  • If you don't have an audience already, releasing a full length album can be a confusing and downright depressing experience. There's a better way. Justin Colletti offers a better release strategy, more suited for the 21st century.

    I started playing guitar in 1960.....I began making a living as a performer in 1965, then as an arranger, then as a mixer, then as a producer. I am 70 years old at the moment. I've learned that here is no such thing as failure, there is only "giving up"... and there are only things that work or don't work. Best advice?........never stop learning. Mostly, I've 'failed' my way through life with everything I ever undertook to do....... until I finally started to understand and then something would start working for me. Every project is a new venture requiring new information and learning. Most of my life has been a steady stream of building 'failures' from the ground up into a few spectacular successes, which I'm comfortably living on to this day. I love my life.......

      @Winston Porter There are always pitfalls.....the music 'scene' is a shark pit for the unwary. To balance that, I will say some of the best people I've had the honor to deal with were professional musicians and producers. Today's scene is so far removed from where you and I started that young musicians wouldn't even understand some of the circumstances that created great tunes back then. We were fortunate, my friend, to have lived through that period.....but, I think that makes us living dinosaurs. LOL

    I’m so glad I have the mind set I do 🙌 I have a long plan and non of it is over reaching but allowing the dream to exist ... my motivation after my simple love of music is the healthy progression of global society 👀😖🙌👀🤦‍♂️ I speak out in video format I also now live feed protests and rally’s(as of this year)and of corse iv been dropping songs and a few live streams of me performing ... iv been on quit the personal journey and to be in a place where I not only love the music we make but I’m also in a place to take it to people 💚 my approach is along the lines and mind set of what your saying here... all the things I mentioned above lead to one another and promote each other in one way or another . I am ever the realist as much as I am the dreamer , so maybe with more hard work ,thoughtfulness dedication and luck I might be able to make a living off my passion and help with the movement towards a better society (basically re forming how we structure society and doing away with the input from the ruling classes) 👀👀👀 “basically” he says 👀😂🤞 but I’ll be making sure to have fun all the way haha thanks for all you do and if you wanna check me anywhere it’s @ Guywithafork everywhere ✌️💚☯️🔱 thank you sooo much for all your tips and tricks and insight 🙏

    Thanks Justin for reminding us of the importance of this!
    Releasing a track per month consistently seems like a very good plan. I've thought about doing it like that. In my case I want to release with CDbaby because I don't want my music removed if I miss a yearly payment or die or whatever, so, if I did it like that right now it'd be $30 per single(pro), which would be 360$ per year, vs $70 for the whole album, and that's probably the main downside for me. Other than that I think it's the perfect strategy nowadays.
    Releasing an album and disappearing for a year might work once you are well established and even that is questionable.
    Plus having monthly deadlines forces you to be more productive and efficient. Therefore it'd difficult not to improve every month. Also, it's a very reasonable amount of time to finish a track even if you have another job/obligations

    The best strategy though is to get a chief position at Spotify. It will take some years to get to the position but then you are granted to be a multi millionaire.
    Personally I'm preferring albums. It's the way I listen and therefore often ignore singles.
    But yes for an unknown band or artist this is a well known strategy, releasing singles to grow awareness. It's been like that in decades : )

    People seem to forget it's not singles vs. album. For me it's singles leading to an album. 4-5 singles of a 9-10 track album. Album is great for selling physicals, having the artwork as part of your branding etc.

I released my second EP a couple of days ago using the singles that i released. I am planning on releasing one more EP in a few months and then an album Early in 2025 using the songs that performed the best as well as new songs. What do you think of that idea? 🙏 Thank you sir!

      A lot of artists have become very successful breaking the rules. The new rule of "just release singles" is, well, a rule. It wouldn't make sense for some genres like Prog Rock. It makes a lot of sense for pop, rock, country, rap, and everything on the radio. I think songs stand or fall on their own merit. If you release great music, does it matter if it's a song or an album? Once everyone has shifted to dropping singles, putting out an album might be different and unique.

    • @jordancooperlalala
      @jordancooperlalala 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for that. This video unfortunately does hit close to home. I put out my debut album that I worked for years and years on (about 9 years) and, as he says, nobody cared. I sent it to college radio all over the country, promoted it for weeks and weeks and weeks, did everything I could, but just nothing happened from it.
      I don't regret making it...I love my album...And I think it may still prove useful as a work to link people to or give to people (I've given it to a lot of people I'm a fan of)... But I fear all this work I'm doing for my second album (and actually a few other albums in the works too) is just all going to be for nothing. I have no idea how to build an audience. I have done what Justin suggests where I continually record new songs and demos and etc and constantly put stuff out there, but it's almost like my audience has gotten smaller, if anything.

    This makes sense and is definitely food for thought. The problem is old school/ new school and you’re right the “ album listening generation has all but died off because there’s so much variety and instant choice these days. To be honest I cannot remember the last time I sat down and listened to an entire album myself... it’s those old habits that hold us back.
    Did an album with a guitar and everytime we did a new track I put it out so , consequently, by the time we had enough trax everyone had already heard the content. The other problem is the download situation.... no one really buys CDs anymore and trying to make money from
    Your release is pretty much out the window. This time Im working solo..... done about 7 trax so far.... far as Im concerned they’re amazing!!!..... really wanna put them out there but this time I’m just compiling them and holding on so your above video was really helpful.
    I have discovered that each track is surpassed by the next one so I’m glad I’ve put nothing out yet..... time to build a strategy!! Many thanks.

    The fact is artists have absolutly no plan of releasing.. You can tell them again and again. They think when the music is done with all the produktion and mixing , mastering, the work is done. But then nobody cares about theire music, when there´s no promotion and advirtising going on. For all artists out there: The work beginns after your music is finished and save youre money for this time. The other hard work, is to engineer your album or songs, by a good enginner, who has worked theire ace off, to give you the right sound. When releasing the Album or the songs, without any video or promotion, you will shit on your engineer. That´s the truth , l want more respect for the good enginners out there!!!! Like Justin said, working for 1Yaer for an album and then dropping in one day!!!! Come on guys that doesn´t work.!!

    In order to promote your music you gotta find some youtube channels in your genre who have followers and ask for your music to be played if possibe. Also dont be an a*** and donate the youtuber some symbolic fee to show your appreciation. All of a sudden you ll get attention and views. Put out an album or an EP if you want to release once in 6 months or a year something because a youtube channel which uploads daily albums or EPs and has a follower funbase won't be putting up every month your singles.

  • @realNincompoopline
    @realNincompoopline 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lol you cant find "listeners" if there's nothing they could listen to 😂 so finding listeners before dropping anything doesn't make any sense at all. Isn't this obvious?!

    • @SonicScoop
      @SonicScoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. But the question is, do you drop 12 songs at once that you slaved over for a couple years, when you have no listeners?
      Or do you start off by taking a smarter and more modern approach of building an audience bit by bit as you release things bit by bit?
      Hope that helps make sense of it!
