My close friends who made it home from their tours in ‘Nam would be back there with the opening chords of this song. CCR was quite simply the sound track for our lives. They still are.
As one of the others said, people *assume* it is about the Vietnam War. However, Fogerty wrote it about the proliferation of guns in the US ("200 million guns are loaded, Satan cries 'Take aim.'") This song has an interesting legal historical footnote attached to it. In 1985, John Fogerty released his excellent solo album called Centerfield. The first single from that album was a song called The Old Man Down The Road. It was a virtual note-for-note remake of Run Through The Jungle with all new lyrics. CCR's old label Fantasy Records, whom Fogerty had been feuding with for years, sued him for plagiarism. The judge in the case ruled that a songwriter can't be convicted of plagiarizing his own song!! Therefore, an important legal precedent in the music industry!
Specifically Fogerty was sued by Saul Van Zant who owned all of CCR’s recordings. The Centerfield album closed with a scathing number aimed directly at Saul called Vance Can’t Dance!
'Have You Ever Seen The Rain' is my favorite song by them. It makes me wanna grow a beard and drink Moonshine every time I hear it. LMFAO! 😂😂😂 My Mother loves that song. Give it a review Jayvee 😁💖
We see Vietnam war movies now and these songs are the soundtrack -- just like they were for the real thing. But what surprised me was to learn how much these songs are still listened to in the areas around the Vietnam War, where so many soldiers stayed when things ended. I remember being in a bamboo-shack restaurant on stilts over the Mekong River, right between Laos and Thailand, eating Northern Thai curry while these CCR songs would belt out on the stereo above me -- and I was one of the only white people staying in that town of 2,000 in rural Thailand. This song brings me right back to that -- the Mekong River and seven weeks spent living in a whole other world on that riverbank. Music is so amazing.
As far as I'm aware they only did 2 songs about Vietnam. This 1 & Fortunate Son. John Fogerty (the lead singer) was actually on active duty for 6 months & on the Reserves from 1966-1968 during the war.
People assume it is about the Vietnam War. However, Fogerty wrote it about the proliferation of guns in the US ("200 million guns are loaded, Satan cries 'Take aim.'") I was in high school during the VN war, but didn’t have a clue what it was like. Of course I since learned. This song helps you feel it. Always love CCR, love your show.
"Run through the jungle "has been in so many movies.Love the harmonica in this one.Swamp rock at its best.A serious song with a beat that will get the shoulders moving.Fogerty's voice was made for this song.
You should really listen to “Long as I can see the light” by CCR. It will blow you away. One of Fogerty’s best vocal performances and he also plays a mean saxophone.
Was literally listening to them the other day, relaxing outside in the sun lol. John wrote and sang so many gems. "Green river", " Up around the bend", "Midnight special", "Who'll stop the rain", etc. All and more are worth a listen. You can never go wrong with creedence
Yeap I remember that sound coming out of my older brothers room back in the day... my brother love playing the Harmonica to it... great memories... peace✌
You are very correct!!! CCR soulfully always bring it and that is why they are one of my all-time favorite Rock bands.....and John's vocal ...nothing like it in music history!!!!
Jovaughn, it seems as though your journey as a reactor has been very expansive. You have read heartfelt comments on the experiences of others and that is turning into an education of a lifetime. I can see the changes in you in the past year. Giving is receiving and receiving is giving. You are on both sides of that beautiful equation. Enjoy.
John Fogertys voice is an instrument unto itself. This is my favorite piece of music from CCR because of the simplistic masterpiece it paints of the Vietnam era atmosphere. You should check out his bayou impression of death on the track, 'The Old Man Down the Road'. And then close your eyes and really to the soul in his voice when he sings, 'One Hundred and Ten in the Shade', with the gospel group, the Fairfield Five. A truly stunning performance.
The song's title and lyrics, as well as the year it was released (1970), have led many to assume that the song is about the Vietnam War. The fact that previous Creedence Clearwater Revival songs such as "Fortunate Son" were protests of the Vietnam War added to this belief.[3] However, in a 2016 interview, Fogerty explained that the song is actually about the proliferation of guns in the United States. The thing I wanted to talk about was gun control and the proliferation of guns... I remember reading around that time that there was one gun for every man, woman and child in America, which I found staggering. So somewhere in the song, I think I said, '200 million guns are loaded.' Not that anyone else has the answer, but I did not have the answer to the question; I just had the question. I just thought it was disturbing that it was such a jungle for our citizens just to walk around in our own country at least having to be aware that there are so many private guns owned by some responsible and maybe many irresponsible people.[4]
He said this in 2016, did he? Of course he did. He is now woke. 50 years ago and he was talking about gun control and I'm sure Who'll Stop The Rain was really about climate change. He didn't know how to express his true feelings in the 60s-70s because he was high, but praise the Lord he knows now. Thank you for the info.
@@snakeinthegrass7443 MAYBE he was 'woke' before everyone else, since the US population in 1970 was 200 million ("Two hundred million guns are loaded"). So yeah - he knows now, and apparently he knew then.
CCR... where to even begin? So many great tracks! This one is a classic. Also check out "have you ever seen the rain" and "looking out my back door" as well...
CCR music will never become old. Their music is timeless. Part of the soundtrack of my childhood, listening to CCR through my parents and now having their records in my own collection.👍😉🎶❤️
You hit the nail on the head.... John Forgerty was a genius and he created atmospheres... he could describe things with his music and give you a perfect picture of what he was trying to convey.
Jayvee, your right. This song is about the Vietnam war which was raging at the time and many protest against were taking place around the country. May I suggest another C.C.R. song about coming home from the Vietnam war titled Put A Candle In The Window which I think you will enjoy very much as your next C.C.R. reaction song.
CCR was one of my dad's favorite bands so I grew up listening to them. He had a tape of their greatest hits in the car and we'd listen to it on road trips. When I became a dad I made sure to play CCR for my sons who now can sing just about all of their songs. Hopefully one day if they have kids, they'll do the same.
This song and "Fortunate son" takes me back to my childhood. I am an old X-gener and most of us were the children or family of Vietnam vets, and the generation that first saw and experienced our parents and family that served treated like trash and left traumatized and broken. It wasn't to be spoken of, there was no real understanding of PTSD from war... CCR:s song at least gave some voice to it. I always have thought that growing up in that time is why so many X+gen wanted nothing to do with politics and the hypocrisy. Why there was the break from mainstream into grunge and alternative and heavy metal. We were angry and disillusioned. Some of us still are. At least music was a release and at least some bands like CCR told the tale that we needed to hear and validate what our families who fought in Vietnam went through. Okay, off my soap box. Glad you liked the song.
Your commentary on this song was great. You have a great real personality. Enjoy watching your show. In the old days we use to experience music but not just in sound but in your heart

This song is so reminiscent of the Vietnam era. Great song 🎶
Bingo!
Not one person told you that this was a song about the Vietnam War. You guessed it correctly.
You can hear it on the movie, Forrest Gump.
Only people who are ignorant to history would not realize what this song is about.
Not about Vietnam, but people associated it with Vietnam so it has been assumed so.

Doesn't sound note-for-note to me. Similar, sure, but different too. Crazy case!
I remember thinking a great moment in music for the writer of their songs as I'm a writer myself.
Big thanks to my 5th grade teacher, Mr Rielly, for not following the school music book curriculum, and introducing us to Creedence.

Green River is another great CCR song
Every song is great.
My #1 band of all times. Right up there with Prince.
Years later after I got back from Desert Storm, we had a Parade, I made sure my dad walked beside me in that Parade.
