    wow. i always thought the effect was weird looking, but i thought that was a weird stylistic choice. i mean look at some of the enemy designs.

      Yeah there is a chance they thought the bugged version looked better. SM64 was made to be played on CRTs so it didn't look as weirdly crisp back in 1996.

      It's definitely a stylistic choice, but it probably came up by accident initially. At some point they kept it 'cause the fuzzle cloud looked better than the texture stamps did

      @@TSPhoenix2. True, and to be fair the vanish cap transparency effect was actually made with some pixels being wholly transparent instead of Mario's model itself being semi-transparent, so the smoke actually fits that transparency style

      3D All-Stars didn't fix the "Mario? It that really you?" typo in Yoshi's dialogue either, despite changing other text.

    I feel like there's a good chance they just preferred the way the texture looked like particles with it set to RGBA. Could be wrong tho

      Probably because the overlap of the effect creates too much solid black to cover your view of what was going on, they figured eh, leave the broken one so you can see through whats happening. I agree. Its not very likely that someone wouldn't have noticed this issue through play testing, its a very pixely look.

      Whether that's the case or not isn't really relevant, since it's still clearly a bug. It's not displayed in game as the correct format, so even if they said "hey this is wrong, but it looks fine so just leave it" it doesn't change the fact that it IS technically a bug/mistake/whatever you want to label it

      ​@@cheesewheel Thats true, but this happens - if not all the time - then often. Instead of going back through the pipeline you leave it be with the closest fix you got. Usually in later stages where code and game is mostly done and gameplay is being polished and judged as a whole, with small tweaks here and there.

    There's a somewhat similar but more minor bug with Koopas. When a koopa has no shell on it looks like it's wearing pink underneath. But the pink color is due to a corrupt light entity and it should show up as white. There was a thing about it on Ukikipedia news.

    Theory: They originally used IA, a supervisor asked for a look change to the smoke, and switching it to RGBA satisfied that look change.

    Can't believe hidden secrets are still being found in Super Mario 64 after all this time. I will say that I always thought the smoke did look a little weird even as a kid. Now it makes perfect sense.

    That's the perfect example of why Super Mario 64 is a Masterpiece
    I mean, you have the graphic glitched to look like the rest of the games and fit, and then have some random person to fix the bug 20 years later to have the game adapted to the modern times.

    0:28 Wait, was it _literally_ decompiled, or was it just reverse engineered? I've always heard that a compiled product was irreversible and I've always wanted to look at some lesser known games that don't really have a huge following dedicated to dissecting them.

      It was *literally* decompiled. The main game code (excluding 3D libraries) was built without optimizations turned on, and some people got their hands on the original compiler that built the game. By using that, they were able to reconstruct C code that would compile back to the exact same bytes. It was an awesome undertaking.

      Google search for decompilers, it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to use one. It's technically illegal though, and I only used it to decompile a proprietary tool which I own the rights to.

      @@graalcloud Decompiling per se is not illegal. Redistributing the decompiled code is a copyright violation. But that is also true for redistributing the binary. I mean, maybe it's different in America than here in Europe, but I doubt it.

    Lots of people claiming Nintendo is lazy not to fix this when the reality is it probably slipped by because the corrupted version looks fine enough not to raise suspicion. Playtesters wouldn't bring it up because it looks like smoke. Now if it had somehow been rendered as a mass of clown vomit pixels, then it would have been reported, but since it's simply black and transparent, nobody noticed.

      Since I got the game when it came out, I can tell you that it looked rather bad to me even back then and on a CRT. It didn't seem to fit with the rest of the game, to be honest.

    What there is inside the rgb channel?
    It looks that its using the alpha channel and mixing it with the rgb info to create the effect. And inmy opinion if there info in the rgb the effect is intended

      After checking, yes, they did fix this issue. That explains why I never thought the smoke looked odd. This one difference must mean that the DS version is the definitive edition!

    20 YEARS, Nintendo, twenty years of my life I've been waiting for this game-breaking bug to get patched out. EA can whip out literally dozens of patches and fixes by only a few MONTHS after release. Why can't you be more like them??

      Just use a rom patcher to apply the patch on your pc. Get the rom on your pc. Then put your sd card in this pc and paste the patched rom in this sd card. Put the sd card back to your everdrive and enjoy the patch

    I'm still waiting for someone to discover the chapel room that ended up in the USA-2 cartridge my friend found by accident. It looked like a church with benches and an alter, red carpet, peach windows on the walls, and a different music using the violin instrument used in the castle. I grabbed the controller demanding to know how he got there, and he said "I jumped in the picture of peach"... uuh ok. I left the room and it floated me down on the bridge in front of the castle. I spent years trying to figure out how and what he did, but no luck. No longer own the game, but wondering if anyone else had that second edition cartridge from 97 and found it?
    The other differences in the game I can remember was being able to have a save file with zero stars, and the first bowser stage had a one of the blue stars on the ground for the red coin star, which was on top of the first brick platform above the swinging whatevers lol.
    Please let me know if anyone has this version

    The fix is actually as simple as changing 3 letters if you don't delete the 'A' that already exists. 😉😆

    It is a fact that Nintendo could've done better with his games back at the N64 era, like, so many things could've been done by that time, but didn't, and modders had to do instead, here are these two examples:
    - SM64 Splitscreen Multiplayer. (what can I say? Nintendo was just proven wrong.)
    - Expanded roster for Smash Bros. 64 (which needs an expansion pack if I'm not wrong, but that would've surely increased the expansion pack sales or something.)
    And I'm also likely to be missing any other, but I think that was enough to prove my point, I can't believe that the modding community has fixed errors made by professional developers, smh Nintendo.

    You mean it is as simple as changing _three_ letters. You do not need to change the "A" at all. Technically, you change _one_ letter and remove two of them.

      It doesn't have to disturb you, the programmers made a mistake in how it was rendered irregardless of preference

      And I don't understand why most of the SM64 players think that this texture was a mistake. 🤔

    Damn. Can't believe that Nintendo would ever make a mistake like that, I thought they were cool but now I aint gonna buy any Nintendo game ever again knowing it's probably just gonna be one big mess made by a bunch of incompetent fools!
