Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Every gripe people have with the BMPCC4K are just standard differences between a video camera and a cinema camera. By cinema camera standards, what the Pocket 4K gives you for the price is INSANE. Modern RAW codec straight to generic SSD media?! It’s a cinema camera that doesn’t have thousand-dollar accessories needed just to run it.
I’ve done the “auto expose” thing with the Pocket 4K in post, similar to what the electronic ND might do for you. Just duplicate your clip to a new track above your original, change the ISO on the new clip to compensate the exposure, and cross-fade between the two exposures. It’s magical.

Good one bro! I own both the fs5 ii and bmpcc4k and feel the same way. I Love the BMPCC4K!! I am not selling thou. I think the fs5ii shines in run and gun documentary and broadcast field of work. bmpcc4k wil certainly get the same job done but with a little more love put into it. But for full productions like shorts, musicvideo's and such hands down for the bmpcc4k. Liked and subbed ! thanks for your take on the topic!

Good glass will stay good optically, I guess, but the advances in AF will require lenses to match. (And yes, I proudly use AF for interviews. DPAF on my C200 is insanely smooth and accurate. Practically fool-proof. I wouldn't trust it with older third party lenses, however.)

Thanks for your review. As an owner of the original FS5, that camera has served me extremely well, and has paid for itself many times over. The built-in ND filter, form factor and XLR inputs have been extremely valuable for my corporate work. That said, I agree that my Shogun Inferno adds bulk and I wish the camera could shoot 4K 10 bit internal. I have also struggled with Sony color science, and actually prefer shooting V-Log on my Panasonic GH5. The GH5's portability and IBIS are features that the FS5 lack, so it serves a different purpose. I am intrigued by the BMPC4k, especially for the price, but for me I don't see it as the next step forward from my FS5. I want my next camera to have better low light performance, and my experience with the GH series cameras has me wanting to stay with Super35 or possibly full frame for my next video camera. I shoot a lot of interviews, typically with a phantom powered mic and wireless lav, and the BMPCC4k is OK, but not as practical as the FS5. Then there's the hassle of adding ND filters....ugh, that would be a hard one to give up. Rigging up the BMPCC4k and struggling with audio and ND filters takes some of the excitement out of it for me, but the image quality is still very appealing. As always, there is no perfect camera...
Q: Did you give consideration to Black Magic's Ursa Mini Pro before buying the BMPCC4k? Seems like that could have been a logical FS5 replacement for corporate work, but I'm not sure if that would compliment your business.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your views on this. I'd love to see some of your finished work shot on the camera.

One of the few times a talking head video has held my attention for that long. Great job, man. Liked and subscribed. In terms of the Pocket 4K's specs (and all the points you've touched on), it's def a no brainer especially at that price point. The only issue I personally have with that camera is the new Sony sensor. To my eyes, the image quality doesn't have the same cinematic texture of the Fairchild sensor found in the OG Blackmagic Cinema Cameras. The digital overbite in my opinion is very similar to say a GH5s or Sony A7s. It's one of the main reasons I chose a BMMCC instead.

We use RED Epic, RED Weapon, and Alexa classic cameras in our production company. We also do a lot of corporate cinema look interviews. We recently added a BM PCC 4K for B-Cam on interviews. Typically we use the Alexa for A-Cam so in Resolve we are cutting and grading between these two cameras and we were surprised to learn the PCC cuts better with the Alexa than the REDs do!! I also love that I can plop a Tentacle on the PCC and maintain lip sync with the Alexa and the RED on Stedicam. And as you said being able to stick a Samsung 512GB SSD USB-C drive on the side of the PCC is killer. Great little cam.

    AuteurTheory.tv here...
Love the Blackmagic pocket cinema 4k. Compared to Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k (G1) and the original Ursa which I own, this will be the main camera I bring out.. I think. I’m still contemplating returning it if I can not resolve the issue of instability between my brand new .71x metabones adapter and my Zeiss ZE glass. Makes me worried about renting larger lenses without lens support...but I have the full tilta cage with rods so I can get that and hopefully that resolves it. My biggest problem is that it crops so much even with the metabones speedbooster. And it’s incredibly hard to achieve the same handheld movements that I was able to with the Ursa Mini Pro which is quite heavier especially once my v-mount battery is attached. I brought my out for a quick test..using my 35mm Zeiss ZE lens with a really dope setup using Tilta arms/hand-grips and the Tilta nucleus m follow-focus hand-grips (DM if anyone is interested in pics of that setup)..to maximize handheld stability with multiple touch points and comfortable positioning. I just felt that it was so hard to walk or slowly move..
I’ve seen Tom Antos’ recommendation to stabilize in post but that is something I don’t compromise. I also don’t want a MFT lens with built-in image stabilization because I prefer EF lenses.
I don’t think the smaller gimbals give a good look for more than tiny sweeps - personally I think it looks low-budget..too robotic and Not enough natural parallax and most obviously tough control over vertical shock and using the ronin-s and similar smaller gimbals doesn’t work with ez-rigs with serene arms..I also come from a place of doing things at the highest production level (high budget commercials with Alexa’s, reds, and phantoms)
I want to try the metabones .64x (or .62, I forgot).
Having no built-in ND also sucks
With aIl that said, if I could get a good price and get rid of my 2 Ursas, I would probably like this camera a lot more. Great advice - get rid of bodies while they’re still relevant.
If I sound like I’m all over the place, I am..because I need to get some really nice natural handheld shots with this with enough natural stability before I can really truly love it. Sry for any typos..
Your insight is great, glad to see people with a similar mindset. Subscribed!

I was wondering if you could answer a question. I currently have the A7sii and was planning on selling it when the A7siii is announced. I've gained a lot of experience with shooting cinema quality video and color correcting and grading images so I was wondering if you think it would be smart to sell the A7sii now and buy a pocket cinema camera instead. My only worries are A.) The much smaller sensor will be hard to deal with and will limit my lens options B.) The A7siii might be a huge step in the pro-sumer market and will end up outshining the pocket 4k. I would love to hear any opinions since you have experience with both brands.

    • @FlashFilmAcademy
      @FlashFilmAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Once the a7siii is anounced the a7sii market will be dead in the water. Only because it's such a huge upgrade in image quality, codecs, bit depth/rate and battery life. Sell your camera asap. The Bmpcc4k will more than hold you. It offers 12-bit NOW when we're still praying we'll get 10bit from the new camera. The color science is so good! I had micro four thirds all wrong it's a GREAT lens system that can adapt to almost any lens mount. (Other than e-mount yet). Plus you should have NO problems moving a BMPCC4k in a year.

Great video and as an fs5ii owner I've been eyeing that camera as well but I have a few issues with your argument:
    1. The fs5ii should not be used as a 4k camera. yes, if you compare the 4k 8bit to say an 6500 or 7iii then yes, it's not that great. But I ONLY shoot 1080p 10bit 422 and that image is way better than any of the consumer Sony cameras. I've owned all of them. The value of the fs5ii is the 1080p 10bit 422 in a easy to use light codec. Even the c200 doesn't offer that. For event shooting, corporate gigs this is really valuable especially when you include ergonomics and functionality.
    2. With the speed booster and vintage lenses and even L series lenses the image I get out of the fs5ii is really filmic and cinematic actually. It's basically a full frame, 10bit 422 image which that's really hard to find in the marketplace. I've tried comparing it to the a7iii, a canon 1DC (8bit 422 Clog) and the fs5ii image was better in both cases.
    3. There's a lot gigs in LA where the producers are looking for FS shooters specifically. Those gigs alone pay for the camera and make it relevant. I haven't seen any jobs looking for BMPCC4k, URSA Mini yes, but not BMPCC and that's because at the end of the day it's not a PRO camera, and even if I do end up buying one to try out, I don't feel comfortable making it my workhorse. I've heard of a lot of issues with BM cameras and have been warned about it from BM owners.
    4. The fs5ii kills in run in gun Doc style shooting. When I need Ultimate image quality on a short film or commercial, I would just rent an Alexa or Red anyways.
    5. Everyone is talking about "when the a7siii comes out" like it's some magical unicorn. We'll probably all be dead by the time they release it anyways lol. And I don't think they are gonna have internal variable ND also.
All that being said, I def see the appeal of that camera and can't wait to get my hands on one, especially since I want to switch to Resolve and stop paying Adobe every damn month. I just don't expect it to replace my fs5ii just yet...

Couldn’t disagree more about all the other Sony cameras vs the FS5 Mkii for image quality. You may be using yours without an Inferno but that’s the only way I ever record anything with mine and I will say that the FS5mkii with the atomos inferno is miles past the A6300 or any of the A7cameras in every category except low light. The skin tones, overall color, highlight rolloff, file gradability, slow motion capability and overall X factor look/feel of the image is so much better it’s laughable. I look back on shoots I did with an A7s mkii which is basically unusable in SLog3 because the shadow noise, and the image is completely hit or miss, the way it renders color is terrible. If you’re in a well controlled scene you can get it to a good place but I always felt like I was fighting it to get there. With the FS5 mkii, the color accuracy is incredibly spot on, skin tones come to life I think for the first time ever, better than canon cameras and if you ever tried shooting a commercial project in cdng the image quality is jaw dropping. I’ve shot a ton on the Canon C300/100, EVA 1, GH series, A7 series, and the FS7 mki and ii. The best overall cameras of that bunch, the ones that are great to work with and produce great images are the FS5mkii with a shogun, and the canon Cinema cameras followed by the FS7’s. The FS5 mkii and Shogun has the best slow motion options of the bunch. 240fps continuous in 2k, 60fps continuous in 4K, and 120fps bursts in 4K and you can shoot any of those in 12 bit raw in cdng, pro res raw, pro res, or DxhHr. The EVA 1 beats the FS5 mk ii and Shogun on paper in some categories but I’ve shot the two side by side and I personally prefer the image from the Sony. Not to mention the EVA sucks to work with in a lot of ways, especially going to 60fps, it’s a 3 step menu process. That’s just embarrassing.
Now, being one who recently bought the black magic pocket 4K. I have to say the image is better than any other camera on that list. I also prefer using braw files over any other file type now. It’s amazing what it can do, absolutely amazing. It has made me wonder if I should do the same thing and sell my FS5 to get a couple black magic cameras. Maybe an ursa mini pro? I’m not quite there yet, as the black magic pocket has its own drawbacks that the FS5mk ii and Shogun compliment really well.
Thanks for your video and the time you put into it, you make a lot of great points.

I just want to emphasis on a few facts for a moment. A lot of true statements are being made in this video; the Sony FS5 isn't amazing at low light and 4k isn't an option without expensive external equipment. But the truest statement comes at 11:00 Cinema cameras are exactly that, they are a brush to paint amazing pieces of art. The truth of the matter is that the Sony FS5 is still an amazing tool that will put you above and beyond what a DSLR will if you put the time in during post-production. And that is what we all need to remember; as photographers and cinematographers, we have a bad habit of letting our "what if I had that" button get pressed every single time something new and flashy arises, but the bottom line is that the quote "The FS5 will be dead" is an utter lie because the standard format in the cinema industry is 1080p at 24fps and will remain 1080p at 24fps until we optimize how data is transferred and displayed.
Only 16% of consumers worldwide possess a television or a monitor to even watch the 3840 × 2160 at 240hz; the optimal true 4k picture. And even more so; only 3% of the content is created in this format because the data size is so large that you need to store the raw footage on its own hard drive. I am talking 50gb + per 6min clip. The truth is that, as amazing as 4k is to see in its true format, it is still a long way from being a viable industry standard; thus your Sony FS5 is still going to be leading the industry because it produces an amazing image that needs little post-production to achieve the look you are seeking.
I believe the point of this video is to say that, despite there being a niche market for 4k; big companies are going to expect this because they are retarded and don't understand the industry standard, and for this reason and only for this reason, upgrading and taking advantage of the market is easier money than to educate your client and produce similar amazing content that everyone can see in its true format.
If you have a big corporate client who demands the 4k cinema quality; then, by all means, invest in that 4k at 12bit. The FS5 electronic ND filters are amazing when shooing sports outside. It’s hard to give that up. But as I think about the key points about bit rates, colors and the old sensor you have me sold. So I sold it and bought a used some of the funds to buy a hobbyist FS5 and I love it to death. I'm a romanticist. For me the form factor is like your classic 16mm cameras. This is a semi pro movie camera (to me). Incredibly fun to create mini features with. The BMPCC has some great features but it doesn't have that classic feel the FS5 inspires - form factor is too DSLR-ey. Of course it's great for low cost film making. For me though if I'm doing any professional work I'll hire Alexa's. For fun and experimentation, I use the FS5 which I intend to keep as a classic camera for a long time.

Image quality could be very subjective; some older cameras can produce better images than newer ones. Some people prefer the "look" produced by the BMD Cinema Camera 2.5k over the Ursa Mini. There is something about the Arri Alexa, Panasonic Varicam and Blackmagic cameras that is hard for people to pinpoint but that they like when they see it. It's sometimes called the "Mojo" or "Special Sauce". For some reason the image quality from the Sony FS5 never wowed me. I've seen more pleasant images from the a7iii/a7Riii.

Here’s how the camera game goes:
    -Canon EOS M50 $500
-Panasonic GH5 (great for run&gun, shitty high ISO)
    -BMPCC4K $1.300 (1.89x crop, not great for run&gun best for under 2.000)
-Panasonic GH5s $2.300 (best video cam for under 10.000 bucks, reliable, great high ISO, great image especially in Log, good codecs, multi-aspect sensor 1.89x crop with native 4:3 with 2x anamorphic support)
-Canon C300 mk.II $10.000 (Does it all: narrative, run&gun, good low light, amazing body with build in NDs, great codecs, usable AF)
All of these cameras, other than the M50 can take XLRs without to much of a hustle.
After these camera we’re talking studio narrative films so you’re looking at Alexa’s or cellulite film.
And remember all cameras after the GH5 are so good that they don’t define the look anymore the artist does.

@@markgeorgeff9816 My set up goes the whole way: Ursa Mini Pro + SSD recorder + Shoulder mount + Viewfinder. Fair amount of money but worth every cent to me. Actual footage wouldn't do any good since its common ENG work (rec 709 bullcrap). What I absolutely love about the Mini Pro is the menu. You don't have various profiles like with most other manufactures where every profile skips some options. Like when you go for windowed sensor (needed to avoid the black circle when using lenses designed for smaller sensors like the broadcast stuff = B4 mount which I use) I think ALL other companies restrict you codec wise in that mode - not Black Magic. Only when you go for high frame rate the sensor WILL BE windowed with the Ursa. Having the option to change mount and run any whatsoever lens manufacturer was a major point for me. Adjusting backfocus with the shim kit for the B4 lenses was some hassle but ... not enough not to do it. :)
I usually don't go above 1080p and with the high-end codecs you get with the Ursa there's no worries. All the stupid 4K babbling is worthless anyway. Made a test and zoomed in in post about 300% and didn't got any quality loss worth worrying about thanks to ProRess HQ or Black Magic Raw. Having SSDs is also very comfortable.
Would have liked to show some real footage but some pigshit Win10 update for some reason wracked my external drives and corrupted all data.

Don’t go from the 80d to the 90d you’ll be rebuying the same camera (unless you need a 2nd angle)

Also the bmpcc has a video mode so you don’t have to color grade. You don’t get the best results but still better than a dslr

But I need to learn how to color correction and greasing and I don't need big files or prores raw right now HD 10 bit 4-2-2 with Technicolor is all I need.

Great points. I feel the same way. I love my a6500 but after it shut down three times due to overheating on my last job i purchased a BMPCC 4K. Already off the bat I’m loving the easy menus.

Awesome video. You are right on the money. Man your audio sounds awesome on this, what mic are you using for these videos?

@@FlashFilmAcademy Thanks. I love that mic. Did you record directly into the Pocket 4K with it? Even though you gotta crank up the gain on the Pocket4k, I find the audio quality to be very clean and natural sounding. Better than the Ursa Mini Pro or the G2.

Yes that mic is going into the XLR port

How does the BMPCC do with talking head interviews when the subject is bobbing and weaving (like they always do)? Shall I magically pull focus while engaging with my subject? Should I hire a focus-puller and pass the cost on to the client? Shall I lock down to f11 and try not to ask myself why I'm not shooting with my trusty XF705? Enquiring minds want to know.

Couldn't agree with you more. I bought the BMPC4K two weeks ago and it's a really great "CINEMA" camera as you have said. Compared to my GH5s(W/ the Ninja V), the BMPC4K has a more pleasing look at 60p and 24p. BRAW just works! I tested the C-Fast against the SSD USB-C and the C-Fast works at every speed and compression ratio....NICE! I'm still testing Davinci and it's a learning curve but it is one of the best features of this purchase. For the price, I plan on getting a second one soon...Great video, keep up the good work.

If you do mainly corporate videos, why would you need Raw? Id think the FS5 with it's efficient codec is more suitable for your type of video shooting.
