    as a machinist that doesn't make or collect knives, I would ask you to consider hours and months John put in refining the design and creating the 'action' that you love about it. It's that devotion and his willingness to be open about his process that accounts for it's increased value. great review!

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Surely the design and iteration aspect of development is quite important and rigorous! I tried to walk back on my comments about CNC being perhaps "worth less" - it's just that I personally value time used for dedicated hand-work vs. time spent doing CNC related things. That's in no way meant to denounce the value of CNC - coding and designing in 3D is hard shit and takes serious skills. I just like being able to tell friends and family something was made by hand. Grimsmo makes a great knife. Thanks for stopping by!

    The best commercial this knife got was recently on Grimsmo's YT was the one from the archaeologist. He beat that knife into submission, yet, it retained its use quite well. Guy literally digs holes in the ground with it.

    Can’t believe the hype around this knife. It’s ugly as hell. Has a recurve on an already weird blade shape, why do people hate on recurves but it’s ok on the norseman.
    Ya I give it that it’s smooth but it’s because of that tip heavy blade.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love recurves, just saying

    • @sinjon
      @sinjon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. It drops shut against gravity because the blade is so damn heavy. I have Zero Tolerance knives that cost a fraction of the Norseman that drop shut. It’s not that rare, it just means it’s tuned well.

  • @crookmcstealie

    I enjoyed the video and I understand the desire to buy a knife that's probably too expensive, I literally have a sandrin monza in my pocket right now, but when I hear someone say that their $700 knife won't cut a piece of rope but it's their fault I feel like it's one of those "victim blaming themselves" situations. One of the main symptoms of PTSD is self-blame, I just learned that on Google, there are numbers you can call for help. Good luck to you, I'll check out your channel!

    This is my grail knife but I'd never pay more then retail for one. Aren't they still making them? Why are people paying that much for them?

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They do still make them but it's incredibly hard to get. They are currently filling Rask pre-orders, and they have a "maker's choice" lottery for new Norsemans. So basically you sign up on a list, and if they draw your name, they present an already made knife, and you can accept or decline the opportunity to buy it for maker's price. It's worth noting that Grimsmo has increased their prices to be more in line with secondary now. You can no longer snag a Grimsmo for $600-$700 like before (at least based on their last listings). They're closer to $900 for base. At this point, I think there's better "grails" out there for people. Grimsmo had their shining moment, but they'll have to make another stand out offering in the future, otherwise other makers will overtake them. Holt BladeWorks anyone?

    • @SnwBrdFrvr
      @SnwBrdFrvr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tovarish Works ya, I'm a user not a collector. I can't afford to use a $1000 knife. $700 Is pushing it. Guess I'll stick to my Striders until the bubble pops, if it does.

  • @WillEDC
    @WillEDC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Problem with the Norseman is that you get the blade to bounce out because it drops too fast and weak detent? I can see it in your video and heard about the problem.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is very accurate and a big reason why the 'action' craze has tapered back to "smooth" vs. "ultra fast"

  • @oldschool1993

    What's the purpose of this thing- there is nothing it can do that a 5.00 utility knife won't do. So- you go to the airport- you can't take it with you- so you put it in your luggage and some guy steals it. Unlike your Rolex or your rapper gold chains that people can see, this thing needs to be removed from your pocket and opened in order to puff out your chest in pride and that may find you in cuffs.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    First of all thank you for testing this knife. It was great to see not so great sides of Norsemen. I think calling it a “bubble” knife could not be more accurate. Anyway, it would be great to have other knives (high end spyderco, benchmades etc) to go through the same tests to give viewers some prospective.

    Lol it can't cut rope because it has a moronic giant recurve in it. The Norseman is the most ridiculous, over-hyped knife to date. Yes, please, give me a pocket knife that doesn't have the ability to cut material flat on a surface. Hard pass.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would mention that very few *flippers* are capable of cutting on a flat surface. The tab or your hand will make contact before the straight edge of the blade would.

    • @knownaigm
      @knownaigm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My Spyderco Southard cuts on a flat surface like a dream, as does my Leek and my ZT 0561. Some of them may not cut dead flat with the handle down but I certainly don't have to tip the knife 90 degrees to cut with some odd spatula shaped area of the knife tip.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For sure man. I don't consider any of those competitors to a Norseman. Not exactly a comparison :P

      Right...but, that's like saying a Lambo makes for a bad daily driver and so you'd rather own a Camry. Like, you're technically right, the Camry has better storage, better gas mileage, more headroom, more seats, and a softer suspension, but at that rate, you've completely missed the point of the Lambo. People don't fork over $1k+ for customs because they want the ultimate cutting tool. Everyone knows that passed something ~$250 you can't get a better "knife" as a tool. People are looking for something special, something unique.

    Beautiful knife I know they do some of the highest quality work in the industry but what I I can't understand is who thought it was a good idea giving the knife that impractical ridiculous blade shape? I mean it's not even aesthetically pleasing to look at. Bad move for an otherwise good looking knife.

    • @Mr_Tovarish
      @Mr_Tovarish  ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, at this point the design is over half a decade old. I think when they came on the scene, it made more sense to have something “shocking” to get people’s attention. They quickly came in with the Rask as a more traditional shaped option for the market
