Cummins R2.8, ISF2.8 Engine Problems and Reliability
The ISF2.8 is built and assembled in China. Cummins says what the ISF2.8 engine has 300,000 miles (500,000 km) longevity. But in reality, this engine has a terrible reputation on the Asian market because of low-quality assembling and materials. The most common failure of this engine is a quick wearing of cylinder walls. As a result, increased oil consumption. The next problem is bad connecting rod bearings damaging a crankshaft. Besides that, the engine easily overheats. There is a high risk of coolant penetration inside cylinders. The list goes on and on. The ISF 2.8 engine meets Euro 3, Euro 4 emission standards, depending on modifications.
The R2.8 is built in the Cummins factory in Columbus, Indiana (500 engines in 2017) and carries a 90-day warranty only. They use engine blocks machined at Cummins’s Chinese plant. The crate R2.8 engine meets EPA’s Tier 0 (LDT 1 and 2) and Tier 1 emissions standards. In this case, it is suitable only for vehicles produced until 1999.

Hi pal, I have done an engine conversion in a rover metro using the vvc k series engine, and yeah I do agree with everything you said in this video. Practically my conversion was plug in play, Only difference was the engine loom had to be altered to run with the metro car loom. But the thing with that conversion, was the information, there was a hell of a lot of it conflicting. " you need to this, you need to do that, you need X,Y,Z, it wont line up correctly etc" Which starts getting silly if you start buying bits that you don't even need! This happened to me, and in the end me and my dad decided to it our own way. We found out that everything just bolted in, and lined up just like the replacement unit. People kept tight lipped on the wiring side of things, a couple of people did the wiring for you, again you had to pay. I found out later from a racing driver that had built a vvc metro, that there was only 6 earths to swop over on the donor loom to work with the main car loom. Which would have been a five min job to do! But the spending doesn't stop there though, you have to price up items that may go wrong too, I must have spent well over 20k on a conversion that people said all in for 5k! Buying twice, engine wise ( one was dud a long with a badly converted loom) then the cost of buying replacement parts and getting hold of replacement parts. The head gasket cost me over 1k to do, and that was me doing it. So when you decide to do a conversion, make sure there is proper support, parts are ready and easy to get hold of, and you are willing to stick with it, no matter what happens. Sometimes the price out weighs the enjoyment of the car, which happened to me, It came a money pit in the end, but I did have some enjoyment out of it, but not as much as I should have, but that boils done to buying twice and bad information. Would I go through it all again with a make of car? I am not sure if i could sadly. My last piece of advice is to try and see a converted car in person ( good one) and ask questions.

Thank you for the video, I have been considering doing this exact thing but am doing the research. I live in the States and a company in New Mexico who does Rover restorations are charging about $25,000 USD for the conversion on Discoverys and Range Rovers. Cummins used them as a Beta tester on installations. I have located a Defender 90 in pretty good condition, with a rebuilt 300 TDI ) miles on it for the same price here. I'm not sure this information is of use to anyone but thought I would share. Rover parts are not that difficult to find, of course, I live just south of the Canadian border.

I,m glad that I put an 200Tdi in my 110 15 years ago, never had any big problems, but there again I don't make any big demands so a 200 suits me down to the ground. If people thought things through like you are doing regarding fitting an optional engine, there wouldn't be so many abandoned projects knocking about. You must think of your own words and advice that you gave last year,--- KEEP TO BOG STANDARD ---- Keep the videos coming Mike, they are so valuable as they can stop people making mistakes that could cost them a lot of money. Hi Mike, When I bought my first RRC some thirty years ago It was a 1970 fitted with a York six diesel ( very bad starting in winter /not too good in summer ) I changed it for a Perkins 3ltr Good stating loads of power ( very noisy ) the main problem with both of these set ups was getting every day spares, I would go fords for the engine, The question would always be the same what van is it in ? Oh they don't list a RRC in my book !!! the same with Perkins, Back in those days I ran my own lorry so had a few contacts in the diesel world but still a nightmare, Then I fitted a VM 2.5 ex factory all the parts were there to be had and they fit, It's now in it's 2nd RRC and 300,000 miles it's due to be replaced with a ( yes you already know ) 300 TDI, One final point is what happens when you sell it on , Do you write a small book on what came from where.
Looking forward to the RRC 300tdi you are going to do, You lead I'll follow I know I'll be in safe foot steps.

Speaking from experience, having done around 8 engine swaps on American, Asian stuff. If you don't get most of it for free it's not worth it. As a hobby guy, with all the tools, the know how, and some financial resources I can tell you you either get so sick of it by the time you are done or you run into a road block that's really tough to get around. The resale value is usually about zero as well. With that said, I have a D1 with a 300TDI that I love. If I was going to do another one I would use a late model Toyota 4 cyl gas motor, trans and Tcase and factory Toyota electrics.

  • @davidwoods80

I was excited to hear of the Cummins project, but then I did the same research you did. Hmmm. An old Land Rover mechanic with decades of experience once said "keep 'em stock" and avoid glitzy mods that make for trouble. *That guy was YOU, Mike!* That being said, if you were to make patterns of all the pieces you have to fabricate, perhaps you could recoup the cost by selling a complete "swap in a box" for people with more money than skill. Otherwise, I just don't see it worth your time and investment -- though we'd all enjoy watch you sort through the challenges...

Where I'm at State side the cheapest I have seen being able to source a TDi motor is around 3k for a non reman and 8k for a reman. So as a third option I'm planning out a kit to install a 4.3L Vortec V6. The Costs of rebuilding a rover V8 from top liners to new bearings and redo the transmission (it needs a rebuild as well). The Vortec weighs close to the TDI, makes more power then a 4.6L and used cheaper fuel 87 vs Diesel or 93, and spares everywhere. The R2.8 is a novelty motor for hobbyists.

If you were doing a frame- up restoration where you built a compelete drive train (engine/transmission/differentials/drive shafts/axels) matched to the engine, I might consider this Cummins. I suspect if there were enough intrest in the UK for this engine it might be sold directly through an importer and therefore reduc/eliminate shipping costs??

Get the lion kit for the 300TDI.
Here in Brazil, because Ford bought Land Rover, they used the 300TDI 2.5 diesel to design their own engine. They came up with the 2.8 Powerstroke.
Só, bore out the cylinders a bit, buy the 2.8 Powerstroke crank, rods, and pistons, and then when you put it back in your Defender it’s plug and play. No adaptors, nada!!!!!!
When my engine blows, I’m putting in the 2.8 kit.

    • @BritannicaRestorations

Britannica Restorations Ltd yes, but in the US under $500 (maybe more) the stuff arrives without taxes. Britcar does well. Use Royal Mail and it’s even cheaper.
Any Rover parts place in the US is charging 800% on their parts.
Your time is worth much more...rebuild the 300TDI and then don’t adapt anything.
The kit is made here in Brazil, then shipped to the U.K., then market up. You could buy directly from Brazil.

      I just bought a full vehicle - 2005 GMC Jimmy 5 speed 4x4 for C$800 - V6 petrol 285 bhp and 300ft lbs of torque
I am thinking of the domestic market for a practical engine transplant - something that starts at -30c and I do not have to import, and a bullet proof motor

    • @jeremylakenes6859
      @jeremylakenes6859 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I asked Ashcroft if they could separate the T-Case gear for the part time 4x4 kit because I can find the locking hubs here in Brazil AVM. They said they couldn’t. They wanted to sell me the whole kit for almost £300 plus shipping plus import taxes. This would be nearly £600 when all is said in done.
I did my research and what they didn’t tell me was that their kit is made in Brazil. They would have let me buy something from them and pay three times as much and have the hassle of importation and such só they could make a buck. I like their stuff, but his kind of put me off.
Anyway, I can get the complete kit here for £133!!!
I want this kit do get rid of the stupid slack in the drivetrain.
A mechanic in Brasilia has done 30+ 2.5 to 2.8 kits. Happy customers and no problems. Lots more torque.
Add ported head from U.K., Take out the first muffler, add Boost Pin and Boost Ring, and my guess is 145-165 hp.
      Again, no adapters.
But I understand if you don’t already have a 300TDI to work with.
      4BT cummins? 4BT Isuzu?
But then there is linkage, and all sorts of issues.
Maybe a 5,7 Chevy with 700R4 trans, B&m shifter. Get Mid 90s fuel injected block and put a carburetor on it with edelbrock performer intake. 600cfm carb.
With the hearing, the overdrive, and the defender being light, it would drive better than any Landy V8 and be cheep to fix. 300,000 Miles out of the fuel injected motors because they are machines better. No oil leaks, serpentine drive, etc. no timing belt, or spendy pump. I bet you’d get 20mpg on the highway.
If you’d consider the 2.8 I could try and find the factory that produces the crank and pistons.

    Hi there
I live in South Africa and drive a 300tdi. The problem we have with the tdi, is fuel. Here the tdi only runs on high sulphur, 500 ppm (particles per million), diesel. I tried running it on low sulphur diesel, the same the common rail engines run on, and seized my diesel pump and injectors after 2 years, as the sulphur in the fuel lubricates the (Bosch) diesel pump. The problem now is that 500ppm diesel is being phased out. What other tdi owners have been doing is to add 2 stroke oil with the diesel (at a ratio of 200:1). This is an inconvenience however. So what do I do? Change to a Td5 or Puma? Both will also be relative easy to fit.
    Regards

The 2.8 is already installed in many many jeeps as an aftermarket conversion. Search TH-cam for R2.8 Underwater or Ultimate Adventure 2018 to see several that have been installed in jeeps being beat on fairly severely. One in an RRC although most of the drivetrain was swapped. I have an 86 110 with the 2.5NA and a Cummins in the crate ready to go in. I also went stumpy R380 and have the bell housing talked about. Reason being is I don't want to spend even more on new driveshafts etc because the LT230 would move. With the stumpy, the driveline is stock from R380 back swapping from my LT77. I agree with a lot said in this video. Costs can grow quick if you don't pay attention.

I suspect shipping costs and parts availability are very different, powerful variables dependant upon where you are in the world. It would have to be a very easy conversion, reliable and very cheap new engine to beat the cost/hassle/reliability factors that are available if you are here in the UK surrounded by cheap running donor 300tdi vehicles. And if you want more power then MD Engineering sell upgrade kits to HS2.8 std. And if you want something special then Ashcroft are nothing but a mile away for a "moowing cow" auto conversion! I will stick to doing Landy based conversions for a while yet. I would argue that Real K and N air filters are still king of air filters for both performance and efficiency but I do concede they do nothing for reducing noise. Does the "Guesstimate" costs put this into a non starter situation for you?

Hi. We had a lot of crankshaft issues A LOT of spun bearings both main and big end and had a huge amount of issues with chewing out thrust bearings. I have worked on a few cummins foton engine plant made engines and they’re 50/50 they make a great NT series or 6BT but the 2.8 litre ISF was not very well built or durable sometimes they would fail on the start up and they were never in the foton vehicle always on a stationary pump or generator so not a lot of fluctuating loads ect. I believe myself it’s a manufacturing fault or poor materials as their is another engine I’ve seen (new model) and every time it needed a valve set it needed a cam shaft and looked as though some home hobby engineer had made the camshaft in his back shed. All that said I love cummins usually very reliable but not keen on these little 2.8litre ISF engines. Would you consider a 6BT or to big?

I bought a complete 2005 GM Jimmy with the 4.3 5 speed manual in for C$800 locally
As there were no M57 here - all the costs are going to be importing an unknown engine and taking a risk - at lest with the GM they are plentiful and very robust - and roughly the same outputs as the 2.8 Cummins - and start at -30c

They said a 4BT would be great too, but i don't know if it would. 300Tdi is what most advice, i plan a 300tdi pump on a 19J block.

And that leaves a 300tdi minus a pump. I can crate it as "scrap sample" and ship it out to Canada.

like yourself, not a fan of this engine's past, or of it's current Warranty scheme, as they do not provide warranty in WV (we are based out of) or Texas? Why? Secondly, you are right that there are chinese built units, albeit they want you to believe that it is built in Indiana (if i recall correctly). Cost also makes no sense whatsoever. As it is a 20K+ project before all is said and done, (no we are not installing it behind a 25+ year old gearbox) and with that kind of money you can have vastly superior quality engine's, known "million mile" engine's rather than a promise unit. How's the LS swap going?

They are finding out that the R380 is not suitable for these engines - even new boxes
The LS is coming on - a lot of small issues, but they are not a cheap conversion as you need to source a lot of extra parts!

@@BritannicaRestorations If you run into a snag with the LS, give me a SHOUT Pim @ DCRovers gladly chat over the phone. Let's be honest, the R380 is great, but it does have it's limitations.
