  • Alcoholism or Alcohol Use Disorder is the current term to describe the abuse of Alcohol or being addicted to Alcohol. However even naming the addiction to alcohol a 'disorder' conveys a fundamental misunderstanding of this addiction. Alcoholism is a symptom of deeper wounds originating from being out of control and feeling unsafe in your relationships. Once we understand this deeper root, can we really get a handle on this addiction which is afflicting and effecting so many people in the world today.

    I am a twelve stepper and regularly attend meetings. I like what is being spoken here. AA does the best it can with what it has got to offer. It works for me. What is commonly heard at meetings is that alcohol use makes things worse, never better over a period of time. Outside help is never discouraged but encouraged. I was given 'bedrock" information to use as I moved thru the many obstacles in my life. As teal stated, these were the first sober and spiritual people I had ever met. That being said I was able to move toward a spiritual life which in turn has led me to these wonderful videos. AA is a great place to begin one's journey. I have never looked back.

      (Note: People that 12 step do not speak for the program itself, we just share our experience). My experience was an admission that I am powerless over my addiction. That is very important, the body & mind crave the substance and it is simply beyond a singular person's ability to defeat in most if not all cases. Teal suggesting that we are NOT powerless over the substance is not correct. If Teal were to use heroin for a period of time, she would definitely be powerless to give it up. No doubt about that, she'd do anything to make it continue and hopefully anything to make it stop

    This is sooo true what Teal says about unsafety in relationships. My family members are dysfunctional, insensitive, invalidating people who dont understand anything about emotions. I recently got into a fight with my mother and sister and I was dismissed and invalidated by both. Once I came home I drank three days in a raw to numb the severe pain of complete and total unsafety in relationships. Cause it hurt like hell.
    But this video made sense of my suffering... it soothed my soul and gave me hope. Thank you darling Teal ❤ Thank you for all that you are doing for the healing of this world

  • @ej-ci7cy

    I agree with many of Teal's points (criticisms) about recovery, rehab, and 12 step programs. However, it says directly in the AA book that "drinking is but a symptom" ...she didn't invent that one, and 12 step programs don't disagree with it at all. Also, it's a common saying in AA that "we're not bad people getting good but sick people getting well" and it is often emphasized that alcoholism is NOT a moral issue, so she's wrong about that, too. Finally, many of the things Teal recommends are things that are suggested in recovery programs. Last but not least, it's hilarious that she has adopted the circle/triangle as her own symbol! To thine own self be true, lol.

  • @annaleckiemusic
    @annaleckiemusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Cool vid- AA and the literature deems alcoholism a spiritual malady and a physical allergy. I definitely agree with almost everything was shared but AA never blames addiction on a morality issue or will-power at all. Quite the opposite. I regular attend meetings and actively participate in the program and the work with in the program has helped me work on traumas and heal and ultimately find your work! I’m blessed to have a wonderful recovery community. There are also very really guidelines socially on how to protect people from those who are sick in the program and not doing what they need to do who could be a danger to others. It’s not a one size fits all program either and encourages your own discovery of what is spiritually healing for you.

      "Most people are completely unaware that alcohol consumption is a toxic behavior"
      First, most people are very aware what alcohol can do to them if not consumed responsibly.
      When getting drunk just for fun or bored or for whatever reason yes, some people do become ignorant or violent, or even pose a risk to themselves by losing their balance or worse, getting behind the wheel of a car.
      Not every person who has a drink is an alcoholic despite your unfounded claim.
      We live in a world where some people feel entitled to tell the rest of the world how to live their lives.

      When 12 steps was originally started, it was the best supported way of getting sober. Our understanding of addiction over the years has improved immensely. No program is perfect and 12 steps definitely should had been adjusted as time went on, but there was one reason why it was pushed; seeing, knowing, and understanding they weren't alone. Again, it is flawed but sadly no mention of how it did help a lot of people. No one wants to talk about that

    There are so many things you “point out” in this video about your understanding of the 12 step process that is not true... I would love to have an extended conversation with you about this any time even live or being taped for others to see! For example the reason people keep going for 20 years is to help others!!! Not because they “have to”! I want to help explain, not criticize. “Meetings” NEVER are the solution... a Spiritual Awakening is!!!

    • @okyougotme123
      @okyougotme123 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree with the notion that those who are there for 20 years are simply there to help others. I would argue, as I have witnessed it first hand many times, that they are more likely to have skipped important steps like the 4th, 5th, and 10th, and rushed right to step 12 (mentoring(spreading the AA gospel)) to avoid looking at and working on themselves and get a sense of control and self righteousness. If they really wanted, or were even qualified for that matter, they would go into social work, not hang around some unaccredited church hall doling out penny cliches and advice. AA is a cult and the notion that it "allegedly" helps 3% of its members does not outweigh the iatrogenic damage and shame it causes the other 97%. Many are not mentally/emotionally healed, and have simply replaced a chemical addiction with an ideological addiction to a cult.

    • @maryshea6508
      @maryshea6508 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It scares me how people in the "spiritual" communities bad talk AA. Because of messages like these I avoided AA and getting the help I really needed. It delayed awakening by 2 years. Alcoholism kills people. AA saves lives. I used to hold the same mentality Teal and like minded spiritual leaders share. I respect that AA is not the only way to sobriety and Our book is meant to be suggestive only! But it saved my life and pulled me out of the denial that I was so deeply in perpetuating all the new age ideas that were coming at me.
      I now take caution listening to anyone that would speak negatively about a program that they themselves have not personally done and cannot identify with. As we say, You cannot transmit something you haven't got.

    I agree with a lot of the points you make, but as someone who has attended 12 step groups, I'd have to say that a lot of your "issues" with 12 step groups are the exact opposite of what these groups believe in. Your beliefs actually align with the beliefs of these programs. Reading the alcoholics anonymous book cover to cover, it is clearly expressed through the literature that alcoholism is NOT a moral failing. And we are only powerless over the addiction, but we control our own recovery. Only once we admit that we no longer have the control over our substance are we able to understand that we DO hold the power to make a change and do something about it. We accept what we cannot change, change what we can, and strive for the knowledge to know the difference. And yes, some people who attend these meetings do believe in a typical Christian God, but in essence, the higher power that we are identifying with is just a force that is not our own ego. Although we call it God, I see it as my higher self, my connection the universe. In no way do 12 step programs believe that this is a matter of willpower- it's exactly the opposite in fact. We view alcoholism/addiction as a spiritual sickness; therefore the solution to our problem must be spiritual as well. I also loved the perspective that these feelings of being unsafe in relationships are the root cause. We just refer to it as "fear" in general. We also know that the individuals that make up the group can cause lots of harm- or are perfect candidates for "unsafe relationships". But the focus is not on the individuals, its on the group as a whole. The twelfth tradition of 12-step groups states that we should focus on "principles, not personalities" for this very reason. Anyway, I know this is a very long comment, but I really connected with what you were saying, and a lot of what you said I've learned (just in different wording) through attending 12 step meetings and working the 12 steps.

      She's only repeating "good points " that were already credited to doctors and scientists. Her team did the research on Google, put it on a screen and after rehearsing a few times, she read it.
      She's getting credit from her followers who could easily do the same search with the same results but they don't because they rather she tell them given that many treat her like a Deity; she's not. Treating alcoholism is not new and not everyone who drinks has and psychological disorders/moods, or trauma. Sometimes people like having a drink because they can and enjoy it. Others over indulge, while others do use it to numb some pain. Nothing she said was of new evidence or even groundbreaking. All that happened was she read a scripts topic that nearly 15 million people can relate to in various ways. The vast majority of her videos are done in the exact same way. So I'm reading this book series by Samuel Sagan the Atlantean Secrets, is actually what gave me the desire and a belief that I can stop drinking. It always seems like when anxiety gets so bad I just go back to drinking again. But there's a part in this book that talks about how we need to cook in the fire to refine us. And I realize that even though it's painful and uncomfortable and I have to deal with emotions and anxiety and stuff that I don't want to have to deal with, it will be worth it. Anyway the
    Withdrawals are like staying in the fire, and even though it's causing me pain and discomfort temporarily, ultimately it's going to be really good for me. Thank you Teal! I love you!

      Why do you assume that only men hit women? Maybe rephrase to " why do people use violence against one another?" (The answer is their need to "control" other people)
      I watched my npd father use violence on my mother a few times growing up. I've never hit a woman in my life, yet married a npd woman who had no problem using violence on me....so I can honestly say that violence is not something that only men partake in (even though I used to believe the same as you;). It's a gender neutral behavior pattern that our society (for whatever reason) seems to cover up when it comes to how much women use violence on their children and partners.
      I am sorry you witnessed what you did as a child, but I can promise you that there are more men that are not violent than there are ones that engage in violence as a control tactic. (Wounded people will never find these types of healthy partners untill they heal themselves and learn to love themselves properly)

    Dear Teal, thank you for your video! That’s very exciting and there is a lit of truth, but 12 steps and moral?! Never ever. Actually the concept is based on the same stuff: addiction is a coping mechanism for the dealing with the childhood trauma. I don’t know who disinform you, but it would be really sad, if some addicts believe your information and don’t reach out to the AA etc. which is the most helpful way to overcome the addiction because it’s actually not about just not use, but about dealing with the pain and change the patterns.

    Hi Teal, I am responding from a Christian standpoint, I believe alcoholics are powerless over alcohol "by themselves." That is why the belief in a power that is higher, bigger, stronger than the alcohol is the fundamental reason AA works. Prayer and the power of God and making something else such as faith and belief and healing the focus of their life instead of drinking is the thing that transforms people into a recovering alcoholic. A person can turn their life over to God AND allow him to heal them AND face all of their wounds and reasons they are drinking. It is a "both-and," not one or the other. My sister is a recovering alcoholic. I walked that path with her and her children for 6 years (as a codependent by the way!!!). I have seen alcoholism up close and personal. I believe she is alive by a miracle. ps, a relationship with God is always safe. It may be the only safe relationship they ever have!

AA works because it gives a group and community to people who feel very alienated. But the fact is that AA doesn't dig into the root problem. It doesn't address emotional trauma at all and makes it seem like the problem is entirely due to lack of spirituality, selfishness, resentment, allergy. It blames the victim.

    While the analysis in this video on what could be considered as "the" root cause of alcoholism, childhood trauma,and that identifying and dealing with this trauma will end the need to use alcohol as a self medication cruch for the unhealed unconscious pain, I find it quite flawed and irresponsible..
    Something an amateur shrink would babble out....trauma, that people may attempt to deal with the pain by using alcohol or any drug, can and does occur at any stage of a person's life, not just childhood....and alcohol, like drugs abused to deal with pain, causing a chemical reaction in the brain/ body specifically releasing dopamine, a "feel good" chemical naturally produced when one experiences joy or when it is artificially produced by alcohol when one is trying to not feel pain albeit physical or emotional...this then contributes to alcohol becoming addictive in all aspects that one can be one addicted, physically, emotionally, and of course psychologically....
    This "perspective" belongs to ms. Swan and not to a general audience because it is not comprehensive nor educational on the complexities and varied attributes as to what addiction is or alcoholism. The information given might be well intended but to generalize and misinform the entirety of this complex issue to a diverse audience is dangerous and therefore irresponsible.

    • @sammysam2615
      @sammysam2615 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing but facts. I agree intent more than likely genuine. Yet, treatment for alcoholism is not universal and consist of smiles and group hugs. Recovery is long, difficult, and different for everyone. Going back to the cause is so wide and you're absolutely correct when stating that trauma that leads to dependency is not equal for each.
      A vet returning from multiple combat tours is not the same as a child being raped or beaten. More information is needed to understand just complex it is given how many people experience trauma, lasting individual effect, when using alcohol, plants, drugs, pharmaceuticals, how so after the event(s) any previous treatment, and why so many others with similar or worse experiences never used any product that has the potential for dependency.

    Agree with many aspects presented here, and will also note that Teal has much confusion around the AA 12 step program. Many of the points she raised were totally incorrect. The program gets tailored to the individual by way of a trusted sponsor. A massive emphasis is placed on forming safe friendships within the sober community. There’s tons of social activities and a welcoming, structured environment that’s presented on day 1. AA is all about building relationships with 3; 1. Yourself 2. Your higher power (could be nature, an ancestor, anything) 3. Community through outreach with other program members and calling 3 people a day & through 12-step service commitments that you sign up for when you join; baking cookies, bringing coffee, reading in meetings, etc. There’s a lot of depth to it, like anything else if it helps someone stop sabotaging themselves and find friendship and community-that can’t be the worst outcome. Whether or not one continues to identify as an alcoholic or attend meetings…that’s up to the individual. AA is a great refuge for people looking for sober friends and spiritual solution. Meditation & prayer are the foundations of the program. Millions of free and, private and secured zoom meetings online. If you don’t want to be in rooms with “criminals” who are legally required to attend 12-step meetings (Teal’s words) then simply attend *closed* meetings. Take care all. Lots of good stuff here, and, alcohol is poison.

    This was a very interesting video, and well done on a number of points; however, I don’t get the impression that Teal has a clear understanding of AA. Yes, I’m a member. AA and the Big Book do not accuse alcoholism on morality nor is it considered a matter of self control; far from it. The desire to stop drinking unites those of us who are in AA by choice. A relationship with my higher power is absolutely critical; but my higher power encourages healthy relationships with other humans, so the loneliness suggested in the talk is the opposite of what God wants from me. AA also highly encourages healthy relationships... come early and stay late, and the “who have you helped today?” mentality are part of us. I highly encourage people to be open and check AA out. Each meeting has its own vibe, so check out different meetings and you might find a good fit and life changing help.

    AA and NA literature SPECIFICALLY states multiple times that addiction is NOT A MORAL FAILING.

    Thank you, Teal. I am 11 years sober, and participated in AA for the first 5 years. I both stayed for the positive reasons you stated here so precisely, and left for the same reasons you stated here. I am now focused completely on trauma integration and Somatic Experiencing, as I have tried everything to run from the causation of the addiction, and anyhow I ended up here. My life is finally changing. Thank you again for your care and precision, which equals love.

    Hi Teal, what happens to a person's soul in the afterlife when they have been an alcoholic all their life? My dad was an alcoholic and he died from alcohol. Do they realise the pain they caused on the other side?

    • @caitm8209
      @caitm8209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the other side we are a lot more than what we were in our life. Our spirits are way bigger than our human self. Our human life is just a tiny fragment of what we truly are. So yes I would say your dad, as the total spirit he is, absolutely understand the pain his human life caused. In fact, your spirit and his spirit likely had a contract to put you in that pain in this life. Your spirit is much bigger than the pain you have in this life.

    Look into learning more about AA. you have a lot of valuable information but more would be better. the are more every day ordinary people more than those from prison. And the is a complete difference between alcohol and drugs. AA is for Alcoholics and NA narcotics anonymous for drugs.

    I just got your book a few days ago and have gotten to the part of creating a safe haven and it's like my higher self knows what's coming or maybe just the peace of half ass visualizing the safe haven while I'm reading is really "doing something to me" for extreme lack of a better term. I always told my family that if I could work through everything they put me through as a kid, I could heal and wouldn't have addiction problems. But I was a textbook scapegoat for all of them so they were "just trying to help me" since I was so sick and all. Lol! Now I'm helping them and all the younger generation of my family break the cycle of that dysfunction. Very satisfyingly ironic. Can't wait to meet you and collaborate one day Teal! Thank you, I truly appreciate your work.

      Funny you say that, couldn't put my finger on it but didn't want to speculate. I will say if I went through what she did, I would have to teach myself how to laugh too, she didn't learn it naturally from healthy parenting. Almost like a Cheshire Cat inside to force on the happy mask. Quite strange yet unique and endearing I find. Then again, I'm biased because I love her so much!

    Excellently video and explanation regarding this subject.
    I get the part of not feeling safe in relationships. Relationships with others and may be the relationship within myself....? It is also great to see and hear someone explain addiction is a way to cope with pain within one's self, from the past. In my opinion the focus is it is a disease, illness. It is a - dis - ease, within self, faulty learnt programming from the past. The addiction is a symptom and not the cause, in my opinion to distract from the feeling within, emptiness and shame. Deal with the cause, feel what is happening within, what are the thoughts in the moment creating the feeling and face with love and acceptance. I sometimes want some one to just listen to how I feel inside, sometimes very dark thoughts, but listen and accept with out judgement. I don't feel safe to do this within relationships.
    I do create this space for my daughter when she is upset, hoping she feels ok to express how she feels in the moment and within herself, with acceptance and love. May be I need to create this more for myself.
    Thank you Teal for another great video. With love.

    16 years clean n sober on Jan 16 2022.
    I was 15 yrs AA ...5 years of that in group therapy, many yrs of that in counselling one to one, still in a men's support group and..... Ayahuasca, a few times in the past when I hit emotional walls and could not move forward.....
    Yup... I felt unsafe, frightened, angry, self loathing and utterly ashamed of myself, I was suicidal long before I quit...
    The reason I found it hard to quit... Was ...I didn't think there was a life out there for people like me with out booze and drugs... Failures like me did not deserve a decent life...
    But hey... Once I made the decision to stop .. I looked for support, I got better and better one day at a time..
    My life changed.... Positively.
    I've left AA last yr ... my life is pretty good... You see I LEARNED TO TRUST MYSELF ... that is the bottom line .. trust yourself/ self love ... I've never believed something out there was a higher power..... I knew that power was in me.... I just needed to trust that and then move on .. and I did.
    You are more capable than you've ever believed, you are likeable, loveable and worth the effort in every way... When you decide to stop.. seek support. Bless you,.... Do not give up.

    Alcohol lowers your spiritual vibration for at least 24 hours after you’ve consumed it so it would be very very hard for someone who’s addicted to alcohol to tread a normal spiritual path anyway.

  • @oraevalibby1890

    I think that alcoholism also taps you into your spiritual self that people don't do when sober, drugs the same. It shows the need for the balance in the spirit to complete the flesh& visa versa.
