Always enjoy your videos Kyle! There's no ego, no "this is the only way" or stuff like that... I think that's what draws so many to the channel. Consistently good content, but it's down to earth and practical. Thanks man!!
I often find focusing on another medium helps to both give me a break and keep that creative momentum up when I'm experiencing burnout with my photography. Sometimes putting down the camera and picking up a pen allows you to see things in a whole new way.
You slogging through inhospitable weather: inspiring… and maintaining your vision for Slate City. Using a TLR in the rain: do I “need” an umbrella hat?. So dorky! Your dedication is humbling. Ansel Adams’ quote: thx. Ditto that 95:5 rule.
I use to practice portrait photography, I did so for eight years and in those eight years I photographed a lot of faces, recieved a lot of criticism I wasn't ready to accept this was because back then in my youth I was egotistical. I never really listened to anyone and then It became apparent that I was burnt out of my wits. So I went on a seven year hiatus, and it was only this year that my love for photography reemerged. All the skills I thought I had now seem irrelevant, watching your videos helped put things into perspective and I thank you for that. I've been relearning photography with an open mind and I love it.
I completely agree with everything. Any time I get stuck in a creative rut, I try to push myself to do something different. In reality it doesn't always work but does get me out shooting again and then I get that one singular image that sparks joy and reinvigorates me again. I'm known among my friends for not being "the guy who shoots X" and not sticking to any one thing, so I don't have the problem of feeling tied to a particular bit of subject matter. Instead I have the opposite problem where I find myself feeling like I'm overdoing something if I stick with it for too long. Great video as always!
Honest opinion and only saying this hoping it will help, I belive that the video footage looked better than the B&W photos. The mood, the atmospheric and also the faded colors were something really special.
Kyle, I have been following you for a while now, and I think this is some of your best work. Your "realities" are so common sense yet they seem to get lost in the noise. I have to say, one of your implicit or maybe understated lessons of the last few videos is to use the tools that best position you to succeed. (I'm talking now about the digital camera - I can't even imagine changing film in those conditions!). Best wishes on your journey and keep bringing us along for the ride. ps. from my own experience, life is easier in Canada, come back home one day. :)
Thanks Kyle. I am definitely right in the middle of #2. Really tough time for me creatively but I do still continue to get out as much as time will allow. Even though I already knew that I am not the only photographer to go thru these times, its still nice to hear I'm not alone. Keep up the vision.
Such a great video.. Loved the tone, the mood and the advice to give.. In a sense it was a beautiful composition, the scenes you shot, the rain, the slight music in the background and the topics you addressed. Thank you!
Thank you. I really appreciate that. And I agree, I think it's important to connect and relate with other creatives. Just to know that we all share similar challenges.
I find inspiration sometimes moves from one medium to another. I often use music or painting as a way to inspire and break from photography ...and vice versa. The balance varies throughout the year (or years), but the creative spirit is always there.
Thanks for doing these big guy. When your pushing to make work more professional or to follow a creative path, these types of videos help me see the bigger picture and push through the hard days. Keep them going.
Only just discovered your channel, great content. Will look forward to following you future vlogs. In the meantime I will visit your back catalogue. Straightforward, honest and uncomplicated.
You mentioned something really important, first I finally heard on watching TH-cam videos on photography. That is, about making videos to please yourself and not making them to please an audience. That is an extremely important point. Other photographers give you the impression you job is to please your audience. I recently took a photo of birches in fog. To me it was one of my best ever photos. I posted on Facebook. The viewer, a family member, commented about being tired of not seeing the sun for a long time. Fortunately, I don’t feel the need to be praised by someone ignorant of photography. Anyway, first time I saw videos by you but I will keep looking for me. Interesting, and well done!
The photos in your video are really great! The scenery looks so beautiful and the camera work is really impressive. I'm really impressed by how you managed to capture the weather so well in your shots. It really adds to the overall feel of the video. ✌
Good points in your video. To avoid loosing interest, I change my style of photography frequently: shooting panoramas for a while, then doing half frame image stories, then pinhole photography, then shooting only Holga cameras for a while and so on. That way I always feel I’m doing new and exciting.
However many likes this video ever gets, they're not enough. The photography is beautiful. Yet the wisdom shared through process observation and tutelage are treasures indeed. Thank you, Kyle. Sincerely...thank you.
The GFX100s produces such wonderful sharp images. Shooting in b&w would be my lean to I feel while using it. Excellent work, Kyle. I recently purchased a Fujica GSW690. Like yourself I like to work with digital and film.
@KyleMcDougall I am seriously considering purchasing one. OR an X-Pan. Imagine that, so yes I'm a little torn! What bothers me is the fear of having (TX-1) repaired should it stop working. I'm planning a road trip from my home here in Florida, and west to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah etc. I know you have photographed here. And I need to look at your work on YT. Very excited about this and adding to my portfolio.
Kyle, your videos are always inspiring. But this one really spoke to me. Thanks for your 3 points. Now it’s clear for me - I’m at point one 😄 Greetings from snowy ❄️ Ottawa! 🇨🇦
Wow this video was very motivating, I’m finally getting back into photography and just ordered an xt4 & I want to get healthy so it looks like I’m hiking a lot with my xt4.
Another great film Kyle, thank you. I’ve experienced all of these things at various times and a few years on (photography is my second career) I’m only just learning the part about being true to myself. I’ve tried to over-think my subject matter and style/voice numerous times and it’s become obvious (sometimes after only a day doing the work 😂) that it just isn’t ‘right’. I’m now more settled in creating a body of work that I enjoy (and which ironically has been under my nose for 2 years while I was thinking of other stuff to do). I’ve also gained quite a bit by simplifying my kit and swapping out my main digital camera for an older, less advanced model but which I enjoy using more. And I too switch between that and film. Cheers Kyle, keep it up 👍🙏
Cheers, Ben. Glad to hear that things are becoming clear for you. It definitely takes time. I spent the last two years (basically ever since I moved to the UK) back in the discovery phase. Trying to find out what I wanted to create. And that brought with it a bunch of failure, trying to force things from my previous work. It's all about experimenting, and pushing forward, and eventually things start to reveal themselves. There's no shortcuts.
Great Vid Kyle and well done on surviving the Welsh weather (must seem so far removed from the warm US scenes that you shoot). I was at that location during the first release from Covid 1 for a photoshoot for Blundstone Boots and ended up getting lost, It was nearly midnight by the time we found our way down - scary!!
Oh no! That's no fun. Yeah, the weather can change so quick in these places and I can see how it'd be easy to get disoriented. Also, just bought my second pair of Blundstones... favourite boots by far! 🙌
`That's the reality of being a creative,' beautifully said Kyle. So, is it worth it? When the arid times come we can take a break and take stock of what it is that motivates us. Hence a break can be a very positive thing. It might be that photography has served its purpose and its time to move on and that's O.K. Life's a journey. It might be the motivation is still there but inspiration is missing. Like, the thing itself is still good but it's not giving me good feelings anymore. What's happened? I think there's a lesson here. Is being creative going to bring world peace? No, of course not. O.K then; is the creative process still worth it? If the answer is yes, then keep going. Your motivation is now more pure than it was before and you will be the stronger for it.
Cheers, Tony. For me, it's absolutely worth it. Often, photography is almost just a vehicle for experience, connection, and introspection. And of course, our relationship with a creative pursuit will have its ebbs and flows. It'll be different for all of us. :)
Thank you! I've only been using their B&W presets as of recently, so I can't comment too much. But I've enjoyed these ones, and the little bit of experimenting that I've done with their colour presets has been good.
Another awesome video! Also How does your camera bag hold up in the rain? Im looking to get the compagna because it seems to fit my needs, but i need my bag to hold up in wet conditions!
Excellent video Kyle, the path you walked up past the ruined church was unfamiliar to me, I take it you were near Llanberis but could you give me some idea where exactly you were as I am intrigued. Well done for not breaking/water-logging any kit. 🙂
Hey Kyle, thanks for the info. I do know the area vaguely (through mountain-biking years ago) so I'll look it up again and note it down for a photo trip in the future. Thanks for the info.

Absolutely. It's important to take a break, and also just to make sure you have other creative pursuits to keep you busy at times as a change of pace.
Your channel is easily my favorite. The quality of the videos and the content! It's just amazing man. Thanks for making these!

The image at 3.18 is big print stuff. And the GFX gives you all the MPXLS you need for that. Superb shot Kyle.
Thank you, Morris. I was quite happy with that one!
thank you for these valuable insides, Kyle! Loved the moody photos you've created this time - this weather conditions make such a huge difference..

Hey Steve, I approached from the south, out of Tanygrisiau. There's a parking lot there where the trail starts. It's a great area to explore.

Thanks, Jonny. This was mostly the Fuji 14mm 2.8.
@@KyleMcDougall Thank you again! ❤️
Great video mate. Can you see the 35-70 being a long term lens? Or do you have your eye on others?
Thanks, Bernie. As for the 35-70, absolutely. I bought it as it's nice and compact which is great for hiking, and then the range of it is perfect for what I do. I'm also not after a fast lens for most of the work that I do. Optically I've found it to be great so far. I do have the 32-64 here on loan from MPB, which I'll be reviewing and comparing soon. I also like how your videos are original and focused on teaching rather than just getting the most views per video.
Thanks,

Hey Seth, just want to say thanks for this comment. Honestly, it means a lot to hear that. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know!

Wise words Kyle. I feel confident now in shooting my year long project of brick walls. I'm joking by the way.
