- *UPDATE* Google has just announced only meeting creators and calendar owners can mute or remove other participants in a meeting.
We recently replaced Google Hangouts with Google Meet in our organisation, so this guide will walk you through how to use Meet and explain some of its features.

Thank you! I'm a teacher, looking at the (dreaded!) possibility of managing a Grade 4 class from home, with everyone getting together in Google Meet during a COVID-19 "holiday". This makes it look almost possible. :)
I am part of the tech department at my school and we are transitionining over. I am mostly focused on lower school (PreK-4) and it is very possible. We are going to have 3 weeks of virtual learning, and we will use Meet in Grades 1-4 for our morning meetings, instructions, and check ins with students.
Hello Maureen, if you want to create a meet link for a section that will repeat daily, you can do that from your Google Calendar and that will keep that link live. You could do just one and the students go in and out of it throughout the day like they enter and exit your classroom, if that is easier for you and the students will only need that one link. We are doing different sections and setting it all up through our calendar and making a Google doc with all of the meetings linked that we embedded on a website students will access.

My sons teacher is still using zoom but my sons aid uses this to keep connected with my son and I can not Express how invaluable it is to me right now. We would be so lost without her.

Sorry silly question. I have Gmail and this Meet option suddenly appeared this morning so found you video which is great thanks. But do the other people you invite have to have a Gmail email account? Thanks
Do you have to create your meeting at the time you want it and not at a later time ? That's what I did created a class meeting in calendar and sent invites but when it was time there was not login to accept.
The Meet link doesn't have a time specification to it. So once the Meeting is created you should be able to use it later.
I got a green screen and were using this google meet up for online class i got a question should i use my green screen to rick roll or [your opinion on reply section]

Looks really easy on the video - less so when you come to use it for real. Like all these solutions it is much more clunky and complicated to use than it appears on a slick video like this. However the video here is well presented and sounds clear.
Life always gets more complicated when you add people and reality in!

Good day, thank you for the video. I was looking for more features to control the meet, especially if it is with my students, like controlling the microphone, mute it through my presentation, then open for discussion. Being able to share my screen to present not only face to face conversation. Controlling childish behavior; making sure no one is removing other students. something more like Webinar. is that possible?
You can mute participants, but this can only be done one at a time.
You can remove participants from the call.
Both of these settings are on the drop down by the person's name.
The Present Now feature in the bottom right corner allows you to share your screen.
There doesn't seem to be any function to stop participants removing others.
For a more controlled environment you could use the live feature on TH-cam. I'll try and post a video on this asap.
I used this for the first time with my students today. They all kept talking and the screen kept flashing between all of them. How do I make it so they can't talk, but only listen to me? Ask them to turn off their microphone? Am I able to control that from the side menu? Then unmute it when I want them to talk?
@@cassandrawhite107 As the host you should be able to mute microphones, but the student would (and can) need to unmute themselves. I think it will take a short while for people to learn Conference call etiquette.
My teachers are wanting to use this, but I’m wanting to know if I have to allow my camera and microphone to be able to view the meeting. I am wary of having my computer’s camera on, as well as the microphone, but I would like to still view what others are saying in the meetings.
You can turn both your camera and mic off.

There is a new function for Meet in Google Classroom just out. This may only be for Education though. Either way, you can just get the Meet url and share that and whoever has it can click to try and join.
how can you see what's going on when there a block covering the area.
can participants all speak together or is it one speaker only at one time. I am looking for a platform that would facilitate a "virtual" choir
so it requires all singing together and hearing all other participants
All can speak together but there is a small lag so i don't think it would work well for this.
Is the created meeting "room" persistant ? or do you have to create a new room anytime after you left it ? Lets say i want to plan the meeting one week before, the process is not clear, the code will be valid ? sorry for my questions...
If you start a call then the link to join still works later, but I don't know how long this lasts I'm afraid. I'd be happy to update you in a week's time.
A better option would be to create a calendar invite because this link is permanent.

Hi Daniel. If you mean the thumbnail video in the top right corner, I don't think there is a way of hiding just your video. You can pin camera screens so they remain on top. You can also click the 3 dots in the bottom right corner (on a browser screen) and there is a "Change layout" option. I hope these options prove of some help.
For me, the button "+ Start a new meeting" is missing. It seems this feature is for who has a G Suite account only.
Yes, I assume you can only start a call if you have a G Suite account.

@@etu86 I double checked and Meet is available for G Suite for Education and Business. If you are using a personal Gmail account you could use Google Hangouts - hangouts.google.com/

Yes it can, although be careful how much of your data it uses up if you don't have much.

How do you share your screen see yourself and see the participants for a live class
you will need to have two versions of the call open. This can be done on two browser tabs. it works best if you have two screens

I used it but my participants also had control over admitting, denying, muting even the originator of the call. I was unable to undo that person from muting a person or admitting people. Do we have control over our meeting? I was only allowed to mute people I admitted.
A different option is to use the stream option. This means students can watch rather than join the call. You can turn this option on when you create a calendar invite, add conferencing, click the meet dropdown for more options and turn Stream on there. In then appears above the record option in the Meet

Yes, you can see everyone who is on a call. If you want to keep a certain person on the screen then click on their image to pin them.
Does anyone know how to record a Google Meet? I'm a math teacher and need to present problem solving via Jamboard (online web program/ipad??? NOT sure yet how to do this). I'll need to record the meeting for kids who miss the session. Any advise is greatly appreciated!!!
Check if your admin has turned this on yet. Mine is getting turned on today so I hopefully will release a video on this today or tomorrow.
@@ITTrainerLAT We figured it out. After the admin turns it on, there is a record button above change layout (?). Look for the the three dot menu (in the lower right hand corner of the rectangular pop-up window when you hover at the bottom of the screen) to find the record button.
for some reason it does not allow me to create a new classroom. Do you know what can be the issue?
You need a Education or Enterprise account, and it needs to be turned on by your admin
Is there a way to still see your students while presenting/sharing your screen?
You should still be able to see the little thumbnails down the right side of your screen, but obviously, if you are presenting something you don't want to be on the Meet screen. So you would need two screens.

This new limit is 100 for G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education users. Standard G Suite Business and G Suite for Education editions will still be limited 50 participants.
Can I save the video when I am finished so I can post to my students who could not attend?
You need Enterprise to be able to do this. Google have made this free to all Edu accounts until July. This will show you how to do it. th-cam.com/video/98GZL-uDsUs/w-d-xo.html
If it isn't there, you will need to get your IT dept to turn it on.
how many persons can join this in a meeting
Idk if there is a way, but is the host able to disable chat? If the host can, can you please tell me how? My teacher wants to disable chat on Google Meet.

For Meet you need Education or Business accounts. The alternative is to use hangouts.google.com
If I am the scheduler, how do I begin the meeting when I set it up in Google Calendar?
Open the calendar entry and the link is in there (this is assuming that conferencing was turned on - this is automatic when inviting guests)
Can you see everyone at the same time or one at a time?

You just need to turn off your camera. The icon is at the bottom of the screen next to the hang up icon.

In Meet you can't see anything that the user doesn't allow you to. You would need to share your screen for another person to see it.

Is there a way to cancel a Google Meet? I am a teacher and I do not want my students using the link to the meeting to meet unsupervised. I had set up a meeting at the wrong time and would like to cancel that meeting even though some students have already accepted the invitation.

It can be either. You can even just be on your own!
what is the pro of using this over zoom
My main feeling is how Meet integrates well with Google (saving recording to google drive), is secure to my domain, good layout, very easy to join a call. I like the idea of rooms in Zoom although never been in a position to need this in my meetings, and could probably fake it by creating more Meet "rooms". There are lots of websites that offer comparisons.

How can you schedule it ahead of time, and invite your students... and how will they see the invite?
Use calendar invites, you would need to add the students as guests in the invite.

Do you mean a Chrome extension or the Meet app? There isn't an official Meet extension that I'm aware of. The app can be installed at the App Store (Apple) or Google Play Store (Android).

I have been teaching online for the last 7 weeks and I am, and more importantly my students are, so annoyed that Google Hangout Face-time is no longer working. This was a fantastic format to address individual teaching issues and to allow the students to work in groups. As Google Meet cannot be generated by the students they cannot work in groups without the teacher setting up the Meet. This has been a real disappointment.
Is there a way to use a green screen with meets?
I'm not aware of any way, especially live. Perhaps if you recorded you could use the recording in a green screen app.
Due to Covid-19 I take classes via Google Meet.When I want to switch on my camera,it worked once and now it's just stuck saying camera is starting.It's not my camera's problem since it works with other apps.Any ideas on how I can fix this??
I would go into the Settings (bottom right corner) and see if switching the camera there has any effect.

Not at the moment. You could change the Meeting name which means the old link wouldn't be valid.
Is there an option how teachers can keep an eye on the students while they're taking quiz test on google classroom? (you know to ensure no one cheats)
Not with Google Meet. If you use Google Classroom you could see what they are typing but they could have other tabs open. There is exam software out there to do all that.

This may depend on how many people are on the call. Because the screen you share is technically you too, it also may deprioritise your camera shot.

@@philipwest2551 if people not invited to the meeting try and join using the code, then the host has to admit them. This is the only way of controlling it.

No, you need Google Education or Enterprise. With a normal Gmail account you can use Hangouts. You can join Meet sessions without a Google account.
What is the max number of video participants in Google meet? in Hangout it is about 26 or so

When I tested this, if you share your screen and you are showing the video on the screen then it showed for others but the sound didn't come through. There may be ways to get it to work but it may contravene copyright.
