      Stephen, it's nearly impossible. The real answer is these are not good candidates for California as the state makes it very difficult. I don't believe they plan on giving this engine an EO number- so you would really build at risk.

      @@sujit3691 I didn’t change the gearing, I have 4.10 gears and it works well with my set up - 31” tires and the 6L80e. The 5.3 has more power and ability to get even more power with performance modifications. I like the diesel- it’s a good match and I get good fuel economy but the 5.3 doesn’t do too bad either. They both have good points - I think it may be a lot cheaper to do the 5.3 - but - I have never done one. It runs $15k to $35k to do the Cummins depending on how or who does it for you.

    • @gogop66
      @gogop66  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not a CA legal swap- price really depends on what you do- if you do all the work yourself and don’t replace major components like transmission etc - you can maybe get it all done for $12K to $15K. A full professional swap with all new components runs $25K to $40K

    So how happy are you after 2 years? Have you had any issues? What stall converter are you running? I know Cummins repower garage says they've had the best success with 2500 stall. That sounds a little high to me but I know they have done a lot of testing. Thank you 👍

    • @gogop66
      @gogop66  ปีที่แล้ว

      Still happy, however I would have gone a different way (more robust) cooling package. I tow with it and this little engine gets hot! I haven’t had any issues really to speak of- the 2500 stall speed is okay but feels like it’s pulling a bit at stop lights. What are you wanting to put it in?

    • @brianlee6849

      @@gogop66 I'm thinking about doing a Scout 2 project. Same transmission and engine. I would probably order the best aluminum radiator I could get for the space. The scouts had a 345 V8 so I think I should be fine on radiator but I'll remember what you said for sure. What's your ring and pinion gear? I'm thinking 4.10 with 33s 6L80. Thank you

    • @gogop66
      @gogop66  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianlee6849 Definitely get the biggest aluminum radiator you can fit, definitely build a really good shroud to maximize airflow and I would suggest getting a high volume mechanical fan that can move 5000 CFM. Cooling this little engine is the biggest issue that most people have, I started with an electric fan that was 1800 CFM in both my CJ7 and FJ62. For my CJ, which is much lighter and I don't tow with it still gets hot on very long grades. I has a huge aluminum radiator but it's just not enough. In the install videos they allude to a properly engineered cooling system but they don't really emphasize enough how much air needs to move to keep it cool. - I'm running original 4.10 gears with 31" tires on the FJ, for the 6L80e it's perfect. I would also be okay at 3.73's I think. My CJ is running 2.55's with 33" tires which equated to about 2050 RPMs and 70 MPH. The FJ is about 2200 RPMs at 70 MPH. This little engine has plenty of power for your Scout II - but I assume you'll have 33's or higher- so with that in mind DO go CRAZY with the cooling :D - Note: I have a dual fan "race" setup now that moves about 3700 CFM, those fans draw a shit ton of power and it's been a bit of a problem which is why I say go mechanical. A lot of builders now or doing mechanical fans to get more air. Let me know how it goes!

    • @brianlee6849
      @brianlee6849 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gogop66 Excellent advice 👍. What temp does it plateau at? Do you have a pyrometer? A pyrometer is the best way to control temp . I have driven long haul semi trucks since 89 and I always watch RPM vs boost vs pyrometer to find the sweet spot. For example right now I haul equipment up to 110,000 with a Paccar 510 horsepower 1850-ft lb torque it's sweet spot is 1400 to 1600 rpm while pulling grades go lower or higher it starts heating up. Gauges are everything for diesel. Thank you 👍

    • @brianlee6849
      @brianlee6849 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gogop66 You may also have a charge air cooler leak or to small. Air flow is extremely important to a diesel engine it can cause heat and drop in economy. Another reason for a pyrometer. I try to keep my pyro on big diesel below 900 above that water temperature starts climbing. Thank you 👍
