Trust me, the "I see dead people" scene was not the one people were waiting for you to see. It was the twist at the end.
I am old enough to have watched this masterpiece in the theaters when it was live and I remember many people in the theater gasping out loud when his wife drops *his* ring and he looks at his hand and sees he isn't wearing it. The realization hadn't caught up to me yet and I genuinely looked around in confusion about what was going on and then when she let out a breathe of cold air I gasped right along with them along with the other half of the people in my theater who hadn't been hit with the truth yet.
I have rarely ever had another movie experience like that.

The only scary thing about the Sixth Sense is how hard it makes me cry.
Between that scene and the dinner scene in Hereditary, Toni Collette may own two of the greatest acting scenes in horror movie history.

Toni Colette is one of those actors who can do it all, horror, comedies, dramas.
As great as the twist is, behind the ghost plot is a really well-written story about a struggling single mom trying to raise a bullied kid. The scene where Cole comes back from school and the mom makes up a story about getting a promotion and Cole responds with a made-up story about being picked first and scoring the winning run breaks my heart every time, as a very subtle glimpse into how difficult and unhappy their lives really are.
The Babadook is similar in a lot of ways, when you put this film like that -- both are great, of course!
Haley Joel Osmont and Bruce Willis get all the props, but Toni Collette was fantastic in the 'mom role,' too. As was Olivia Williams as the wife.
Yes! That scene is so damn bittersweet and beautifully written. This is such a fantastic movie and that entire focus on them struggling together is probably one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a film. Everyone in this movie was just fantastic

the rewatch is SO good, because you realize NO ONE besides Cole interacts with him, we just didn't notice because he's in the same scene with them and it's played so normal and all the timing is so perfect. Also, the bodies in the hallway HAUNTED ME when i first watched this.
Also on the rewatch, the director drops hints that the doctor is dead. One is everything to deal with ghosts is the color red. From his "safe" tent to the locked door handle. red appears everywhere.

Throughout the movie we learn that the church is 1/2 sanctuaries Cole runs to when scared by the ghosts, the other being the tent in his room. When Malcolm says he has to "transfer" Cole but recants, he find's Cole in the church again.

The beauty of the twist is that it's right there in plain sight the entire time. Malcolm does not interact with anything in the entire movie. Even in the restaurant, when he sits down, the chair doesn't move. During the I See Dead People monologue, the camera is just zooming in on Bruce Willis's face the entire time - he's right in front of us and we don't see it. Absolutely genius.
Agreed. The movie has some really neat rewatch value. One begins to notice all these nagging details. And less-nagging details. The clothing. The color red. Temperature. So many hints that we overlook because our attention is drawn elsewhere.

At the same time, I don't know if it works _without_ the nature of the writing here. As it stands, Malcolm only had to "do things" when the audience watched him. Malcolm existing in this state for months would have had him realize he couldn't interact with anything the whole time. How was he getting his laundry done? Malcolm not wondering why he hasn't eaten in months? "Huh, I've never had to take a shower, or use the bathroom? I haven't had to shave since I got shot. Weird. And now that I think about it, my wife and I haven't had a conversation at all since I got shot derp" "I'm practicing therapy on a child without a license, office, or parental consent?" lmao. It only works if his existence is "moments for the audience", or if everything "off screen" is a dream-like experience for ghost-him (ie: logic doesn't matter) where he's only lucid when talking to the child.
When I first saw this movie, I audibly gasped when the kid said, "They don't know they're dead." which my friend found funny because everyone else reacted to the previous line "I see dead people". But I immediately suspected Bruce Willis was dead in that moment. I wasn't absolutely certain but every scene from that moment on just confirmed it for me. So the big reveal at the end was kind of ruined by my own racing, suspicious mind.

One of the most interesting facts is that Bruce Willis, who is originally left-handed, trained himself to write with his right hand. This was done to ensure that eagle-eyed fans wouldn't notice the absence of a wedding ring on his left hand.

Toni Collette’s acting when she finally understands in the car that there is an afterlife and her son has actually been communing with it is as poignant as it is heartbreaking.
There’s a moment when she starts to process what he’s said. It’s so subtle but in her eyes she focuses and looks up before beginning to get emotional. She’s so talented.

Christ I haven't watched this movie since it was in the theater, i totally didn't even know that Toni was the mother in this flick. She is fantastic in any and everything she does.

The drum roll when you said "but he has been interacting with..." and finally connected the dots was absolutely perfect. I watched your video waiting for your reaction to that exact moment and it didn't disappoint.
As a kid I thought this movie was spooky and loved the twist. As an adult, I cry like a baby! "You were never second. Ever." 😭
14:20 - it's amazing how Cole just tells you the entire plot of the movie. Straight to the camera he lays it all out, blatant as could be, yet most people (including me) still miss it. Brilliant screenwriting.
The Prestige does this too, with Michael Caine telling us from the very beginning that every magic trick has three parts, but we don't want to know; we want to be fooled to enjoy the magic.
He actually got pushback and they wanted to remove it, fearing it would ruin the movie.
A lot of thought went into that scene. IIRC it was originally supposed to be Bruce Willis' face on screen when the line is said. But Willis thought it would give it away and to switch it to the kid.
I first watched this movie at age 12-13 and figured it out at this part. Didn't know it was supposed to be a twist at the end, it just seemed logic from what Cole said. A bit sad I didn't get to have my mind blown by the twist, but the expression on my parents' face when I said it at this scene (they had already seen the movie and knew) was worth it.
The beauty of this movie is that when people talk about "that scene" it is in reference to the ending twist but because everyone quotes the "I see dead people" line, that's the one everyone thinks it's being referred to. It's like a self defense against spoilers all on it's own. It's amazing.
It's like when people think Psycho won't surprise them, because they've heard of the shower scene...
Yeah everyone's so ready to see the first twist coming, they just accept that Bruce is the normal POV character looking in.
I have had this thought for years but haven't been able to fully articulate it.
That's so funny to me, because I was a kid when this movie came out and while people would whisper "I see dead people" the story beat that Bruce Willis was dead at the end of the film was also in a bunch of comedy acts for even a decade after, like people would riff on that so much more than Coles line. So while I understand that with time this has been lost from the cultural zeitgeist, it's fascinating that the idea that sixth sense is a twist movie has stayed, but not its biggest twist and just the little twist in the middle, so it throws people off. Crazy man.
I think a lot of times it comes down to if the new viewer knows that the movie ends in a "twist." If they know that, then they are looking for potential twists, and that sometimes leads them to guess that Bruce Willis is dead for most of the movie.
Haley Joel Osment gives one of the best child performances ever, while director/writer M. Night Shyamalan rewards us with one of the best twists of all time.
Hands down an absolutely phenomenal performance!

Too bad his career as an actor died almost right there.
I actually think Dakota Fanning was brilliant in Spielberg's Taken mini series (not to mention: I am Sam, Man on Fire, Coraline) and her sister Ella was meh as a child actor in The Lost Room (And Super 8) but Dakota got over taken by her sister in the public eye as they grew up into adults.
This movie has incredible rewatchability. Once you know the ending it's worth it to watch again and see that everything works.
Willis *only* talks to Cole. We see him at the hospital and he says stuff when the doctor is talking about Cole, but that's really just a conversation between the doctor and Cole's mother. We also see him sitting in a room with Cole's mother at her home so we assume the two of them have been having a conversation about Cole before he walks in, but really she has been sitting there alone in silence.
When Willis walks into the restaurant and sits down he doesn't move his chair when he sits down, he doesn't move anything on the table, he reaches for the bill but his wife takes it. He's talking to her that whole time and we think she's giving him the silent treatment, but she's just sitting at a table by herself, missing him and mourning their anniversary.
Willis wears the same set of clothes the entire movie - it's the clothes he was wearing when he was shot. It's a little bit of a cheat that he wears a coat when he wasn't wearing that it when he was shot, but you can explain that by saying that he was wearing it that evening and had just taken it off before he was shot.
Plus, the idea that there's no way Cole's mother could afford a child psychologist with her being so poor
@@SamuelBlack84The first time I watched the film I just assumed the city or school had assigned Willis to work with Cole. Like a lawyer doing pro bono work, or being assigned a case by the court. No idea if psychologists actually do this.

It really is masterful. I remember watching it the first time and thinking they made a mistake because I CLEARLY remembered him interacting with his wife at the restaurant and Toni Colette in the apartment. So I went to see it a second time in theaters and was utterly gob-smacked at how brilliantly those scenes were written and filmed. It really was like a completely different movie.

The rare film that you actually get a different experience on a rewatch. The first time I really disliked the wife - how dare she cheat on Willis after he got shot! But on a rewatch I realized that she's a widow and trying to move on, but she still misses him.
I always think about how crazy this must have been from Cole's point-of-view. He spent his entire life terrified of the ghosts he could see, and then one day a ghost doctor shows up and starts psychoanalyzing him and he just has a to roll with it.
He was the first kid friendly ghost. Dead but not angry and in fact kinda blames himself.

When haley joel osmand says "we could pretend we can see each other tomorrow, just for pretend. " it breaks my heart with how well that scene is acted.
The color Red is the big visual clue related to the twist. The kid's sweater is red, the door that can't open has a red doorknob, the wife's pills are red, the baloons are red, his safe space is a red blanket. It's an amazing visual subtext that when you go back and watch it a second time (which I highly, highly recommend) you'll be amazed at how prominent it is.
It's also cool that Bruce Willis wears the same outfit he had on the day he died. They do neat things mixing it up. (The jacket. The coat. Etc.) so that you don't notice. We also don't get to see him from the back with just the shirt on till the very end so we don't know his shirt is covered in blood.
I saw a short documentary on the movie where they put in the color red as any item a spirit interacted with, like the red tent, his red sweater and the red doorknob.
It would take such nerve as a director to hold these things. Because you know the outcome, and it would be so hard to judge what is or isn't a giveaway. I'm sure by the final edit you'd be so worried that the twist isn't a twist at all

Haley Joel Osment actually got a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for THE SIXTH SENSE (as did Toni Collette for Best Supporting Actress, her only nomination to date). The competition for Best Supporting Actor that year was INSANE, with Osment nominated alongside Tom Cruise (MAGNOLIA), Michael Caine (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES), Michael Clarke Duncan (THE GREEN MILE) and Jude Law (THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY). Michael Caine won that year.
over 20 yrs later, the movies costs about 3½-5 times as much, and very mediocre acting skills are needed! I cant remember the best actors/actresses over the last years "blockbusters"
He won and admitted he shouldn’t have beaten out HJO. Said they would share the award. And his acting wasnt all that special in cider house rules, he was just old and the academy figured it might be his last shot and HJO would have many more chances, ala leo dicaprio.
RE: Magnolia. There are two scenes I think of that show what a great actor can do when there is acting to do but no lines to speak. One is with Denzel Washington in Glory. The other is with Tom Cruise in Magnolia. It's fantastic.
The movie also got a Best Picture nomination (when there were only five) and M. Night got nominated for both Original Screenplay and Best Director. It also got a Best Film Editing nomination and the movie won so many other awards. I never understand how these reactors aren't familiar with classics. The Sixth Sense is an iconic classic.

I love how we the audience find out at the exact same time as Bruce that he's dead. Such a brilliant story idea.
Nat, I cry nearly as much as you do but I would never get in front of a camera. You are way braver than I and I'm a 56 year old man. No shame in crying.
I love how well the twist of this film was executed. A truly GREAT twist doesn't reveal new information you didn't have before. A truly great twist just changes the context of what you've already been shown. Every single scene with his wife after he's shot, every single scene with Cole. The first time Cole sees him he asks "Will I see you again?" He meant that in the most literal sense possible. What seemed like a failing marriage you realised was just profound grief. "Happy anniversary." Those words change from scathing to heart-breaking. This film, is fucking PERFECT.

Surprisingly, not one of the reactors I've watched knew the twist ahead of time. It was wonderful to watch.
The movie is 24 years old. I think that a lot of people in their 20s just missed the time when it was in the zeitgeist.
I think we've gone long enough where this movie might have passed people by and it isn't talked about that much anymore.

The scene with him and his mom at the end is one of my favorites of any movie. It hits me everytime.
It's sad to see Bruce's health declining and him retiring but what a legend and legacy to leave behind.
One of Shyamalan's two masterpieces; I hope Natalie watches Unbreakable too (but its gonna be another tear-jerker).

Unbreakable is such a gem of a movie and you can follow it up with Split for another unexpected good movie.
The whole Unbreakable trilogy was excellent.
2 Thoughts.
1. The only really scary thing about the Sixth Sense is how hard it makes me cry.
2. When I realized that Malcolm was dead, my perception of his wife instantly "flipped over" from "cold, distant, and potentially unfaithful" to "grieving".
3. #2 blew me away, because I was already reeling from the conversation in the car about Grandma and the bumblebee pendant.
The one thing that really kinda sucks is, you can never go back and experience that twist the same way ever again. It's a one-shot thing. But watching you go through it was awesome because that's about as close as one can get to having that same feeling of realization as you did the first time.
In 50 First Dates, the character watches this movie every night and it is new to her every time. Great movie.
You can't your right. But in a way you can when you watch it with someone who has never seen it. That is part of the reason I love watching these "first time seeing" movie reactions. Its a way to relive those moments that were really impactful in good movies.

Amazed that this film is old enough that there are more people not knowing the twist at the end. it's so engrained into pop culture. In turn, it makes me feel old.
Right?!? Hard to believe it was so long ago! I saw it in the movie theater opening weekend before it was spoiled for everyone, it was amazing hearing a packed movie theater suddenly realize Malcolm was a ghost the entire time.
I think the scene the people were talking about is the when the ring drops on the floor. That's when all the pieces come together and you realize that Malcomb is dead. We all ignored all the subtle clues throughout the movie.
The second layer to the "I see dead people" scene is that Cole is hinting to Dr. Malcolm that he is dead. "They don't know they're dead," and "They only see what they want to," describes Malcolm to a T. Shyamalan commented that he was nervous about that scene because he's revealing the twist to anybody that's paying close enough attention.
And after all these years, I just realize Cole said another important line which is 'They don't see each other'. That's why Malcolm also doesn't see ghosts even though he is a ghost himself.
It is also referencing us, the viewers. We only see what we want to see even though it's all laid out there in front of us throughout the entire movie.
Halley Joel Osment got a lot of well-deserved praise for his acting in this movie, but for my money Toni Collette stole the show - she was phenomenal as a struggling single mom trying to do everything she could to protect her son, even though she didn't know what she was protecting him from. The scene in the car at the end will never fail to make me tear up - I've watched the movie several times, and reactions to it at least a dozen more, and I cry every time. Just an amazing performance. What a great movie!
The car scene was the best bit of acting I think I have ever seen. Toni Collette tops my list of favorite actors. I think this was her defining scene, not just within the movie but for her career and the industry at large. 10/10
I feel like the success of this movie pushed Shyamalan to chase the high of getting a twist to work so well that he tried to replicate it a bit too much. That having been said, this is a true gem of a movie, it works so well, no one is a weak link in the cast, and the ending is perfect. It’s fantastic to rewatch when you know what you know because there are a dozen little details that turn up. Bruce Willis only wears the clothes he wore in the first scene, chairs he sits in don’t move, he’s not seen actually talking to anyone other than Cole… and it avoids the trap of becoming a somewhat scary movie with a horrific ending. Instead, it’s perhaps the most wholesome, optimistic take on souls with unfinished business ever made. Glad your knees didn’t suffer this time.
I'll say, I loved Split, but that moment in the end when it all loops around. I gasped and jumped out of my seat. My roommate and friends who hadn't seen the other movie were like WTF IS THE BIG DEAL?!
When Natalie thinks the moment we were waiting for was the "I see dead people"... and we're all waiting to see her reaction to finding out Bruce Willis was dead the entire time. 😆
When you said "Is this the moment you all wanted me to watch?" (I'm paraphrasing here) I thought "No, that's not it!" I LOVED your reaction to this movie! I loved that you felt what you felt. I cried at the end too. Well, I cried when the kid is being bullied.
When you go back and watch it for the second time the plot twist is so obvious yet they masked it so well. It really is a great film
My favorite scene is the car scene, by far. It has so many layers to it. I just now realized that Cole can see Grandma because she hasn't moved on yet, because she was upset that she never got to resolve the fight with her daughter (Cole's Mom).
Cole explaining the Sixth Sense to his mom not only brings them closer, but also fixes the gap between mother and daughter AND let's Cole's Grandma rest and move on. Beautiful.
The first time I went into this movie, I expected to be terrified - instead, I found myself blubbing my eyes out :')

I've watched this film so many times over the years and it still makes me cry 🥺 seeing what losing her husband has done to her, how she's struggling to cope with the loss, and see him lost not knowing why things have changed, it's just tragic. He loves her so much the second he realised he'd died, he set her free to continue to live her life 😢 that's real love

Second, I actually auditioned for the role of Cole in Sixth Sense when I was 8 or 9 years old. I didn't get it (obviously) but I spent a whole lot of time bragging about auditioning for a film knowing Bruce Willis was in it. At the time, I didn't know it was a scary movie. I saw it in the theatres, and I was SO SURPRISED! lol
Was that audition a one-time thing, or were you a professional child actor whose name we would recognize?

I'm always shocked that some people still haven't been spoiled to this twist after 24 years. This twist is spoiled/referred to in so many other movies and TV shows.

This is genuinely such a masterpiece of a movie. The writing, directing and acting are flawless.
I'll never forget the phenomenon that this movie was in movie theaters because I worked at a large AMC during it's release. There was no hype or fanfare when it was released but I remember it selling out it's evening showings during it's first weekend run. I wasn't able to see it that first weekend because I worked, I just remembered the theater being surprisingly busy. Finally saw it during the week and it absolutely blew me away. It's an all-time great movie going experience, being scared during the ghost scenes, getting emotional during the final Cole scene, and then that final reveal scene. Then the following weekend rolled around, and there were even more people seeing it and this time you could feel the buzz this time around because now word was spreading like wildfire and there were long lines for each showing (no assigned seating back then), and even during the week, and then the next weekend rolled around and it was still drawing huge crowds. If you're curious at how this movie did, check out historical box office data and you'll see how this movie bucked the usual movie trend of opening big and then gradually declining over the next few weeks. This movie didn't break any box office records on opening weekend but just declined by a small percentage week after week until it was one of the biggest movies of that summer and year.
OMG. I’m old now but it doesn’t seem that long ago we had to arrive an hour early to line up OUTSIDE theaters to get seats. Assigned seating was 110% needed and improved everything. Thinking back, it’s crazy it took so long to happen.
I remember this as well. It was a phenomenon in that no one would spoil things for anyone else. It’s like everyone wanted everyone else to have that moment themselves. It was awesome.

When I first saw the movie when it came out, same thing happened to me. I thought it might’ve been her who died, until I connected the dots and realized it was Bruce Willis’ character that had died.
It was about halfway through when I figured it out. He was only reacting to the kid.
Yeah the fact that she misread the twist at first made it that much better when she realized.
And that drumroll in the editing to her realization was absolutely perfect.
So I'm pretty sure the scene that your patrons said they wanted to see your reaction was not when Cole says "I see dead people" but when Bruce Willis (and the audience) realizes his "situation". It's such a great moment because just before it you feel that the movie is over - Cole told his mother about his ability, he's accepted it and is helping the ghosts, and Malcolm has gone home to reconcile with his wife. It really feels like there's no more plot.
The anniversary dinner... written and performed in such a way that it tells both stories. I'm always in awe of that.
I personally think "The Village" and "Signs" were really good too. Don't really know why they get a bad rep. Both had really good plot twists and great camera work. Go deeper into M. Night's early work rabbit hole.

I agree. LOVED both of those films even though I guessed The Village's twist in the first few minutes (only because it was Shyamalan and I figured there was some twist). DIdn't spoil the rest of the movie for me AT ALL. And Signs was superb once you realize it's not a movie about aliens; it's about faith and family. Shyamalan has had a spotty career but when he's on, he;s ON.

I think the biggest problem with them was they came out after The Sixth Sense and people had high expectations that people felt let down by them.
@@tomnorton8499 Yes, with "The Village" the twists got so obvious I started finding them out right at the beginning (both of them).
Signs gets a bed rep because people deem it illogical in its plot, but are missing that that logic is based on their interpretation and not what we actually are presented with in the movie itself.
I like both movies for their atmosphere and that on their second watch they become different movies.
Like also in Unbreakable, you see the main character following their destiny at the end - it's just not what they (or the audience) think it was at the start.

This is a movie that almost plays as a different movie the second time around. Another one from that time is The Usual Suspects. When you watch it again knowing the ending, so many things play differently.
I hope that she continues to consider how incredibly well put together is that you don't suspect he's dead because of how he interacts with everybody and how well the lines are all written and everything and I think she's too emotional about it to realize that at the moment
When I was a kid, this was the scariest movie I've ever seen. As an adult, it's not scary at all, but it's one of the most emotional films. The ending about grandma makes me misty-eyed. Toni Collette is a legend.

Definitely one of the best reaction movies to watch on here. Anything with a good twist is, but this is the classic one.

You can only experience the twist of this movie once, but watching someone else experience it is incredible as well. If i find out that someone hasn't seen the movie, i love screening it for them just to see how they react!
I read somewhere that the director kept the full lines from each actor in the car scene at the end. The actress didn't know the answer "every day" and Haley Joel didn't know the question do their reactions were spontaneous. This whole movie is brilliant and this reaction was about as entertaining as the first time I saw it.

I've told this story on a number of reactions to this film, but it bears repeating: this movie is why I never went to film school.
I went to college to study acting in the late 2000s. But it was mostly focused on stagecraft and while I absolutely love the stage, I was a lot more or a cinephile than anything. So I had considered going back to school after I graduated to study film. Now, I had already seen some red flags of the kind of snobbery film programs tend to teach, but I was having a decent enough time in my few film electives that I figured it was just certain students. Hoo boy was I naive.
I took a class taught by one of the heads of the film department at my school. This movie was part of the curriculum, and I was excited to see it again. So we watched the film, and after the professor gave her take that we, as a class, were supposed to consider as the lesson for this segment:
"The Sixth Sense is NOT a ghost story. This movie is actually about a mother abusing her child and nobody catching wind of it."
She gave us three points as "proof"
1. "Shyamalan's wife was a doctor who worked with children, and he used a lot of what she told him about abuse victims in the movie" - except this is clearly a red herring. Don't forget, I See Dead People was supposed to be the mid-movie twist that all the trailers spoiled. Shyamalan was setting us up for the swerve and cast only minimal doubt on the mother in a couple of first act scenes to make us doubt the evidence of the spooky stuff until it's in our face.
2. "Ghosts are shown interacting with physical objects. Ghosts can't actually do that." - leaving aside the high unliklihood of the real-life existence of anything that could he described as a ghost, both myself and another student (who was a self-proclaimed occult expert) vehemently told her that yes some ghosts can absolutely interact with physical objects depending on which mythology you're dealing with and it's a very common occurrence in ghost-centric fiction.
3. "Ghost stories are low art. The Sixth Sense is a good movie. Ergo, by definition, The Sixth Sense cannot be a ghost story." - I think the insane troll logic of this statement speaks for itself.
This was the final straw for me. I decided that film academia was not for me, that there was nothing valuable I could learn in a school setting that I couldn't learn working on an actual set, and that I prefer to consume film analysis by people who don't automatically discount genre fiction.
Did you watch Lady in the Water? While not taking a swipe at Film Academics per se, M Knight takes a good swipe at film critics :D

I really liked this movie in film class because the professor focused on the screenplay and the set-up, the color red, etc. and how all the hints paid off. The prof was young, great and really excited about classic film. Academia itself has gone down the tubes but great teachers are still out there.

That film instructor sounds like a crackpot.
First of all, I don't think academics should be insisting on any particular interpretation of a work of art or literature.
About our film essays, one of my film professors said, "It doesn't matter to me whether or not I agree with your interpretation of a movie: if you present it well, you get an A."
Your film professor sounds dictatorial in comparison.
Secondly, her reasoning is flimsy AT BEST. Either she became strangely attached to that interpretation... for some reason... OR perhaps she was presenting it to your class as a way of challenging you to re-examine your perception of the movie.
Natalie's comments at the anniversary dinner is a good sign that we are in for a treat at the end.

I teach a Film Studies class for high school students. This is one of the films that I show the class as part of our unit on thriller films, and it is by far one of the best parts of the school year just because of the students' reactions to this ending.
Every single time I've seen the scene with HJO and Toni Collette in the car, I bawl my eyes out. Even watching others' reactions- I cry. 😭 It's such a great scene.

I'm SO impressed that you managed to go this long without knowing "the surprise". It was a delight to watch you discover it. (Have you seen 'The Crying Game'?) I feel a little bad for M. Night Shyamalan, because he's become 'the twist ending guy'. That's got to be a tough reputation to live up to. It was a great story, but without the staggering talent of this amazing cast, it may not have become the classic it is. I saw this in the theater as well. After seeing the ending, I just **had** to watch it again for all his interactions with his wife. So I stayed in place and waited 10 minutes for the movie to start again. And I saw it again. Back 2 Back.
The original 'Cats' from 1997 was famously the longest running musical on Broadway at the time (over 8100 shows) ... the movie, on the other hand, was 'famous' for a totally different reason

Hey Nat! Im so glad you werent spoiled on the twist before watching this one, it hits really hard when you dont see it coming! Also, you should check out the behind the scenes for this movie. There's soooo much symbolism packed in. The color red is super important, the editing choices etc. Just a really well executed movie.

This is such a great movie. The fantastic cast, the way it's shot, a really well crafted ghost story. It was a blast to see this at the cinema when it was first released too.
Natalie, I suspect when you edited your reaction to the movie, that you also got to rewatch some of the scenes with Bruce and his wife, to see how well it was filmed to not reveal the fact that Bruce was not really there, especially the scene where she had dinner alone on their anniversary and grabbed for the check before Bruce could reach it. Also a fun fact for you, if you get to see it again. Each time there was an interaction, the color red can be seen (clothes, door handle, roses etc.) almost as a tip to know something is coming or about to happen. Really cool addition to the movie.

Came here hoping someone would point out the deliberate choice of red at those moments, and I was not disappointed. For me, it was the red door handle. My grandfather's old Victorian home had door handles like that, but always clear glass. So on my original viewing, I kept staring at it wondering why it was deep red.

I was with Friends in the Theatre and tumbled it when you did, the "Anniversary" dinner .... But I kept quiet! What happens when you come to the realisation, you quickly rerun past scenes in your mind and think .... Yes, That fits, That makes sense, that's Why!
We stayed in the theatre because people told us it was good. But it was really hard as all the sudden cuts and time changes from day to night was so annoying. Then the ending blew us away partly because I realized all those "bad" cuts/editing was actually planned in a really amazingly well done way. 180 degree turn of opinion in a single sitting. Spent time in a coffee shop after the theatre trying to recount all the hints in the movie we missed.
M. Night is famous for his twists. Most aren't that great, but when he manages to pull it off, it feels so great.
Also, I was so worried she was going to figure out the twist before it was revealed.
That moment when she realized that Malcom didn't interact with anyone other than the kid . . . priceless.
32:40 This to me is really why this film has lasting impact. I still watch it and consider it in my top 10. Because even after you know the twist, it still has rewatch value. You can rewatch it to look for clues, but it also becomes a beautiful depiction of love and the pain that comes from losing someone you love.

It’s sad that this movie was spoiled for me long ago before I had the chance to watch it. I was watching a TH-cam video and the one person said “it’s just like the sixth sense where Bruce Willis was dead whole time.” I was not happy.

I always knew the famous "I see dead People" but didn't know the actual twist at the end. Still great nonetheless
My uncle spoiled the movie like 3 hours before I was supposed to go see it at the theaters. I was pissed. I didn't talk to him for like 2 years.
Thank god, when I just started watching Hollywood movies, this was one of the very first movies I watched. This is why I go into watching movies with as little context as possible. A fully immersed experience of a bad movie is better than watching a good one knowing all the context even without spoilers.

The twist always steals the show, and rightly so - it's incredible.
However, on subsequent views, the thing that I appreciate more than anything else is the scene that always makes me cry (every dang time); the scene where Cole opens up to his mom, saying, "I'm ready to communicate with you now." and we get the Grandma stuff... UFFF, my eyes are like Niagra Falls. Both actors' performances are breathtaking. Beautiful scene.
Seriously, though, how is it possible that you watch anything without tissues, just in case? This was one of those great movies that I use as a barometer of empathy when exploring new reactors, and I'm always a bit suspicious of those who do not cry at the end. Golden Reaction!!!
Tissues! That's what I think about all of these reactors. Wouldn't you think they would have a couple of cases of tissues in the pantry and a minimun of 2 or 3 boxes around the viewing room?
I've noticed most reactors don't have tissues at the ready and that's always a mistake 😂 I would keep several boxes because I'm an emotional wreck when I watch movies.

I know Nat doesn’t like scary stuff but the Haunting of Hill House would be amazing for her. Such great characters and soooo well written and shot. If she can get through some of the creepy factor I think she’d love it.

This movie is so much fun to rewatch. Once you know the twist you can see all the seeds that were planted along the way.
When this movie first came out, I was supposed to go and see it with a friend at an 11AM show. On the very day it came out. I knew nothing about this movie but we were both Bruce WIllis fans so we picked this one. My friend canceled at the last minute (thankfully I had just bought my first cell phone ever literally days before this), but I was already standing there in the lobby with my ticket, so I just went.
I was TOTALLY ALONE in that movie theater. This movie scared me to death. The bit where the little girl grabs his ankle from under the bed traumatized me so much that for weeks afterward I was actually scared to approach my bed. On one occasion I got myself so worked up that I just slept on the couch.
Amazing cast in this movie, too. It was the first movie I ever saw Toni Collette in, and Olivia Williams for that matter.
Also: Vincent, the patient who shot Malcolm was Donnie Wahlberg! He lost 43 pounds to achieve that look, which is intense dedication for such a brief role. And the little ghost girl was played by Mischa Barton
Also, reportedly Shyamalan didn't really like to do twists that much; he made this movie, it had a twist, and it was a huge smash hit, and so the people who were financing his subsequent films kept demanding every film have a twist.
Man, I wish I hadn't been spoiled about this movie's twist before I saw it.
I don't know how anyone who has lost their mum can ever watch that scene in the car and not just sob.
