- It's the 27th July, and it's a rainy day but Geoff & Vicki don't care - because today they're on one of the finest train journeys in the world - the Settle & Carlisle Railway. The route takes them over hill and under dale, including the highest station in England, and the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct.

I knew Ruswarp and his owner - Graham Nuttall - I was on many walks with them both. Graham was a quiet man with a great sense of humour when you got to know him. I was very saddened when I heard about his death and have patted Ruswarp's statue every time I've been to Garsdale, which hasn't been as often as I'd have liked
The video ends at 14:49, which is the time on a weekday that a Carlisle train leaves Leeds!
I can't think of anything more British than a dog signing a petition about a railway line.

Imagine not knowing of the existence of the Ribblehead viaduct. You are also a railway fan. Then you are making a walk along the Dales Way. Walking along, wondering why the ground is so squishy, marveling at the Roman roads. Then out of nowhere the Ribblehead comes into view. So remarkable. So unexpected. So beautiful. Your video, with the great pictures and piano music brought back that once in a lifetime event. It is so sad that so many workers lost their lives building such a beautiful practical construction. It is forever in my memory. Thank you for the visit.
One of my favourite train journeys ever was Leeds to Carlisle, then from Carlisle round the Coast line to Lancaster and then Lancaster back to Leeds... Wonderful train day.
How about Carlisle to Newcastle and then Newcastle to Leeds😂

Despite the good old British summer, the drone shots still looked amazing, what a brilliant piece of engineering that viaduct is.
The usual Yorkshireman reply to why Dent station is so far from the village is “ ’appen they wanted it near t’railway"
Do you remember in the All Creatures Great and Small series, Mrs Pumphrey had a long-suffering gardener who was always being prevailed upon to pander to Tricki Woo's fads. He usually replied with a well-chosen, weary, laconic put-down.
Well “ ’appen they wanted it near t’railway" is just the sort of thing I can imagine him saying :-)

Part of the local accent in areas of NW England. My grandma says it like that :)
But double o does make an ooo sound. It's the rest of the country that's wrong. Scousers and Teessiders also say oooo.

you'll enjoy Glasgow Geoff. Largest and busiest suburban network outside of London, plenty of disused stations and tunnels under the city, particularly Glasgow Cross, Glasgow Green and Botanic Gardens. The Glasgow Subway is well known for being the third oldest metro in the world, but our two national rail lines which run east-west in cut and cover tunnels both predate the Subway, so plenty to explore!

One of the best videos so far. When the line was closed for engineering work a few years ago there was a weekend where the public could walk across Ribblehead Viaduct. Apparently the Saturday was glorious sunshine, but unfortunately I'd chosen the Sunday which was as wet as your visit. It was still an amazing experience, despite getting soaked. I really need to try and cross it on a train sometime!

I first rode the Settle & Carlisle in 1987 while it was under threat of closure. There were railtours galore the following year with loads of people wanting to ride the line before it closed. Now, some 30 years later, thank God it didn't!!
I REMEMBER IN THE EARLY 1990'S MYSELF AND MY DAD STAYED OVERNIGHT IN CARLISLE THE HOTEL NEAR THE STATION
THE NEXT DAY WENT ON A SPECIAL TRAIN HAULED BY 2 CLASS 40S SET OFF FROM GLASGOW TO LEEDS VIA SETTLE TO CARLISLE IN THE SUMMER BRILLIANT

You missed Blea Moor tunnel by leaving the train at Ribblehead and rejoining at Dent! Shame, as it is another fantastic feat of engineering at well over a mile long. Lovely to see the viaduct from the ground though :)
That lovely, cheerful Appleby station is quite a contrast to the station in the last episode that had garbage all over the place and Geoff said it could use some tidying up.

Fully agree with Geoff's comment that it was better that they got to Ribblehead Viaduct in very bad weather. Think it made it more apparent what a magnificent feat of engineering it was and what a huge undertaking to construct in what must have been the most difficult conditions.

Which makes it all that much worse that they're in the final stages of All the Stations. I so look forward to these videos. I hate to think of the series coming to an end.
When I travelled on the Settle and Carlisle in 2015, I had an audio commentary of the route. It lagged relatively to the progress of the train. For example the train would pass through a closed station and the commentary would say, "we're now passing through..." about a minute later. Not a criticism, but it was noteworthy. If anything it made me laugh.

Superb video - wonderful photography and editing. As beautiful as it is poignant. When I read the history of the Settle and Carlisle line, I found it very moving and always imagined the navvies working in the rain - so the weather was very appropriate. This video is going into my "Best of TH-cam" videos...and I'm off to run a train down the line in Train Simulator!

A really great set of stations in stunning countryside - you can't beat rain soaked hillsides (as long as you're dressed for it!)
I've been wanting to do this line for ages, and after seeing yous posting it all on instagram the other week I finally booked my trip on it for this Wednesday! Even more excited now after seeing this :). Also, you are right Geoff, when you say Scotland will beat them all!

Excellent video. This is one of the few lines in your series that I had heard of, having a book about it here, showing steam locomotives pulling the trains. The Ribblehead viaduct is amazing, and I always got a kick out of that name for some reason. Poor doggie....so loyal, as they always are.

Got on the train at Garsdale. A Red squirrel was running across the tracks in front of us while we were waiting for the train.
It was a very warm day the train was packed & very stuffy, but somehow it didn't matter as the sheer delight of the experience will be the only thing I'll remember.

Yet another route to add to my wish list. Been to the viaduct before by car but never travelled over it. Going to have to do that now - beautiful line and well worth a visit.
The first time I ever did the Settle and Carlisle they were preparing for the homebase advert they did the other year. Having known nothing about it I was very confused when I got off the train and found myself getting off the train onto some decking and had to walk through a number of kitchens and a maze of sofas to make it to my connecting train! It was rather lovely though, I feel they should have kept it all :p
I remember that advert. Until today wasn't sure if it was filmed at Carlisle or Glasgow Central. With the current state of the Citadel Station, I wouldn't be surprised if Network Rail were cashing some of their Homebase vouchers.

Loved it, best yet! Pity it was raining at Horton, you missed the magnificent Pen-Y-Ghent dominating the landscape. The BBC should take note, your videos are far better than the dry, dreary Michael Portillo series.

Yes fair point, no question that MP has done an awful lot for the railways. But in terms of entertaining TV... no contest.
VVellieMan Paul Johnson was talking about the fact that, when he was a transport minister in the 1980s, Portillo saved the line from closure.
Yes I know about his role in saving the S-C line. But I'm talking about a railway based travelogue programme in 2017 - and I would rather watch Geoff and Vicki's rather than Michael's.
Just had a thought, I'm trying to imagine Mr Portillo excitedly running along a platform exclaiming "It's the cutest train I've ever seen!!" No, I just can't picture that. 😃

Brilliant video! Many thanks you two. I've been travelling the Settle since 1967 and as far as I'm concerned the best line in the UK.
As you say it's much better when it's raining especially when walking over Arten Gill viaduct or to the southern portal of Blea Moor.
I should add that was over 40 years ago, I don't think it would be allowed now.

Absolutely delightful video again; a beautiful line which I did on Cup Final Day in May, which I would do again in a heartbeat. Also sure that there are Caves in and around Ribblehead, as I am too sure that's where I did part of NCS almost 3 years back - unsurprisingly in the good old British Rain too! Excited for the finale in a few weeks
I knew Dan was in the Captain’s Seat from the first scene (!!) Bravo (!!) Sensitive and Respectful to the grandeur of Britain / rolled in undercurrent audio and cut perfectly for the tribute to “Ruswarp the Faithful” you are talented my friend - Moving Story. Vicki’s line “My feet are Wet” best spontaneous of the show, sum total of the adventure … truly connecting. Each episode tops the last (!!) Spectacular (!!) people need to take the time to see for themselves

The best video you've done so far, and I'll say it now - probably the best of the series. Great photography, great people, great stories, and some drama along the way. You really can't ask for more.
If I ever make it to the UK, I'll go there and make my own S&C video, but make it twice as long, because I'm certain there's more to see and do than the brief glimpse you gave us.
Also, it's much better in the rain. More light shift, more cloud patterns, more drama - just more!

It's amazing to think that people lost their lives to let you make a train journey from Leeds to Scotland.
Ribblehead in the rain. It was like that when I visited. The viaduct is stunning whatever the weather. Looking at going back up that line again this year and taking the time to get off and explore all the stations and their surroundings like maybe Pen-y-ghent and the visitors centre at Ribblehead itself. And to also schedule a return visit to The Station Inn!
I was lucky to see that viaduct when my friend took me there a few years ago. It's amazing on video, but to see it in real life is something else.
I live in Cumbria and I go to see steam run on the S&C often. :)
The Midland Railway only proposed the line as a ruse to persuade the LNWR to allow them to run trains over LNWR lines from Ingleton to Carlisle, but Parliament said "you got an act of Parliament to build the line so you're bloody well going to build it."

By the way, there's an interesting Time Team episode, in which they dig up a Navvy camp on the Risehill tunnel on the Settle to Carlisle line. If you're curious about navvys, episode 5 of season 16 is worth a look!

Could've mentioned the landslip repair at Edens Brows where they've pretty much built a bridge and sunk it into the land. That is probably as impressive as the Ribblehead Viaduct.

A late post, Helifeild has a great Victorian style canopy and the tea room does sausage muffins the size of a dustbin lid. Yes the weather can be adversely but on a blue summers day it's breath taking the scenery.
Well I certainly think you did the line justice. Getting off at Ribblehead the things that hits you most is once the train has departed it is so silent. All around the most stunning scenery. There is something special about getting off a train somewhere so remote like that. At the same time although it can be very bleak the stations all feel so homely as they are so well kept. Most stations also have a pub nearby, even Ribblehead.
jongcombe Ribblehead was even more remote in the late 80s/early 90s when it had no northbound plstform!
Another brilliant video guys, keeping all us regular viewers hooked. I wonder if it might be possible for you to do a behind the scenes video once you've finished. I'd love to know how you piece each video together so skillfully and get that stunning drone footage.
If you check Geoff's channel (or maybe even ATS extras?) there is a behind the scenes that's all about editing these, or maybe generally editing, but it's along the lines of what you're after. :-) Martin is the drone man/owner/operator... he's terrific!

From what I remember when the footbridge at Guiseley was removed to allow for electrification it was moved to Appleby.
I noticed some of the stations in this video had the ending "by" or in an earlier video "kirk".
According to history those places do have scandinavian heritage all the way back to the wiking time 1000 years ago. It is actually villages we scandinavians as me founded.
By is scandinavian and means in english village.
Kirk means in english church.
Nice to see my ancestors, the wikings, still have an impact on the brittish society 1000 years later. :D
And in York, many of the street names end -gate which I believe was "Viking" (Danish? Swedish? Norwegian?) for "street". What most people would call a gate (ie an archway in the city wall with a door that could be locked at night) is called a "bar" in York. Hence the saying "York: where the streets are called 'gates', the gates are called 'bars' and the bars are called 'pubs'". The best "-gate" name is "Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate".

In Scandinavian the English word road means gata. Gate are simmular to gata and some older peoples here do say gate. The letter E have turned into an A.
Bar in Scandinavian means either pub or carried or nude, depending on it's use.

That path you are standing on looking at the Ribblehead viadcut is part of the Yorkshire three peaks. If you continue up it you follow the railway tracks as they head into the dent tunnel and then you continue on to the summit of whernside.
Geoff/Vicki -Today's video came through just as I was leaving to catch the train from Preston to Carlisle - via Clitheroe and Settle (See your own recommendation on the Blackpool to Burnley video). Thanks for the recommendation. Now I just need to work out how to download my photo's from my phone to my PC so I can put them on my Facebook page.
