  • Salmon-fishing legend Ally Gowans invented the Ally Shrimp in 1979. It has gone on to be one of the most popular salmon flies in the world, along with another of his creations, the Cascade. In this film, he ties the Ally Shrimp and talks about its history - and how it has affected him.

Yes a wonderful pattern in its colours...Last salmon on the Lune was on the Red.
I'll have a cascade and original ready when I get out on Eden and Tweed this April.
Love tying themand thankyou for your inspiration.
Safe wading to all in 2023 and those first springers!!

I've tied a couple of these after watching Ally's excellent instruction. I have a sneaking suspicion that this fly would interest left coast, winter steelhead in the US. I'm going to dedicate a couple of days during the winter steelhead season, swinging this fly with confidence.

Red Ally and Cascade are my two most successful salmon flies. Thanks Ally!
PS I caught a stunning 15lb April springer on that Tummel beat, from the Greenbank.

after tying your pattern today a slight variant of yours went down to the river for a try,i got there and the river was rushing rather fast for my liking and had a small double shrimp like pattern size ten which was whipping accoss the flow so i decided ill try my newly made rather large ally shrimp what have i got to loose i thaught, after seeing how fast the water was, a heavier fly might be needed i thaught might sink a little faster so tied it onto my line and gave it its first flight and dunking, seemed ok flew nicely and swam a little better than the small size ten the size 5 partridge salar hook which i thaught was overkill was put into service ,i moved up to the next pool and started fishing again and started exploring the pool ,had a few casts not expecting much was casting across and letting it sweep infront of a large tree that had moved down stream a few years back which was to my left looking down stream which was at the end of the sweep, cast a few times hopping that i wouldnt get stuck in the trees roots over a sudden dam i thaught feels like im stuck i pulled againt it to see if it would come free ,it was not stuck in the roots a fish had took it and as soon as it felt me it took off in a second it was in the flow and came up to the surface and a swish of its tail the water erupted next to the tree oh now dont go there i was thinking ive waited for this for months i thaught cant loose it now it started moving faster ive got my drag set and it seems to be fine all i have to do is keep calm keep the tension on using my hand on the rim of the reel,im in control im able to use the reel theres no line around my feet the battle begins ,fish moves upstream and is in the current lovely bend in my rod bump bump as it shakes its head it moves again heading for the tree again and me trying and hoping that it wouldnt go further down if it did it be curtains for me, i managed to turn it so it was pointing up stream hoping my line will hold and the knot was secure all this going through my mind it did a few moves but i kept with it it be only a while before this one will be landed it thrashed a little before calming down near the bank i better get the net ready after finding my net was fastend to by bag by rope and a carabiner i had to try and un clip it and it was not playing ball menwile the fish is under strain and isnt moving much eventualy i managed to get the net open and extended the shaft and got the net wet and ready began to bring it to the net i set it off again a few more evasive moves by the fish and then i saw its now or never head comes up and starts to glide to the net come on i thaught get in the net please, all ended well six mins of adrenallin succcess my fist salmon this year not a big one 5.6lbs but it was a salmon and it was my home tied copy not as good as your tied fly and not quite the same materials but hey it done the buisness ,thanks to you and your video made me a happy chappy and given me some extra confidence in how i have been fishing thanks Ally Gowan made my day well dusk anyway light was fadding it was nearly dark but not that dark as i still was able to do all without a torch well chuffed
