In retrospect, while the 90s created a great batch of sitcoms, taken as a whole they look like a sleepwalk of optimism. One aspect of the sitcom is that the characters must all be liberated from obligation outside the scope of the show. The 90s friends shows featured good pay and leisure time. The post 9/11 workplace sitcom gets darker when you realize that culture was catching up to the fact that the leisure class was shrinking. These sitcoms sought liberation in the meaning of workplace relationships, since leisure was shrinking for the gainfully employed. The other strain of post 9/11 sitcom features rather poor people who may not have much except for time.
Working class sitcoms have always been a rarity and those that did exist were rarely "smart" comedies, I think of stuff like Frasier and NewsRadio and they were basically goofing around in their white collar jobs all day but they were actually more about work than most sitcoms before and afterwards. If you think about the stuff that was mostly relevant directly post 9/11 it was often around before 9/11, from cartoons like King of the Hill or The Simpsons, what else was there that King of Queens show?
I love that the characters seem to be slowly realizing that they're on a web series and that their fates are fixed

You guys should do an After Hours on why every book series set in a dystopian universe is essentially the same.
The same, how? I mean they are diffrent stories set in dystopian worlds. The dystopian part will always be the same, that's how term definitions work. Now irregardless of the story, at some point the protagonist will at least attempt to overthrow, or break free from his/her oppressors. I don't think dystopia can be just a casual background setting. Now, if you wanted to point out that most agrarian societies portrayed in cenima turn out to be truly dystopic I could see that as a very interesting episode. Or....or, the fact that people can't accept agraria and will imagine conflict and struggle, and in some cases create it, just to cope.
One of the most impactful things about 9/11, to me (then a HS sophomore) was that most victims died at work, with their coworkers (with notable exceptions, like the plane passengers.) What followed, culturally, was an emphasis on banding together and appreciating the simple things. Perhaps this is a subtle reason why workplace comedies became so popular. As I wrote in my blog 15 years later:
"It’s hard to explain how that idea impacts me, but I suppose one way is that I believe work is an important part of one’s life, and if it’s bad, you should look for something else, because life could be short. And that you might die next to your coworkers (or they might save your life), and you should always honor them as fellow people. Life includes work and work includes YOU - you shouldn’t just have to turn in your personality and your happiness for 8 hours a day and become a robot. Perhaps this idea, subconscious or not, shaped how my generation now approaches their careers."

It's unrealistic to think life is short when living in a country who's government has no regrets or regards for human life. This internal attacked & false flag was the ultimate realization that popped the bubble metaphorically speaking to all Americans. Everyone who felt safe & everyone in denial who loves their country had to come to terms with such an outrageous crime against themselves & their countries freedoms. Loved ones, strangers & hero's that were there that day paid the ultimate price while the Republican & Liberal party did everything in their power to prevent justice & transparency. Well, duh. It eventually came back around, with a show that was intentionally more aware of reality and less comforting than the previous shows in its genre.
True but it doesn't disprove what they're saying. Nobody said the change needed to be permanent. It's like fish scattering when they're disturbed but will return to the same spot once things calmed down.
I feel that HIMYM was a Friends for the post 9/11 generations. It was much more contemporary in it's humour.

Ella Mitchell I know and they also talk about the single camera setup which has been used in plenty of sitcoms for years. It was starting to become popular again around 2 years before 9/11. Besides that, they don't mention Will And Grace.

False, as of 2015 survey white people make up 73,3% of American citizens. Black people are on the second place making up 12,6%. Obviously, percentages will change from state to state and New York for example has different white/non-white ratio. Still, ethnic groups tend to keep together so same race groups are more common than mixed race ones, so shows with all white cast aren't exactly that unrealistic.
Scrubs is obviously in Southern California, probably near San Diego. From the states that they mention as out of state, we can rule out Texas and Florida, so what other state has such easy access to a beach and Sea World, and has a large enough Hispanic population that Carla is shocked and a little insulted that Eliot doesn't speak any Spanish? Has to be California, and since Sea World is in San Diego and Eliot never complains about the commute when she dates Sean who works there, boom. Has to be within 50 miles of San Diego. Other evidence: Eliot is afraid to admit she's Republican because of the heavily Democratic population, the ocean is cold, therefore must be the Pacific, not the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico, they make a road trip to Tacoma, Washington and get there within a day. The exact time is never specified, but according to Google, San Diego to Tacoma is a 19-hour drive, so doable in one day if you drive through the night, as they do.
If you ever mention Scrubs in an episode, you can bet your hat I will leave a comment. I have watched and rewatched that show so many times I probably know it better than some of the people that worked on it.

Scrubs is an unbelievable show. A lot funnier than most comedies, more accurately depicts the medical profession than most medical dramas, better drama and characters than a primetime soap opera, to me it seems like the only shows that compete with Scrubs are shows that don't compete with it directly, like Twin Peaks.
They should do an After Hours episode of how *Jersey Shore* managed to get so popular and how the formula of "reality TV" manipulating audiences has become such a science. It could be an intriguing topic just ripe for theories & jokes.
This series is what got me into videos on Cracked.
In a way it did. When I first watched an episode, I didn't like it at all. So, I started digging around to see what the articles were like. That led me to AoC, which led me back to After Hours. Then I found out that I was probably in a pissy mood when I watched my first episode and my opinion was affected by that mood.

Personally, I remember being relieved that Friends and other shows in New York City avoided the topic of 9/11. It was (rightly) everywhere. News and other media were constant reminders that an attack could happen anywhere at any moment. Entertainment was a powerful method for viewers to escape the reminder of how vulnerable the United States suddenly felt and providers were happy to oblige its audience. It seems tragic in hindsight, but at the time it was a relief.

The shift from New York City to small towns in fiction has less to do with 9/11 than the fact that 95% of America lives in suburbs or small towns where you never meet people and nothing really happens ever. Making the kinds of friendships featured in Friends and Seinfeld is only possible in cities like New York. In suburban America, it is impossible to meet people, and you are forced to make friends with your coworkers, the only humans with whom you interact. Sometimes you might have friends you know from high school. And that's it. No crowds, no chance encounters, no background characters. Nowhere to go on Friday evenings. Just your workplace, your home, and the isolated drive between the two of them. This post-9/11 shift is indicative of America's urban planning crisis.

What about wings?... No 9/11 definitely changed the programming, Stations have always been cautious with their programming choices in relation to recent events, especially tragedies...
In fact media in general is always like that, like how they quickly took the two towers web scene out of Spider-man...usually it involves postponing though...
I have a theory that a long-term sitcom about a bunch of friends is doomed to eventually get a little creepy, because your friends are people you generally *choose* to be with. So to have consistent conflict with characters in a show like that would eventually allude to the show being about dysfunctional relationships, which is why it's a common joke for a long-running sitcom to have a therapist character that reveals how crazy everyone is. This joke usually occurs later on in the show, and is a good way of addressing the flaws yet emphasizing why they still choose to hang out.
But when it comes to workplace environments, as stated by everyone everywhere including this video, you are forced to maintain relationships with the people around you. This leads to natural conflict. In Scrubs, JD and Cox are a good example of this. Or Cox and Kelso. It's more entertaining to have a cast of characters that may hate each other for the majority of the show. But JD and Turk stands as an example of how they can have their cake and eat it, too, since they can still maintain a "great group of friends" dynamic for more stories.
I'd argue the workplace sitcoms are just as dysfunctional, maybe moreso. A group of friends is people hanging out together because they want to, which is idealized but also strained by the demands of drama to provide story. Normal or healthy equals boring, so by definition if something is either of those, it takes place off-screen. E.g. Ross in Friends is meant to be a good father, hence most of his relationship with Ben must be healthy, normal and boring from an audience perspective.
But in a workplace, if someone stays in the same place over a long period it is just stagnant. The characters aren't advancing their careers as within that workplace there are limited opportunities to challenge themselves or advance, and yet they're still prone to still become incestuous and creepy in how the characters interact and their history builds up. E.g. Their love lives and private lives which I'm sure most people would want to keep separate become completely tied to their work and their colleagues.
Even worse, it's kind of dystopian in how reliant the majority of the characters are and how they are stuck there, and how work seems to dominate even their private lives, yet this is rarely critiqued and instead framed positively. You could argue how much this applies to different workplace settings, but even in better off professions it comes across as stagnant, incestuous and creepy.
Finally! I can't go this long without my "After hours" fix. I like how Daniel is a little jealous of Michael and Soren's secret bromance

Um, actually Scrubs didn't take place in the middle of America. It was very clear throughout the series that it took place in Los Angeles, likely somewhere in the San Fernando valley.

A short lived series that addressed NYC in post 9/11, three year after, was when Ted Danson's character, Dr. Becker, spent his whole day helping a lady get to ground zero in the episode titled "Subway Story." I defy anyone to not tear up, watching it from start to finish... :'(

Scrubs takes place in Washington state, or at the very least in the Pacific Northwest, Zach Braff's character goes swimming in one episode in the ocean off the coast in an area that's known for late winter/early spring swimming despite the fact that the water is practically freezing.

And those are just modern shows. Some of the best 50s and 60s shows have laugh tracks. Hogan’s Heroes, Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy. And don’t forget kid’s shows, especially from the 90s, like Boy Meets World, or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

The TV show Friends not handling 9/11 is actually true. In fact, not only did the TV show change the New York skyline scene transitions due to the missing twin towers, there was an entire portion of a Friends episode cut and changed due to the terrorist sensitivity at that time. It's the episode where Chandler and Monica are about to go on their honeymoon, but they don't get bumped to first class like the couple in front of them and keep getting snipped by them. Originally, the Bings were supposed to get those 1st class seat upgrades but Chandler made a bomb joke that red-flagged a ton of security guards and prevented them from boarding their flight. The young married couple before them was created to work around the episode rewrite. You can find the original deleted scene online on TH-cam.

To be fair Friends did show some effect from 9/11, but not directly referenced. Such as the last episode of season 10, when Rachel is on the plane and the man next to her gets extremely paranoid just from her saying Phoebe “had a feeling” something was wrong with The plane. That caused an evacuation of the plane because of the paranoia somewhat caused by 9/11. That’s how I saw it anyhow.
Jake Donavan I never thought of it. Maybe it was an indirect implication. I always thought that they should have (at least) mention in one episode the unfortunate events of 9/11, but that would also mean bending the comedy effect. After all it's a sitcom. But with not talking about 9/11, it's been destroyed the real aspect.
