    everyone always suggests super understable drivers for beginners, but as a beginner, nothing is more frustrating to me than when my drive just turns and never comes back. i get much more enjoyment out of throwing slower overstable discs like a harp, emac truth, or my raptor

    • @erakfishfishfish
      @erakfishfishfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That suggests you started with different (and better) habits than most beginners. Case in point: I was an Ultimate player before disc golf, so I’m naturally more comfortable throwing hyzer shots. I needed understable discs to learn how to throw straight.

    I have about 400ft of power and I still throw a very stiff z thrasher after more than 2 years of use, used it as a beginner and I still use it in big tailwind or uphill situations.

    I bought Avenger SS like 2 weeks ago and I have to say, it flies so far, considered in my skills, and it teally works out for me. If you are a beginner who wants to improve skills of the game, buy Avenger SS. It is surely amazing option.

    great list - A 159g Sapphire in gold line plastic was my first 300ft disc and I still bag a 172g gold line one from the trilogy challenge pack for tailwind drives. The MVP Wave in neutron plastic is also still in the bag when I'm not throwing into headwind - if there is any headwind I swap it out for a Streamline Trace in plasma plastic. If I had to pick Discraft, I'd go with the Hades. I top out at about 350ft, but I think that's okay for a 56 year old still relatively newly addicted to disc golf :)

    • @GolfInHawaii69
      @GolfInHawaii69 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dang that's crazy good distance for a 56 yr old that's new to disc golf. I've been disc'ing for about 3 months on and off and I can barely even reach 250ft with a driver. Which is ironic bc I can drive the golf ball 350 yards in normal golf if I swing out of my shoes with good contact, with an average of 320-330. But i reckon it's all about technique and practice just like normal golf. So hopefully I'll be reaching that 300ft range soon.

    • @GolfInHawaii69
      @GolfInHawaii69 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And for some reason I cannot throw a distance driver well unless it's super understandable like a mamba. I bought an opto sapphire recently and it just fades left even if I put tons of anny. I watch woman play disc golf online that throw 150ft and can still throw an overstable distance driver with a full s line flight.

  • @erakfishfishfish
    @erakfishfishfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would recommend low speed, high glide, very understable drivers, like the confusingly-named Lat 64 Gold Diamond or the Westside Underworld.
    (The Diamond is also an amazing driver at altitudes >6000ft/1800m)

    I started with an avenger ss and now 2 years later I still have 3 in my bag. Even with the arm speed to get a destroyer out to 450, this is the best hyper flip out of the box discs on the planet

  • @gardenstateflatlandb
    @gardenstateflatlandb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As an adult beginner, I've found these 3, so far, to be fairly beginner friendly.
    I do however have slightly better arm speed than most beginners, possibly due to having a baseball, and other throwing related sports, background.
    1-Discraft Nuke SS.
    13 speed yes, but doesn't need a ton of power for a good straight shot with a little fade.
    2-Discraft Heat.
    More understable and gives you a nice S curve or straight line with moderate power.
    3-Streamline Neutron Trace.
    Only threw this once, but instantly fell in love. Glides so nice and doesn't require a ton of power either. Very straight flying disc. Will def be buying one to bag.
    Idk what my beginner status means to anyone, but I am a beginner, and this is about beginner friendly discs.
    Your results may vary from my own.
    I've only field thrown about 3 times for an hour each time, and have only played 2 local courses once each.
    I'd say that's beginner.
    1st time throwing, nothing went right.
    2nd time throwing, I was starting to work out some bugs I noticed I was doing wrong from my 1st time out. I recorded myself on a few shots and played it back in slow motion. You can learn a lot about yourself by doing that. I highly suggest doing so cuz it helped me out a ton.
    3rd time throwing, and having worked out many bugs in my form, I went from throwing my putters 130-150 to 200' consistently. Midranges from 150-175 to 240-250' consistently. Drivers from 200-240 to 300' consistently.
    Still not super accurate tho, these are just measured distances. Most were fairly on target tho.
    All that added distance simply by analyzing my form and correcting some things I was doing wrong, in particular "rounding" on backhands, and timing being off.
    The backhand goes against everything I'd ever learned about throwing. Almost doesn't seem like it should work like it does, but it does. What the experienced players say about form makes all the difference. If you want to get better, listen to them. Scott Stokely, Foundation Disc Golf, and Philo, to name a few, vids helped me see what I was doing wrong and correct it. Form and timing. Timing is sooo important too. Everything has to go together like clockwork. One missed second can make all the difference in how far your discs go, and at what point you release them.
    Try different grips too. What works for most, doesn't always work for you.
    I've modified my backhand from the traditional 4 fingered power grip, to a 3 finger and I'm getting much smoother release and better snap. There are no set rules how to grip. Start with what they say you should do, and experiment from there if that doesn't feel right in your hands. Not everyone's fingers bend the same way.
    Also had to modify the orientation in my hand. They say line the disc up with the crease in your palm, and between pointer and middle fingers. When I was doing that, every disc went nose up. I now line my disc following that crease in the palm to outer edge of my pointer finger, and it puts the disc of a flat plane for my grip. Like I said all hands are not created equal.
    I'm kinda babbling now.
    Just excited about disc golf and sharing some things I've changed up to help my throwing.
    Hope to keep progressing each time out. My goal before winter sets in is to hit 400' on a drive. Wish I had discovered Disc Golf in my youth when I had a cannon for an arm.
    Good luck, and have fun everyone!

    My recommendation for beginners is a pro beast. Sapphire is pretty similar, so that's a great choice!

    • @BenKickert
      @BenKickert 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was a forehand dominate player for years, but have been working on my backhand. A 160g domey beast was the first disc I felt comfortable bombing on backhand. Now it is generally too understable for me, but it is definitely a great disc to start with because it should demonstrate noticeable turn and fade. Its a disc that should always do a nice S-turn if released flat. If you are only getting movement to the right then you are putting too much anhyzer on it. If you are only getting movement to the left then too much hyzer. Granted, it is great for a hyzer flip, but unless you are intentionally doing that, then it is an indicator of a place you can improve your release angle.

    I actually use the champion mamba still for a big high left to right shot as a RHBH player that doesn't throw forehands. Also works well for rollers. And now I'm using it to learn lefty since I don't want to mess up my elbow throwing forehands

  • @bam_mab9190
    @bam_mab9190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Even better players can throw a mamba(as utility) offers a great option for throwing with less power on turning holes. An intermediate player should be able to throw almost a 400' hyzer flip turn without throwing max power or a low ceiling roller. I use it on certain courses for that utility. But yeah, it's a meme when I throw it, the boys get a good laugh

  • @Joah1990
    @Joah1990 ปีที่แล้ว

    Idk if I got a dud from the factory. But my sapphire dumps left harder than every disc I own. I throw a 13 speed shryke that doesn't dump and i get a good fight out of it for a beginner. And sapphire is more understable in terms of flight numbers than a shryke. I've thrown valkryie and a beast, and a destroyer I burrowed from our parks lost and found tree. I put it back when I was done of course. None of them dump like sapphire.
    I swear it is good for nothing but hyzer spikes and ridiculous annhyzer forehand. I used it as training wheels to learn forehand because it always dumps out even from a horrible angle. But now i forehand my shryke pretty well and my sapphire is very close to going in the trash lol

  • @CanadianGunslinger11

    Really consider plastic and weight when it comes to your disc. More stiff/ premium of the disc = more stability. More flexible/ basic the less stability it has.
    Generally Heavier discs equal more stability and lower discs

    The flight numbers on a mamba are an absolute lie. people who actually throw them know they're deceptively stable and ALWAYS come back. The thing a Mamba does the best is if you rip it flat and straight in a tailwind it will stay flat and straight the whole time. don't prejudge the Mamba because of the incorrect numbers.

    Lat64 Bolt better than the Sapphire when it comes to distance driver - the list is irrelevant if the Bolt is not one of your top 5 - easier to throw well for someone with slow arm speed than 4 of the 5 discs you've listed (the Mamba being the exception).

  • @BenKickert

    Who TF recommends a Mamba. I have lots of love for Innova, but that thing is awful. A 150 class Wraith is hella better if you need the 10+ speed, but the Sidewinder, while technically a fairway driver, is GOLD.

      @JoshJackson13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read the comments mamba is the most common used disc here. When you get all your power from full tilt hyzer mamba is perfect. Sidewinder is to glidey it might go 450 trying to throw it 370 mamba dies out i have 3 of each. Any Head wind or thrown flat mamba flips into a roller. Low wind where I live

    • @JoshJackson13
      @JoshJackson13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 930 rated. Any disc you know exactly what is going to do every throw off the tee full distance is key. The pros mistake is when the disc don't turn enough. I know my mamba is going pop up and turn finish softly to the right. Or my new star one finish to the left not as consistent tho might go to far left like your destroyer does.

    • @JoshJackson13
      @JoshJackson13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      150 gram weight destroyer comes out early 1 out 3 times. And any wind controls it more than you do

    • @BenKickert
      @BenKickert 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoshJackson13 Dude... you are way too invested in a discussion about disc preferences. But hey, if you are 930 rated, who am I to argue. Maybe if I am lucky I can get you to sign my 11X PFN Firebird.
      For real though... this whole discussion is super odd. The mamba literally only exists for beginners who want to feel cool using a 10+ speed driver before they have any angle control on their release.
      I am generally the guy who pushes back against elitists who say beginners should only throw putters and mids, but the mamba is a disc that Innova only created because they realized beginners were gonna want a high speed driver well before they had the arm to throw it.
      There is literally no situation where a mamba is better than a Sidewinder for a decently skilled disc golfer. If you can't get the results you have described with a sidewinder then you are doing it wrong. And if you actually have angle control and can get a Mamba to fly straight, why wouldn't you throw a light wraith.

    The correct advice, of course, is that beginners must never use distance drivers.
    It is guaranteed to ruin your form, and prevent you advancing as you should.
    If you have been playing disc golf for less than 4 months, or 40 rounds, then you have absolutely no business throwing any disc above speed 9, and the only effect distance drivers will have on your game is to add extra strokes.
    This video gets 0/10.
