  • Hello again everyone, today I will be building Tamiya's 1/48th scale B-339 Brewster Buffalo in service to the RAF in the early 1940's Pacific Theater.
Though an older of Tamiya's aircraft kits, the fit is sublime and the details are perfectly adequate for the average modelers purposes, although the addition of photoetch, resin, or good old-fashioned hand detailing would be necessary for those of you who demand a bit more out of your models.
As with everything from this run of builds, I selected one major thing to try and work on in this project, and for this one it was free-handing camouflage. I have a decent history with some elements of this- see my 1/72nd scale Bf-109E, FW-190, and FW-200 for examples- I haven't really worked much with free-handing more than these random mottling. So this became a vehicle to experiment with that, and I am quite satisfied with the result. Free-handing camouflage isn't the easiest thing for a beginner to attempt, but if you are learning how to airbrush it is an eventual essential step, and you will be amazed how much more life you can get into your model with these organic feathered edges.
I liked the bones of this kit enough that I think I will be getting another one- the Buffalo has always been one of my favorite fighter planes from WWII, it just has such unique pugilistic aesthetics. I don't love how it looks in the RAF scheme, however; my next one is almost certainly going to be Finnish, with those striking schemes and flashes of bright blue.

A couple of things today- Unless I have the videos READY TO GO- like whenever I start releasing my Grumman project- I am NEVER PROMISING SCHEDULES AGAIN lol. I have viscously and embarrassingly failed what I put forward in the Raiden video.
That being said, (and this is NOT any sort of promise), one of my aims for 2022-2023 is to be able to put out a monthly video, and given what I have in various stages of almost-completion that is entirely possible. This channel is effectively being reactivated at least for the year after having basically been dead for the last two.
Finally, I apologize for the dead air around the 5-6 minute mark. I don't really care about copyright in these videos because I've never been monetized and barring something like a Patreon or sponsorships I don't really plan to be, but that lack of concern ends when the copyrightholders start messing with things in a way more adverse than just monetizing my video. In this case, UMG has monetized the video AND blocked it from all sorts of things I like to be able to do like embedding because of a play of Grenadiers Fife and Drum that they apparently own. Though the silence is jarring, I decided to mute this segment so I can hopefully be able to embed and share this video as usual.
He 162 video will be out sometime in May, and then idk what the schedule will be after that but you may want to hit the notification button- I'm going to be fairly active this year.
As usual ask questions about the build in the comments and I'll help as best I can, or shoot me an email if your question is larger / not related to this project.

Non era il miglior aereo della seconda guerra mondiale, ma di sicuro era il più bello!!!!

My goal is to make this not a dead channel again, lol. Goal is monthly uploads again, at least for the next year or so.

Good job, I've never even seen one of these Tamiya kits (there's a Special Hobby one in the stash somewhere) so was surprised to se raised panel lines, giving away it's age. The fact that there's no flash evident is testament to the quality of the moulding tooling. Nice catch on the instrument coming before fitting the windscreen/canopy. As for colors, it's worth remembering that US built aircraft supplied to the UK were painted with the nearest US equivalent paint color and consequently the pigment formulations would look and weather differently to the paints manufactured in the UK.

Oh, that is interesting regarding the paints. I just assumed they shipped in primer and the customer painted them.

I think this is one of those kits that almost everyone has built or has in their stash, and it's easy to see why, it's a very fun little mode, and still holds up :) I really liked the layers you added to the colors in the cockpit section, that really added a great tone to all the instruments inside. XF-81 is a frustrating color as it's not labelled properly. It was made up for the release of the Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire Mk IXe, and it should have been labelled 1943. That being said I think that it still looks really great on the completed model, and is possible out of place from the Dark Earth. Which I also agree with you is not an RAF color, but one Tamiya oddly kept suggesting up until their new Mk.I Spitfire.

Love the Canadian tune for an American plane. Very amusing.

Song selection generally follows customer, not producer. Commonwealth service. It's all basically the same thing lol.

Had a lot of fun building this kit about a year ago.Of course I couldnt help adding the PE cockpit set and some extra engine detail.
And then I totally forgot to install the joystick. - facepalm -

something something forest for the trees lol!
I was mostly surprised how *enjoyable* this build was. If I ignored how long it took me to paint things the actual construction just flew together- the amount of detail they managed to cram into so few pieces is commendable.

It is amazing how this old biscuit holds up after so long-an original superkit. Top colors actually look pretty close. But the bottom should be black/white.
Anyhow it looks great. PS for a Finnish Brewster you need a conversion kit. Nose/engine is different.

Thanks for the tip regarding the engine, I'll have to start looking for one.
I'm somewhat frustrated if the black / white underside is true- someone should tell Tamiya that, they call out XF-21 in the instructions.

What conversions need to be done to make this an accurate B-239, Finnish Buffalo?

I don't know, I Haven't looked into it yet. Another commenter said that the cowling and engine have to change.

Malaya should have had about 300 nodern aircraft for defence. But due to the war in the west they didnt come
So RAF had to make due and had Buffalos delivered in crates which technicians then assembled.. ( serving in Bekize in 1980s Harriers were delivered in same way and re-assembled on site )
RAF pilots didnt like the Buffalos and the attrition rate was bad. It wss considered near suicide to even take off in one let alone engage superior Japanese planss flown by veterans of war in China.

I try to keep them, but at time of recording they were still something of a precious resource.
