      Eventually everyone dies at killscreen. May not be instant kill anymore, it sure is certain death no matter how far you progress. Considering that players has to adapt new playstyles, play considerably different to previous levels just to survive is a testimony that the transition deserves an equally special name. Killscreen sound way more exciting than post post or those other names, which not only are less striking but confusing aswell. Killscreen is in no way misleading or inaccurate. It seems like the player base is forcing a name change bcuz, now that the meta has changed, they desperately want to show it off as a token of pride or something.

    I can't wait for bugged colors. It's hard to really grasp the unforeseen ability of these players ("it's just stacking blocks really quick"), and a letter showing up instead of a number in the score counter doesn't feel all that impressive. The wrong colors showing up on all the blocks, though, I think even a layman can go "woah, that's cool! I've never seen it do that before!!"

    The killscreen still is the killscreen for 98% of the players, and by players, I mean everyone who plays NES Tetris nowadays. 2% have mastered the rolling technique, yes, but most still either tap (and the best can reach Level 40) or actually use DAS or slow tap or whatever, and that's most likely still the vast majority. So I think the killscreen can still be called killscreen, be it NTSC 29 or PAL 19, it is what it is. :)

    I remember telling a budding hypertapper, Jani Herlevi, that maxing out on PAL would eventually prove obtainable. That was in around 2017 or so--and my prediction was on point, when, in April 2021, EricICX achieved the first ever PAL maxout. Jani's response to me: "Go to hell". He's got to have eaten his words by now. However, I could never have predicted people would essentially stomp NES Tetris into a bloody pulp with the advent of rolling. It essentially means there is only one last hard limit left in the game: when the game freezes at around level 236 or so, due to the score calculations taking longer than a frame to complete. However, let it be known that reaching this stratospheric level will take several *hours*. And scores would exceed 100 million at that point. Long before then, though, at around level 138, the game stops being able to handle the level progression, and starts reading the wrong areas of memory, and thus you get absolutely weird color schemes.

    Is it time to put rolling into a different category? It seems that the way the top players can learn and embrace rolling (nothing wrong with this per se) is fairly soon going to make (if it hasn't already) kill screen play irrelevant. I have a 850000 PB playing on an emulator so I am nowhere near really being able to seriously comment on this, but could this new style of play effectively be the death of tetris as we know it? The qualifier was livestreamed, as the system that the tournaments uses (someone can correct me if I'm wrong because I've never participated in the event), generates an authorization word online, and so the player has to, before starting the session, put up a score that appears on the in-game leaderboard, naming it that particular word. This would prove that the session isn't spliced together, as it is very hard to fake that sort of thing without it becoming suspicious due to the continuity of the leaderboard scores through the qualifying session. Furthermore, Cheez has been rolling longer than anyone else has, and this record, while extreme, is within the upper limits of what he could have expected given his abilities.

  • @wolverinex4243

    I have said on the tournaments that we haven't seen the best player bc they stack on the left mainly, and that the best can stack wherever....this may well be the best player and the score doesn't lie. The best player also shouldn't focus mostly on getting the tetris.

    What do you mean by “true kill screen ”

    • @CobaltTetris
      @CobaltTetris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Near level 255, the game has trouble calculating the points being scored, and so it ends up crashing, which means its essentially impossible to progress further. That's a ways away though.

    As much fun as it is to watch these games, I kind of wish there was a "true killscreen" at like level 50 or something, so that there was still a theoretical cap to the maximum possible score. Otherwise even world record games will have kind of an anticlimactic quality to them, as they will inevitably end in a misdrop rather than reaching "the end" of the game.

      A killscreen is the point in the game that is unbeatable and impossible. It kills you when you get to it. Anyone who thinks level 29 is a killscreen is either blind, r=tard2d, or both

    Yeah. This really brings in the good case to split the CTWC Championship into playstyles. Rollers, DAS, Hypertapper/Hybrid. Probably impossible since CTWC only has so much to do the Championship but maybe they can do the qualifiers remotely and just have the top 8 or so live...if the ever get to do a live event again. It's just insane it's gotten to this level.

    I made a comment on Ruins channel about how Tetris tournaments should start at lvl19 because players can play so so deep into kill screen that start at lvl 18 means a match would take too long. (Similar to how in the past, they used to start at lvl 15 and then they abandon it). Of course some of the player who haven't practice rolling yet deny this idea. But i think all players should practice rolling. It's the fastest technique, and it doesn't put stress on your hand and fingers like hyper tapping. I don't want to see players retire after a couple years because of injury, which happen all the time in competitive gaming.
