I had a similar issue shark fishing when Karen approached screaming I chopped the sharks head off with my machete and put him into my cooler she called the cops attempted to assault me and steal my fishing poles even tried to take the machete out of my hand.... She was arrested

I’ve caught a ray the same way… totally took me by surprise but it was hooked on its nose/head tip area. I can’t tell if they’re trying to eat it or if they just lay/swim on top of it maybe?? Hasnt happened again but interesting to see it happen to someone else
I’ve hooked onto a Ray before on a jig. I did notice that one attack the lure and try to eat it. I’ve seen guys hook onto bat rays on lucky craft jerk baits too. I think it does happen sometime!
I'm an avid fisherman I guess sigh.. I still do but alot less here's why. I I had a saltwater aquarium laying around from an old reef tank. Yep. A baby calico and a Cortez Ray. I understand these days that is not legal to do any longer , anyway... The bass was like a dog. I would throw stuff like change or a piece if wadded paper along the outside of tank (across front) and he would chase it. Also loved to mess with me with any swimbait (hookless of course). Was always excited when I first came in room and would "pace" at the end till played with him or fed. I released him about 2 years after when my house was about to be fumigated. I found a small Cortez Ray at a local aquarium/fish place . It was even worse. She was like a puppy and loved to be touched and interacted with, and fed she was a pig! Would swim upside down and spit water out like a fountain when she wanted food. She also loved to swim and twirl in the power heads I've never seen anything like it. Rays are a challenge to keep and we lost her after having her 4 years from an infection we could not treat. Anyway sorry for the story but man it changed how I fish 🤣🤣🤣🤣. The bass I'm CnR all day anyway and I swear they are agressivve and enjoy raging on the end of my braid, but the Rays.. bless their hearts, there kinda sweet curious creatures. Maybe next time I'll tell the story of the 11ft manta Ray I pulled on for 2 hours in Jose Del Cabo thinking it was Marlin 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Butterfly rays to my knowledge are the only rays that will strike live creatures. (Obviously they think your lure is alive lol) nice catch! That was a good one.
Hey! So I definitely recommend getting pliers. There are long nose pliers that might be useful to. Most of the, the smaller rays aren’t going to pose too much of an issue. It’s pretty easy to watch out for the pliers. But as long as you flip the ray on it’s back and just stand the opposite side where it’s tail is, you should be good. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can have someone hold the tail with pliers while you unhook it. Hope that helps!

I use to love fishing in Long Beach especially the west side of memorial pier but the water conditions just became terrible. The amount of dirt on the water just ruined the inside of my car, I went to San Clemente and the fishing is a lot better. Good video!

My son was using a bottom dragging Drum lure and caught a Bass. You don't always know what is going to bite your line.
