Not to worry, my dad still has a lot of birch bark left, and he jumps straight for the second attempt. After much fanning and blowing, this one also dies out.
    At this point, I am utterly miserable. I have not eaten since breakfast, I'm shivering more than ever in my life and the future looks grim. Purely to stop my uncontrollable shivering, I set out to fix the situation. I took my trusty Peltonen Ranger Puukko M07, found a keeled pine tree about the thickness of a 1,5L bottle, and started swinging. Rage fueling my blows, I cut out an elbow-length piece in about half an hour and returned to camp. My dad was still squatting over the attempt at a fire, now somehow looking wetter than when I had left. I batoned the log into quarters, exposing the white heartwood core, which was completely dry. My excitement almost boiling over, I batoned the quarters into eights, and started making feathersticks out of the soft , sharp, wedges.
    With the help of the last of my dad's birch bark, I had a roaring fire in front of me, this one would not go out. My dad kept screaming "Se oli temppu!" "SE OLI TEMPPU!" (translation "That was a stunt!" This is a common saying popularized by the unknown soldier book and movies, used commonly in Finland for denoting something spectacular that completely changes the tide of battle).
    To this day my dad speaks of this event as if I had pulled a sword out of the stone, and been crowned king of the Britains. He also ends the story by emphasizing the importance of always packing an axe. I just feel legitimately happy for making my dad proud. I also will never in my life ever again wear a rain poncho (it's exactly the same as having no rain gear, except sweatier)
    TLDR: Great knife, works well for batoning.

      The fact is there is no fix it all solution to this problem. At the end of the day if it rains and youre exerting yourself, youre gonna be wet no matter what. The advantage of a modern set of rain jacket and pants is that you can be dry when standing still/at camp. As with a poncho youre gonna be wet all the time. As for venting holes and special membranes thats mostly talk. Any raincoat and pants will do as long as theyre not solid rubber.

    I'm a reserve officer myself and, if there ever occurred a need to go active, I would most certainly take the Peltonen M95 with me. And my Rokka; both of them. One in the vest and the other on the belt. And a small Victorinox/Leatherman in my pocket.
    The Rokka handle design is even better suited also for actual combat use, in addition to general use. That goes for the Peltonen as well, but to a lesser degree. But of course, the main use for a puukko are the camp chores, at least here in the Finnish military. Both. however, are designed by professionals for professional military use, that the Teräväs are not. Terävä is not a fighting knife; that's why it has been designed to be just a little bit bulkier (and maybe that's why it survived longer in the Joex's abuse show). The grip versatility in both Rokka and Peltonen are on a different level to Terävä and many many other knives available. The Rokka handle is very good for a Fairbairn grip, while also perfect for most other grip style used in buschcraft and woodwork..
    All three, however, are a good balance between everyday use and heavier military use. But these two are actually made for both bushcraft/camp use *and* actual combat. All are quite popular among the tens of thousands of FI conscripts entering the service each year.

    Love the Peltonen :) A funny fact is that the Terävä 110/140 is a Varusteleka variant of the Peltonen M95/M07. It is (Peltonen) made in the same factory as the Rokka and the Terävä (laurin metalli). You kept on saying it´s thinner than the Terävä but it´s actually the same thickness in the spine (4,2 mm). They are ground a bit different though, one has a "scandi" and the other is more of a "saber". All three are grat knives and you can´t go wrong with any of them :)

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely! Peltonen has a 7.5° grind (25° microbevel) whereas Terävä has a 10°grind (22° or 23° microbevel). Same overall thickness. The difference in grind makes a big difference in handling, especially with wood carving or food prepping.

    i own them all and id say for the smaller size go sissipuuko and for the longer blades go jaakaripuuko. The smaller jaakaripuuko is just a bit beastly for its size while the longer sissipuuko lacks weight and handle size for the size. Unless you want to go stabby stabby, the longer peltonen is more pointy (also its downfall when used as a tool in that size class) For big shovel hands, jaakaripuuko all the way regardless.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK I measured mine:
      M95=199g, T140=188g,
      M07=182g, T110=175g.
      So the Peltonen are 7 to 11 grams heavier than their counterparts. Their centers of balance are almost at the same spot. One difference is the grind and the fact that both Peltonen blades are ≈1cm longer measured from the first finger, but a tiny bit thinner.
      The grind angle and the tip curvature change the feel of the blade very much. But the biggest difference is the handle: to my hand the Terävä allows only one grip style, whereas Peltonen allows several. Both of these differences make the Peltonen feel lighter and like a "slicer" and Terävä feel like a "chopper", to me, at least.

      Same factory, same steel for the blades, different designers. The Peltonen profile looks and feels much thinner because of the 7.5° grind on a (same) 4.3mm blade, but Peltonen is actually heavier overall. That's because there is a bit more steel in the tang than in Terävä, and the knife is more balanced. Feels light and nimble for its size. 👍

  • @samuelfinland9587
    @samuelfinland9587 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually one need to be careful when choosing Peltonen Ranger knife. Coated knives (Cerakote and Teflon) have Saber grind but uncoated Scandi grind. If that matters.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually they all have the same microbevel, you can see it clearly against light in the uncoated version as well. The uncoated version has the 25° edge (and not the 7.5° sabre edge), but the sharpening process at the factory is new and the result is very sharp, almost feels like a scandi. But stronger.
      The factory sharpening of the edge has always been a strong point with Peltonen knives, even more so with the uncoated version, and in all versions after the coated versions are upgraded to the new design. You can differentiate between the older and newer by looking for the stamp on the side of the blade; the new process stamps the blade. (Of course, there are also the really old versions before 2015 which had Fiskars flat grind blades and not the sabre blades forged by Laurin Metalli)

      G'day mate, just picked up a Terava Puukko 140, so far I'm very impressed, ..... though I am still testing.
      Ummm, .... survival situation ........ the 140 is a secondary blade IMO, (or indeed a great camp knife), I'd much rather have a Skrama 240, BK-9, parang of some flavor, hatchet etc, etc I.e. much bigger/heavier as a primary tool for "survival" ..... I'm sure you get the drift. Yes of course you can survive with a 6 incher, depending on one's skill level, and for sure much easier with a decent saw to go with it, but man, really, why go out, (where survival could well be an issue), ....... without more grunt !!!
      Cheers Duke.

    Niiice! I had the OG leather sheath M95 from one of the first batches when I was serving in the FDF (in a Sissikomppania, actually, basically light infantry that specialized in recon and other independent ”behind the enemy lines” activities, aka. mayhem) back in ’94-95.
    During my time I used a Cold Steel Recon Tanto (Carbon V), managed to break one, got another as a replacement, then we bought a combo leuku and puukko from Iisakki Järvenpää as our NCO course knife, those didn’t see much use, then we got the chance to buy the M95 which I used through the rest of my service.
    I really liked it, used it for all kinds of bushcrafty activities when in the boonies (we spent *a lot* of time out in the field).
    After the army I didn’t have much use for it and basically forgot about it. Also, the fact that the blade is bent due to the heat treat which had curved the edge, and the spine also… so the blade is nowhere near straight… 😅 Didn’t bother me in field use but kinda put me off in civilian times, also, for scouting and other stuff it looked a bit too military and also, long.
    Might need to give the modern versions a try. :)

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, that's one of the first generation M95's with the Fiskars blade and differential heat treatment. Our son used one during his service two years ago and was very happy with it (and no bends), his platoon mates called it "the light saber" 😄 (I had to buy a new M95 for myself then)
      I can really recommend the current models, the uncoated M07 is very good for all kinds of chores and not overly military-looking. The uncoated version has a new handle mold that feels nicer in the hand (and a Peltonen logo stamped in the blade). I asked Lamnia to update the product pics when the other models' stock switch to the new mold as well. As soon as that happens I'll buy a green Cerakote M07 to my wife for her gardening chores.

  • @max_ljv
    @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I'm happy you found the one spot on the uncoated version where it's possible to strike sparks! 😄 (The first 2cm from the tip of the blade) As you guessed, the back of the blade is indeed rounded to make it more comfortable to use while holding the thumb there. Almost all puukkos are made that way, because it's the most common grip while using a puukko for anything wood related.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, after a hunderd or so stab strikes through a windshield and metal, of which many came at an angle. You only need the have a small crack at the side, as a result of those glass strikes, to have the blade break later against the pole. You are aware how unforgiving laminated windshield glass is to a blade, aren't you?
      The unbelievably effective 7.5° sabre profile is not built for that. JoeX's videos are entertainment and the processes unreliable. No knife is meant for any of the abuse JoeX does. But everyone knows that already. ;)
      Plus the Terävä 140 JoeX abused broke a lot sooner than the 110 which he described as unbreakable, although they have the same profile and same steel. That probably is a tell of the precision of Joe's method...

      @@DutchBushcraftKnives Peltonen has a 25 degree edge (compared to Rokka 10° with tiny convex and Terävä 23°), that might be the optimal grind for 80CrV2 at 59HRC, along with the 7.5° sabre grind.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Harnsess of the blade, especially the hrc number, the companies provide,has little to do with edge retention. Even the fact, of how the knife was sharpened, can make the same knife, produce a very big difference,in edge retention. Then, it's the fact, that the scandi edge on the Roka, is way more delicate, than any saber or full flat grind. That means, that scandis, have the lowest edge retention and edge stability, comapred to any other type of grind and Pentloten, comes with saber, which is exactly the opposite, in terms of grinds and how it performs. That's why Scandi grinds shave wood easier, they are the sharpest, but they lack in every single other aspect, even in slicing ability,which is the poorest, on scandi grinds! Also, keep in mind, that a succesful Heat treatment, has little to do, with the rockwell hardness number (hrc). Edge angle ,edge type and way the edge was sharpened (a small burr for exammple. can reduce the edge retention a lot). frc, has little to do, with edge retention, it's just a number, to give you a little idea,but nowhere near the complete picture.
      Hope this helps.

    Absolute respect.
    I bought a couple of these because Finland are experts in survival under extreme conditions so I figured that the knife they issue to the armed forces would be up to muster. It was.
    The sheath system is fantastic and it took me a while to realise why. It takes very little force to remove the knife, but it is highly resistant to shock-force because of the rubber wheel. Basically its a knife that slides out of the sheath easily in your hand, but does not want to drop out from inertia. This means you can hang it upside down from your webbing, it wont drop out during a parachute drop but will still slide out easily and quietly when you need it.
    Fantastic knife.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi,
      All Peltonen knives have the same grind; 7.5° sabre grind with a 25° microbevel. I confirmed the micro bevel angle from the company and they replied the 25° seems to be the overall best angle for sharpness and strength for this blade.
      There is no Peltonen with a true scandi, since that would be too weak for all general use other than cutting. (Of these knives, only Rokka has a true scandi with a tiny microbevel or convex.)
      The new uncoated versions of Peltonen do have a slightly different blade shape, but the grind angles are the same. I like the new profile's pointier tip and overall shape better. They said all versions will have the new profile, but the (Lamnia) store is still selling the older stock.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the grooves are definitely for winter and/or wet conditions, I think. When I was in the military, one of the guys slit his palm very deeply while handling a Leuku with a wooden grip, in the winter forest. He had to discharge from the military for over a year because of that wound. You really don't want the handle to slip while the tempereature is below -15°C or the conditions are muddy and slippery.
      Wood is beautiful and durable, rubberized plastic is safer and more practical, IMO.

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Plus; the handle in the Rokka is clearly designed for a Fairbairn grip in addition to other more traditional ways to hold a Puukko.
      Since the fingerguard is a rubber protrusion instead of large metal shapes, you can use the Rokka as a Puukko, but the aggressive grooves at the back of the handle are clearly for a Fairbairn grip thumb, and the aggressive shape of the first finger groove is to help the finger apply pressure to the handle against the thumb. This will result in a secure stabbing grip with a very small fingerguard. And the rear of the handle curves downwards to accomodate the palm in a stabbing grip. (That is the reason why Terävä is not a combat stabber; you can't have a Fairbairn grip with it. Peltonen, however, does allow that, but not quite as securely as the Rokka. Peltonen is more a tool than weapon. Terävä is fully a tool.)

    I tried to disassemble a Euro pallet with my Peltonen m95 and broke the tip of the knife. How did this happen? Is the steel bad, or maybe I got a forged one???

    • @max_ljv
      @max_ljv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No knife is meant for prying nor crowbaring wood with the tip, if that's what you did...? The 7.5° sabre grind tip is definitely not good nor meant for that; it's meant for precise cutting (and stabbing if necessary). If you really want and need to pry with a knife with full armlength force, better buy a Glock 78 that has a soft enough steel for that purpose; it'll survive a bit longer than a HRC59 knife. I do think the Glock's tip will break or bend, too, though.
      I call the Glock a "crowbar with a soft edge" ;) Or try a Terävä with much bulkier tip angle than Peltonen, but the bulkier tip of course is *a lot* harder to get into/between the wood in the first place.
      The best bet for disassembling a wooden pallet is to buy a real crowbar with a thin and wide edge. ;)
