Great video. I've been using Canvas for awhile so this was a terrific refresher with information about items I hadn't noticed before. I really like the section on rubrics - so easy to set them up. They make grading much easier while also communicating expectations to students.
Thank you for this information. One thing I cannot seem to figure out is related to unwanted submissions or assignments submitted in the wrong area. Is there a way to remove student submissions that are mistakes?

I have a question, when I import a rubric from another course and put it in the new course, the title appears "rubric example (1)" and when trying to change in the title that part (1) guessing is copy (1) it does not change it. What would be the best way to change that (1) and remove it? Thanks for your help.

I have not experienced this yet but a couple of things to try might be: double check that there is not another rubric with that same name, try to give it a title that is specific to that assignment, or you might have to just delete and recreate it. both! speedgrader is used for everything in canvas including discussions, assignments that they upload, text boxs, etc. In my experience I've used it for everything I need to grade that isn't auto graded. Super easy!
Hello Ashlee, thanks for this video. What exactly is Speedgrader? is it that it allows you to preset the answers of the quiz before it is taken by the students so that when they answer the questions, it automatically marks the quiz based on the preset answers?
Speedgrader is the part of Canvas that is the tool you use for grading. It's how you grade everything that isn't auto graded. It turns grading by hand into an easy way to see each students submissions, view it, grade it, make comments, and easily communicate with them using rubrics for clear grading. Hi Ashlee, have you done a video on dividing the gradebook by quarters? Also, do you have (or could you please do) one on how to print the class grades (to have a hard copy for reference while comparing them to a district gradebook system). Thank you, so much!
I don't have a video on dividing the gradebook. You can export grades and then print them for your records though. Go into gradebook, click on Actions at top tab and then click export.
Great job, very helpful. I understand the privacy requirements but the huge blocks basically make it hard to follow and lose me. I am new to this canvas and seems I’m always trying to catch up to class needs. So have seen tons of vids and still lost. Trying to get students to “teach a lesson” on a whiteboard, video the presentation and somehow submitted for instructors and other students to view, comment and critique (grade with a rubric). So not sure where to go at this time. Please help. Problems so far. 1 how to get them to record themselves and submit. About a 60 min video. Loom? Studio? iPhone? Zoom? All have limits. So canvas has a size limit to download, so now what? Stuck Since they are learning to teach and it’s a very graphic thing.(flight training) I want to watch their presentation and have other student watch and comment. Is there a book to learn all of this? Very frustrating and feeling lost… any help will help thx can you refer me to any of your appropriate presentations to address some of these problems Edgar
Totally understand your frustration here. I would suggest avoiding the long videos. The best way would be to have them film and upload to TH-cam then submit the link. You might also check out using Loom. You can sign up for a free educator account and the students can sign up for a free account as well which removes the 5 min limit. here's my Canvas Tutorials series that might be helpful as you continue to learn and understand the platform. How would you make a rubric for an assignment which had already been completed by students? I want to be able to attach rubrics so that they are ready to go for next semester. Thank you.
I would suggest duplicating the assignment and then attach a rubric for the new class to have ready. You really want to avoid changing the assignment after they students have already completed it doesn't pop up on their end for that semester.
How can you remove the late indicator on a student’s grade? It may be truly late but I am choosing not to count it late. I teach secondary, so showing lots of grace!!
You would need to adjust the due dates to remove that late indicator. It's auto set for Canvas. I always tell them that even though it's late I'm flexible and understanding with the current situation. I tell them it's just a way for me to know that they haven't turned it in yet but not to worry about it. The other thing you could do is not set a due date in the actual assignment but instead type it into the RCE box along with the subscription. Then it doesn't have an actual due date auto set in Canvas and won't give them those markings.

Question: I'm using a rubric in an assignment and I'm clicking on the "grade" for each descriptor or category, and then it's showing the total at the bottom, but that's not autopopulating into the actual grade box where it says "out of 25". I click on save after I've finished using the rubric, but that total doesn't appear in that box; instead I have to enter it by hand (or it stays as a 0). Am I missing something? Shouldn't that grade automatically appear in the "out of X points" box at the top of the rubric? Thanks!
Double check that when you set up the rubric you checked the box that says "use this rubric for grading assignemnt" it's located at the very bottom of the rubric when you are in edit mode in the assignment. Hope this helps!

You might consider creating a new assignment for this. I suggest perhaps something like a journal entry or reflection entry using an assignment that they type in the box.
Have you used the conference option from Canvas or do you use Zoom. If you use Canvas to can you make a video on how you do it and how it works. I love your videos they have helps me a great deal in setting up my class.
I use zoom outside of Canvas. I personally do not like Conferzoom within canvas. It's a little confusing and clunky to me. What app do you use to imbed the video of yourself for the tutorials? I used Screencastify last spring when it was unlimited, but now I am restricted to 5 minutes. I use filmora9 for all my editing and tutorials. I love it! It's super easy and offers more than imovie but not as complicated as premiere pro or other software. I bought a lifetime subscription so it isn't free but has saved me soooo much time. Hope this helps!
After entering all the points in the rubric for each student in Speedgrader, I still have to manually retype the total points into the assignment score. This involves a lot of scrolling and typing. There is no "automatic" copying of the rubric total to the assignment score. Is there some sneaky setting I am missing?
This video tutorial is immensely helpful. I love your emojis to cover students' names. I am used to Google Classroom, so Canvas' Speedgrader sounds familiar, helpful, and user-friendly. Is Canvas also your entire Student Information System?
Glad it was helpful! Gotta protect our student info so I do like the fun emojis to take care of that :) I do find speedgrader pretty user friendly. Yes, Canvas, for me, turns into the place for SIS. I find it helpful bc it's the one place I can have all of that info stored, available and organized from class to class. I do teach at the college level though so that might be diff needs depending upon the age/level you teach and your specific needs. I also love that it shows the students their grades so they always know where they stand and everything is transparent.
Great question. I’m not sure if there is a way to make the rubric hidden to the student at this point. The rubric is for the student to know how you will grade them and offer feedback on each element. Sorry I can’t be more helpful on this.
Thank you for finally clarifying the purpose of a rubric. I have been going in circles feeling that they only offer redundant and superfluous information for my supervisors. Now I just have to make certain I do not overuse them. BTW, the emojis masking names ARE cute but their motion is highly distracting when I am trying to follow your mouse moves on the screen. I AM a little ADHD and I own it but I had to block the rocking, winking faces with my hand to focus on you.

Looking back, I really wish I had just used simple non-moving blocks to white out the student info versus the emojis. I think that was like the first time I made a video that I needed to cover up so much personal and confidential info and I hadn't found the best way to do it at that point. The grade book always calculate the average grade and post it in an “imported column” that creates by Canvas automatically. My question is that this column has not posted the average grade… How can I activate the calculation?

Hi Ashlee, I took a Zoom class from you some time back. You are ordinarly great! I find that the animated faces are very distracting, and they cover up not just student names, but also headings. So they make your video hard (for me) to follow.

I am struggling with saving annotations on assignments. I go to speed grader leave annotated comments on the student work, but then can’t seem to send the input back to the student. Can you make a video on how to save these annotations please. Your videos are great, they are keeping me alive as a new to canvas teacher.

There is currently no way to rearrange the criteria in rubrics. Hopefully Canvas can update that in the future though.

totally understand you on this. I finally discovered a way to hide student info so I do not need to use the faces. I just use boxes to cover it now :)
