He was not underrated; he was a mega star of his time. He may be underrated now; because music today can't hold a candle to music back then, when artist wrote and sang their music. Not like band and singers today; who sing songs others wrote, and use auto-tuners to fix their voices. Session musicians playing the music for them.
No; when I was in school, Bob Seger was everywhere. The radios played his songs all the time. The man's a legend, but legends sometimes get forgotten, and that's what happens to him. Never forget the music of the past.

Daniel, for almost 60 years (in the business) Bob has been known as one of the greatest storytellers in the business. Every song of his is an experience. He somehow meshed Country Rock/Southern Rock, Pop, Folk and R&B into a single style. I don't think the man ever had a bad song in his life. You could close your eyes, pick a song, react and have a smile on your face all day. The man is just pure musical genius.

Now that you've heard it, imagine the stage completely dark, then as Alto Reed hits the first note he is hit with a blue spotlight. When Bob starts singing, a red spotlight is on him. The rest of the stage stays dark. That was how I first saw this song performed live many years ago. An incredible visual to go along with a great song.

Bob Seger is one of my all time favorite artists. He's a profoundly great lyricist ( one of the best IMO), great singer, songwriter. The man has done it all; Acid rock in his early days with the Bob Seger System, and various flavors of rock, folk/rock, blues with The Silver Bullet Band and the Mussel Shoals Band. He OWNED Rock 'n' Roll radio in the late '70s to early '80s, just hit after hit after hit, all of them great songs, not fluff. And, by all accounts, one the nicest and humblest superstars ever. This is a deep, DEEP well of great music. Did I mention he's one of my all time favorite artists?

I saw him and his band play at a fancy concert hall. They were so good that when it was over the crowd was still clapping as we all exited and got into our cars. Then everybody started beeping their horns in a joyful way celebrating the greatness of the concert that we all experienced. The pure joy continued to be evident in how everyone was driving by letting other cars cut in practicing good manners while waving and smiling at each other as if we all had a common bond of joyful humanity. I've been to a lot of concerts and never saw anything like that reaction after a concert. Side note: long hair back then was a sign that you were cool. Short hair was a political statement that you were part of the establishment. It was easy to spot a narc in high school and college - they all had short hair. Adults with short hair would always crack the same lame joke about "Are you a woman or a man?"

Bob Seger has to be one of the best songwriters and has so many big hits, also he went to the same High School as my older sister in the 60s Bloomfield Hills in Mich. outside of Detroit.

Bob Seger has an awesome raspy voice and a unique style. He has so many hits you could dive into. You picked up on the controlled power and intensity in this ballad and you're right - that is part of his style and when he lets loose he's got one of the most powerful voices in rock. You might try ballads like Main Street, Against the Wind, Like a Rock or Night Moves, or bangers like Old Time Rock and Roll, Fire Down Below, Her Strut or my personal favorite Katmandu.

I grew up in northwestern Ohio and saw Bob Seger numerous times, starting in the late 60s when he was only known around Michigan and Ohio mostly. Actually saw him at the teen center in my hometown for 50 cents...we knew even then Bob was gonna be a star...

Bob is such a storyteller! To be honest, when I first heard this song as a kid, I thought he was speaking of the life of a trucker!
Such a beautiful, mournful piece. Will forever be my favourite Bob Seger track.
You'd be wise to continue down this rabbit hole, he's got so many amazing songs! Hollywood Nights, Strut, Against The Wind, Night Moves, Main Street, Kathmandu...that's just for starters.

I saw them in the mid 70's, and it was one of those concert moments I will never forget. I was a rather indifferent Bob Seger fan, liked them but not a huge fan, (a lot of awesome music vying for attention back then) but I was on the crew that built the stage so I stayed for the show and while the show was good, this song was the tour de force. The Sax player had climbed up on the speaker columns stage left, so was maybe 30 foot above the crowd and ten foot or more above the stage, and first you heard those beautiful sax notes just floating on the night air but didn't see him on the stage and then the spotlights found him up on the speakers as he just reared back and let it wail. I wish I could articulate it better but it was awesome.

SEGER, yay!!!!! A ton of great songs. Against the Wind, Beautiful Loser, Come to Poppa, The Fire Inside, Main Street, Against the Wind and many more. Thanks for this, Daniel.
The line about "is it a woman or a man" is referencing the cultural divide in the 60s when men and boys started letting their hair grow long. I had relatives who said exactly those words. In HS in the late 60s one of my best friends was jumped by some on the varsity football team because he let his sideburns grow too long. They shaved his head to make an example of him. Others that I knew were verbally and physically harassed, a few were beat up.

Yes, my young Padawan, there are many other Bob Seger songs to visit. Night Moves, Against the Wind, Mainstreet, Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight... That's enough to get started on, it's a deep catalog. I've heard the "Is that a woman or a man" line plenty, back in the day, usually a bunch of guys who wanted to start a fight, I guess they needed to prove they were more "manly" than a long-hair. It gets old real quick.

The quote I have on my Skype page at work is "I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then." - Bob Seger. It means so much as I get older. Bob Seger's lyrics are quite deep and relatable I won't tell you the song this quote comes from. It's a great song too, so I hope you'll hunt for it and give it a listen as well some day. Bob Seger is one of the best.

Daniel, im trying to feel what it must be like to listen for the 1st time, Music. Music Art- of a depth not equaled since Beethoven and his peers. From Chuck Berry, To Bob Seegar, to The Beatles and Pink Floyd and from Allman Brothers to Green Day. Aretha Franklin to Lou Reed, to Paul Simon to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and from Muddy Water and Billy Preston to the Grateful Dead. You are lucky---in that--you are one of the few people who are listening for the 1st time.....and diving deeper into the sound, the meaning.....and the influences that created this music. From the 50s to 80s.....and with some exceptions --more recent. A sound--an art----of humanity----not equaled---almost ever in human history. Jazz, Rock, Soul, R & B. Misery--poverty, war, nuclear weapons, womens rights, civil rights, the Vietnam war. These are the influences of this music. This art. This time. It is not only the music......and the words----it IS the words---the meaning..... Behind almost all of it---is a yearning for a peaceful, loving humanity. And yearning for that world. That is what----this explosion of art is about. I was lucky to have lived thru most of it. You ----are lucky enough to hear it--while some of its originators are still with us. It is not only the art---but the meaning.....behind it. The yearning for peace. John Lennon........perhaps the pinnacle of this art---perhaps.....with Imagine....and with Give peace a Chance---and others.....created something for all time. As did beethoven....His ninth....and his moon light Sonata. Good night.

Love the sax. The instrumentation is so evocative of long, boring, weary days on the road. And then, at the end, psyching oneself up to do it all again.
The Metallica version is a much more guitar heavy interpretation. And the tone is angrier and more exciting. It’s a good cover.
The slow cymbal, the repetitive rhythm, and the ‘echo from the amplifiers’ are all in service of Bob’s vision for the song. He’s so cinematic.
This was written in 1972 before stardom. Live Bullet was 1976 and was a breakthrough for him.
Daniel, this is one only a few videos for Seger. It is worth watching. It was made at least 15 years after the recording, and its ‘current’ Bob on keyboard with b&w clips of him in concert in the 70’s. It’s an excellent video.

It's a great song. I've known a few solo artists/duets/bands that have covered it. As a motorcyclist I always connected with the lyric 'one note song.' Bike in fifth gear. Leaning into the throttle. And a G singing in my helmetted head. My mind could use that to sing along. It was often an Eagles song.

"Chills." Perfect comment to end the song. The same sort of chills I felt the very first time I heard Bob Seger sing his song Night Moves, at about the same age you are right now. From what I understand this song is about the life of a rock star, a rock star having long hair which is why they wonder is that a woman or a man. That life is not all that it is cracked up to be. It also tells how the long bus rides from town to town where his concerts are being held are long and hard to deal with at times. This song is just raw reality for what most of us see as a completely glamorous and dreamlike career. It is a simple song with a heavy subject. His voice is amazing and so is his band. Not too many rock stars have written songs about the reality of the road. Great song, glad that you liked it.
