After 9 years I still come back and watch this playthrough. If you did a monthly Mage Knight scenario play on this channel I have to believe it would be extremely popular. I know I would be waiting patiently for each video just like I did nearly a decade ago
Ahh yes, even 5 years later, this is still the gold standard of board gaming playthroughs. I'm pretty sure you ignited an entire youtube genre with this series. Soooo many other people doing playthroughs now - and I bet 95% of them started because of this very series.
Hi Ricky, Thank you very much for your Mage Knight videocasts. I've played quite a number of boardgames in my time and taught quite a few to others but no game had me quite as stumped as Mage Knight. I've no idea how you managed to get to the bottom of the rules of this byzantine game but you did and because of you I am now playing and relishing its complexity. Thanks mate, you're a star!
It has been 7 years since I first watched these videos and learned to play this game. It was my #1 game until this year, and that is because I haven't played recently. It was a pure pleasure back then to be taught this wonderful game by you, and led to many years of fun (borderline obsessively?) playing solo board games. So I'm back trying to recapture some of that early spirit, as well as brush up on the rules and mindset of the game that you so expertly capture. By today's bg playthrough content standards, this 2-hour playlist seems extremely concise. And I don't think it's the content creators. I think recent solo games (at least the ones generating the majority of solo bg playthrough videos) tend to skew heavily toward longer play time/more content/campaign-centric/inclusion of narrative. Mage Knight doesn't feel like a "big game" anymore.
that's a great observation. Back in 2012 we really had to hunt out great solo games; now the market has changed so very much. We are truly spoiled for choice !
I just bought Mage Knight and read on BGG to watch these first, I have to say it definitely made learning and playing the game much much easier! Thanks heaps for making these! I hope you still enjoy playing it 7 years later 🤣
Hey Richard, I just got into board games and am mostly interested in solo play. Mage Knight is the first game I'm starting with. These are great walkthroughs even for today. Thanks for all your contributions to the community!
So I FINALLY picked a copy of this game up...and after unboxing it and watching a couple of play throughs...I've come to a sudden realization. I'mma need a bigger house to play this in...
I recreated your game and played along to your videos, it makes everything way easier to understand. I'm going to play "First Reconnaissance" again on my own this time, thank you so much. Also, for everyone else starting out, if you have the Ultimate Edition, keep in mind that one of the cards in each character deck has been changed, so if you do what I did and play along to this video, you may find a few different cards, they have almost the same effects as the ones in the regular edition, but they have been changed to better represent each Mage Knight abilities. Also, some of the text in the cards has been simplified and the cards you have to take out of the decks are the same, but are numbered differently in Ultimate Edition so, you have to remove cards 81 to 92 and 109 to 112. Thanks again for this fantastic series, can't wait to check out your playthroughs of the expansion sets.
Thank you for identifying the card changes in UE by the UE numbers. The card removals take place at 2:37 and 3:10 in this walkthrough. It looks like in UE, Improvisation was replaced by Instinct in the Tovak deck. It looks like Tranquility was replaced by Rejuvenate in the Norowas deck. Those are just two I’ve noticed so far.
I have watched all your Mage Knight videos not a few times now. Your descriptions, explanations and demonstrations of the many game elements and rules are very informative. You have really helped me understand the rules and game play better. It also helps that you have a soothing and clear voice. Thank you for sharing your passion for this game.
I appreciate all the cuts and camera focuses you do to show what actions you're performing. It really helps show things clearly and makes it easy to follow. This series got me to order Mage Knight, and now I'm subbed and looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.
Thank you! I hate wasting time referring to a rulebook during play. I watched this video during my first campaign. I stopped my game after the second turn and finished the series. I played the first scenario again and feel very comfortable with the game now. Great series fellow! :)
Just wanted to say thank you for this incredible series of videos! As someone who just recently picked up Mage Knight, I have to say that this video series complemented the rule books perfectly.
Thank you for this outstanding set of videos. Others glossed over the rules and didn't really help me learn the systems, whereas you made a colossal effort to clarify and explain. I appreciate that you went back and corrected yourself when you made small mistakes, and that you showed ways which you could have better used your resources after making some moves. I will keep an eye on your channel to be certain. Can't wait to see the next scenario. Keep it up.
So glad I came across your channel. Without question, the best playthroughs / rules explainations ever.... I figured Mage Knight would be way too advanced for a newbie like myself, but these vids have totally changed my mind.. Order on its way. Thanks man 👍👍👍👍👍
This vid is what taught me how to play the game. The rule books helped for some finer points but on the whole, these vids did all the grunt work. Thank you.
Many thanks for putting together such a terrific set of videos explaining what, to many, is a rather complex board game. Although I don't have the game yet, it's on my Christmas list thanks to your clear explanations of how to play. Looking forward to future "how to play" board game videos.
Having just picked up the big box version of this game in a knock down sale ( all the tokens the same size and colour lol) I thought it’s time to revisit this …it is awesome, matured like a fine wine …Modern Cardboard has now also done a pretty good comprehensive teach of this game well worth taking a look at to supplement this excellent albeit aged series …lol
Thank you so much for these 3 series!! Expertly edited and very comprehensive. You saved me a LOT of trouble trying to grasp this game through the rather complicated manual. Keep up the good work. Your's is a channel I'll be referring back to regularly from now on. Cheers!
Wow ... just wow. This is a very heavy, complicated game which you explain so thoroughly and perfectly. Very nice work, and I look forward to more of your vids. Thank you!
Awesome video series! Helped me clear up some confusing rules and I've been loving the solo conquest. It's not that difficult once you get in the flow of the game. Thank you!
Thanks for all of your great videos! Your vids pushed me over the edge to get this game. Videos can't do the design and art justice, though yours come closer than anywhere else on the web! Watching you play got me interested, opening the box made me thankful for you X)
Great videos on this game. Just watched them all this past weekend! Good clarification of the rules and made learning the game much easier. Awesome game too. Still have not beat the conquest solo yet.....
Also, for those with Tabletop Simulator, Mage Knight is on at steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1721301081 It's fully scripted, and a great way to play along with Ricky.
Read both rule books and got confused !!! Your video has made everything so clear. Why do the rule books make one feel like an idiot ? !!! Kind regards and many thanks.
Really is one of the best board games I have ever played. It is chunky and full of rpg like elements. Well worth the money in my book. I love Thunderstone, Gosu, Carcasone (spelling) etc. I would recommend this game over them any day of the week (depending on the type of game you like). This set of vids were fantastic. Thank you very much for posting them up. Have you linked them at Boardgame Geek? If not then you should. They would help a lot of folks out :D
Yes, exactly that. I have done 4 MK series so far. This is the First Recon, then I do a Solo conquest, then a short 3 episodes on multiplayer, and my latest series was with the Lost Legion expansion.
i had this game on my shelf for almost 1 year now... tried to look into it when i got it but got dizzy from all the rules and bits and pieces, and had to sit down. :/ right now im learning Wrath of Ashardalon for my daughters sake. will come back to this soon though. cheers. ;)
stay strong; there is lots of goodness in the real world too. Enjoy your gaming! It is a great way for me to unwind and switch off from stress. Best wishes, Ricky.
Many, many thanks for this series! The game is on its way and your videos are helping me understand everything so I will be ready to start playing right away! Subscribed to your great channel! Keep up the good work!
ricky, great work on these videos. HUGE help understanding this enormously complex game. i have one real question: where in the rulebook does it say that each tactic card can only be played once per game? i can't find it anywhere - and it makes more sense to me that all 6 cards would be available for each round...
You can play with 4 that way just fine... the problem though is that you will have the lack of challenge not using a dummy player. The aim of dummy is to act as a clock. Therefore I would suggest you houserule in a clock (e.g. max 4 turns per round), otherwise you can go real slow and make the game last ages and give yourselves more of an advantage than intended. Or, if you are learning, feel free to play that way, it will still work just fine. You'll need to use adv locations to gain more fame
Hey Ricky - any chance you might be interested in making an overview video for those who have played renegade and are interested in mage knight? i.e. 'mage knight for renegade players' - I LOVE LOVE LOVE renegade and found a cheap copy of mage knight so it's on my shelf and I'm trying to learn how to play it. I hear there are similarities so a video using renegade as a touch point for explaining mage knight might be really helpful. If you're into it you could do a video the other direction too, i.e. 'renegade for mage knight players'
Hi, thank you for your comment! Wow, there's an ambitious thought. There are some similarities in the puzzle-like nature of using your hand. My hunch is that more people will be coming the other direction.. Mage Knight has a much bigger audience.
Hi, I enjoyed this video. The font you use at the end of the video, it immediately reminded me of Goldeneye 007on the N64. I know it's a long shot but that wouldn't be deliberate, would it?
Watch the video, to give you an idea on how the game flows, and then have a go. Or, have a go, don't worry about getting the rules 100%, just get a feel for the game, make mistakes, learn from them, then watch the video. Whichever you think is best for you :)
There are tons and tons of great reviews for this game but so many of them say there is just so much going on and its very complicated. I had removed it from my wish list because I figured it would be a nightmare to learn and explain to other people. I'm looking forward to watching all the videos and hopefully adding it back on for future purchase.
Congrats on getting the game... hope you enjoy the conquest... do try the dummy, it's real simple and adds tension... I like it more than I ever expected to.... enjoy!
I just got the game today after watching this and the conquest series! Ill try it later can't wait. By the way it's funny how the pieces seem small after watching the videos XD. Probably because the camera is zoomed so we can see well.
Hey Ricky... your videos are the best and I've watched them all for Mage Knight :D Thanks to you I've now bought the game and intend to play with my group of friends (4 total) was wondering if you have any recommended scenarios to play that would be best. I know you say you enjoy this solo but yolo ^^
I am so excited for the video series of this game , I am a solo gamer and this game its on my want list and now I will be able to decide if I would like to have it , t
because they all get mixed into the same deck; if they had different backs, a player would know what cards were what when drawing from that deck, and that would be a little cheatin'
I have a question regarding battles with monsters. I failed to defeat a monster in the monster den. Do I stay on the tile or move back to where I came from?
***** You stay on the monster den hex. The monster den is hidden in a cave, and you can end your movement there without going in to fight, or exit leaving the monster undefeated. The thing to remember with monster dens is, once you go in and fight the beast, if you come out leaving it undefended, the monster stays there and everyone now knows what it is.
Okay I was confused and can't seem to find anything online about it. I know if you fail to defeat the fortified sites you'll have to move back to where you had attacked. Thanks again for the clarification.
Nice job on the videos. Just got the game and trying to learn it solo so I can play with some friends next weekend. I have a question, maybe two. First, does anyone know of a FAQ for the game? I tried looking but can't find any. If there is not one I have a question on Black Mana at night. It says something about it not being worth anything but instead amplifies basic colors you use or something to that effect. Problem is, they didn't give any examples and I feel like I'm only guessing.
Do you have a video series about Shades of Tezla? Nothign turns up for your channel.. and I am shocked. Shocked I say! I don't know how I will survive :(
Ricky Royal i know its beating an old horse but .. love your channel now that I have found it :) Any chance for quick fire reviews .. of various things say, but toss in a 2 mins review of Tezla? But too late maybe. Did you like the faction mechanic and combatting the factions instead of city assaults? Do you mix all the counters in together and then pull them all out one by one to do a Tezla scenario? So far I am thinking of keeping them separate as LL added enough to base game, but use all the characters Did you ever try any of the boardgamegeek scenarios? Theres a couple documents people pulled thread submissions into, so you can get a pdf with a few dozen scenarios in it ..
I may do a Tezla video at some point.... I did hope to do one, just things have stalled a bit at the moment and I'm struggling to get content out due to lack of time. But never say "never", right?!
Ricky Royal Making video is a tonne of effort. I hope you have many cameras since you have the die roll cam and the board cam and one to show hands with .. it would be torture if you kept pausing to move just one around on :) Love your work. Will stop bugging you now ;)
it is just one camera, so it takes about 2 hours to shoot 15 mins. But it was a style I think I adopted when I started and it works, but yes, it is time consuming - but fun !! :) Most of the time, and why I struggle, is doing lots of plays, lots of research, making sure I am getting rules right and re-shooting mistakes. A complicated game takes a bit of self-motivation sometimes !
Hey Ricky Great video! Question regarding the countryside tiles. Why did you remove the three tiles? The rulebook mentioned to remove them in a two player game. Thanks!
This is only for the first game, for the walkthrough. Page 4 of the walkthrough rulebook: "Note: For the first game, there should be at least one Unit in the offer with the village icon on the left side of the card. If not, shuffle the cards and deal them until this is true."
So this game is now a 'classic' for solo board games. I have played Pathfinder TCG some, and LOTR LCG some. I think I like Pathfinder better, because its closer to playing AD&D games, like Baldur's Gate, where you can create a character and progress its skills and such. LOTR does't have any of that aspect. How does Mage Knight stack up to those two games, in your opinion?
I think Mage Knight is better for me; Mage Knight hits a special sweet spot for the kind of puzzle it presents for solo gaming. This is why I love it so much. I love the crunchiness of the analysis.
Thanks, +Ricky Royal for this series. Any suggestions on how to get into the back story of the game? Personally, I find that to be a very important element in ejoying the whole experience playing.

I agree this video series has been the most helpful and the beginning of series like this

Mage Knight is the first game I'm starting with.
These are great walkthroughs even for today.
Thanks for all your contributions to the community!
my pleasure. Welcome to a super hobby! Hope you enjoy playing Mage Knight... it's a beauty !
Just over 10 years old and the video stands up great. Well done. Thank you.
So I FINALLY picked a copy of this game up...and after unboxing it and
watching a couple of play throughs...I've come to a sudden realization.

Thanks again for this fantastic series, can't wait to check out your playthroughs of the expansion sets.
thank you for the info re Ultimate Edition; that's really helpful for new folks - much appreciated ! Hope you enjoy the game... R.R.
Walkthrough only states to remove 81-92, nothing about 109-112.
Brilliant video. Perfect pace, perfect amount of info without going too far into detail and clean presentation. Thank you.
As someone who just recently picked up Mage Knight, I have to say that this video series complemented the rule books perfectly.
thank you ! Happy gaming !!
Just an FYI if you have the Ultimate Edition the card numbers are different. Remove 109 - 112 and 81 - 92.
They changed the card numbers ?! Thank you for the info .
@@BoxofDelightsYes, every card has an unique number... including the expansions. Thanks for these videos and looking forward to trying Rebegade!
Why do you need to remove cards?
As well as the cards marked UE and ones marked with the expansion symbol I assume? Thanks Tcomedy as well.
This is the way you learn to play! thanks for the cuts and everything
This is fantastic. Picked this up this week, found this walk through. Thank you for the visual demonstration.
Thank you so much!! I recently got into board gaming and decided to tackle this beast from the get go, I couldn't have done it without your videos!!

This must be the best series of instruction videos EVER

Having just picked up the big box version of this game in a knock down sale ( all the tokens the same size and colour lol) I thought it’s time to revisit this …it is awesome, matured like a fine wine …Modern Cardboard has now also done a pretty good comprehensive teach of this game well worth taking a look at to supplement this excellent albeit aged series …lol
thank you; yes, Modern Cardboard does great videos. Good shout!
Thank you so much for these 3 series!! Expertly edited and very comprehensive. You saved me a LOT of trouble trying to grasp this game through the rather complicated manual. Keep up the good work. Your's is a channel I'll be referring back to regularly from now on. Cheers!
These videos made me buy this game a few years ago. I still play from time to time :D
I got this game for $25 at an FLGS just because of a small dent in the box. How could I NOT buy this!?!!
I am planning to play this tonight with my daughter as I bought the game on the weekend. Thanks for the walk through!
Have fun ! Great choice ;)
Wow ... just wow. This is a very heavy, complicated game which you explain so thoroughly and perfectly. Very nice work, and I look forward to more of your vids. Thank you!
thank you :o-) and thanks for watching !
Watching all these videos on this and your other games.
I like your calm, precise, concise style.
Keep it up.
I was searching for a playthrough of this game, so glad that you decided to do it. I'm really looking forward to the actual gameplay.
Solitaire is great with this game.. great for cold winter nights
Awesome video series! Helped me clear up some confusing rules and I've been loving the solo conquest. It's not that difficult once you get in the flow of the game. Thank you!
Fantastic video! You have a very clear and shall I say "soothing" manner to your explanation. Thanks again.
Thank you for putting this series together, very much appreciated! Helped me better understand the flow and mechanics. Cheers!
Great video. I just the got the game and it was a bit overwhelming. Your production really smoothed things out. Many thanks.
Still the best guide out there, thank you so much!
my pleasure! thank you 👍👍
Thanks for all of your great videos!

Thanks a lot for your video series, it's definitely the best on TH-cam! I'm now finally ready to enjoy this great game!
thanks Alessandro ! hope you enjoy the game !!
Great series..Everyone who gets this game should watch this.
Thank you 😊
phenomenal clarification of the set up
watching this while i wait for my card sleeves to arrive. very good intro to setting up
Just wanted to let you know that I bought this game and memoir 44 because of these play through videos. Thank you for them.
Great videos on this game. Just watched them all this past weekend! Good clarification of the rules and made learning the game much easier. Awesome game too. Still have not beat the conquest solo yet.....
Very Nice explanation. Very clear. I was a bit intimidated by this game at first. Can't wait for the full walkthrough...
Also, for those with Tabletop Simulator, Mage Knight is on at steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1721301081
It's fully scripted, and a great way to play along with Ricky.
Fantastic work here. Cheers for putting the effort in.
thanks wiz ! I hope you enjoy playing the game , and the rest of the channel. Thanks for your comment, Rick
As I said in BGG, thank you for these videos (help me a lot to understand game´s manual). Good work!
thank you ! much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to post your support. Rick
IMHO, the music adds a comforting atmosphere.
I'm watching these with the captions on, and it's one of the greatest things I've ever seen. The captions are so terrible!
You're welcome ! Thanks for watching and for your nice comment !!

This video is way more useful than the rules that come with the game.
I re-watch this video when I feel depressed. It gives me a sensation that the world is orderly and working the way its supposed to.
stay strong; there is lots of goodness in the real world too. Enjoy your gaming! It is a great way for me to unwind and switch off from stress. Best wishes, Ricky.

Hope you enjoy the series! R.R.

2019 and steel wach this!!!!
Congrats on getting the game... hope you enjoy the conquest... do try the dummy, it's real simple and adds tension... I like it more than I ever expected to.... enjoy!
Everything always looks bigger on the telly... :) The components are nice though, right ?! New box of stuff is always good.. !!
I just got the game today after watching this and the conquest series! Ill try it later can't wait. By the way it's funny how the pieces seem small after watching the videos XD. Probably because the camera is zoomed so we can see well.
Tremblay Pierre-André just hold them really close :) Hope you enjoy the game ... have fun!
Part 2 can't come soon enough!
Nice video man! What is that instrumental at the beginning? It's banging!
cheers. It's just some iMovie stock audio.
Great guide - your tutorial finally made up my mind to pick this up and what a great purchase! Fantastic - thanks!
Great choice! Hope you love the game. Best wishes, Rick
Just got this game yesterday. Will try to play this weekend. Thanks for the videos! The rulebook is just horrible... Your walkthru helps a ton!
pleasure !
The rulebook is more of an index, while you're expected to use the walkthrough book for your first game. It actually works pretty well in this regard.
Start with First Recon, and then multi-player go for the blitz scenario first. Hope you enjoy the game! and thanks for watching !!
I am so excited for the video series of this game , I am a solo gamer and this game its on my want list and now I will be able to decide if I would like to have it , t
Why are there so many different types of cards with the same back?
because they all get mixed into the same deck; if they had different backs, a player would know what cards were what when drawing from that deck, and that would be a little cheatin'
By any chance are you planning on doing Star Trek Frontiers teach?
I watched this like 20 times and I bought it the first time I watched this
Nice job on the videos. Problem is, they didn't give any examples and I feel like I'm only guessing.
one of the best games out there in my opinion. thank you very much for your review. it is awesome
hey dude I have to let you know, I'm buying this just because of your videos. You (and the game also ofc) are awesome!
Do you have a video series about Shades of Tezla? Nothign turns up for your channel.. and I am shocked. Shocked I say! I don't know how I will survive :(
Hi Jeff, no, I've haven't done that one. I figured folks were bored of MK now.... (haha!)
So far I am thinking of keeping them separate as LL added enough to base game, but use all the characters
Did you ever try any of the boardgamegeek scenarios? Theres a couple documents people pulled thread submissions into, so you can get a pdf with a few dozen scenarios in it ..
I may do a Tezla video at some point.... I did hope to do one, just things have stalled a bit at the moment and I'm struggling to get content out due to lack of time. But never say "never", right?!
Ricky Royal Making video is a tonne of effort. I hope you have many cameras since you have the die roll cam and the board cam and one to show hands with .. it would be torture if you kept pausing to move just one around on :)
Love your work.
What device are you playing on ? I don't get the volume issue, but plenty of folks do. I would like to learn ! thanks, Rick
Planning to get Mage Knight Ultimate Edition and somehow I ended up here....
good choice!
Great video series! Thanks so much for the detailed walkthrough! I might just have to pick this one up.
Hey Ricky
Great video! Question regarding the countryside tiles. Why did you remove the three tiles? The rulebook mentioned to remove them in a two player game. Thanks!
Nevermind! Found it in the Solo Variant section for First Recon. in the rulebook. Apologies!
Personally, I find that to be a very important element in ejoying the whole experience playing.
alex villasana You could try here: mageknightuniverse.blogspot.co.uk/
alex villasana There are five novels published by Del Rey/Ballantine books. The first novel is Mage Knight 1: Rebel Thunder written by Bill McCay. Again, thank you sir for your help. I will check those sources.
alex villasana You're welcome. I put the same info on BGG plus a bit more, for you and anyone else. Best wishes, Rick
thanks Joey! hey , that's great to hear. Enjoy your games :)
You are awsome =) really... but pls.. do a new version in 1080p .. please =) this hurts my eyes
haha.... 720 is just not enough any more.
would very much want to try it!
you could, yes. use co-op rules for a team of 2 and competitive rules for the two teams working against eachother. Good idea ! :)
