    His willingness to kill himself at the end and override his self preservation was what deleted Tyler Durden from his mind, because he was created as a coping mechanism which is a function of self preservation.

    • @patinho5589
      @patinho5589 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d say the part of his brain responsible for creating the dual personality being blown out deleted Tyler.
      You can survive a bullet through your brain if it goes through the right part(s).

    The way Hannah figured out the twist was amazing and I haven't seen that before. Just don't take the mental health aspect of this movie seriously, it was a plot device and an artistic choice to carry a message, not a realistic depiction of multiple personalities.

    • @Nelekets
      @Nelekets 2 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Agreed. And this movie was made way before the whole mental health craze boom started. Really has nothing to do with mental health issues etc

    • @casualcausalityy
      @casualcausalityy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I don't think it even implies the narrator has multiple personality disorder. His subconscious created a singular alter ego, whether that's realistic or not is a different question

    • @BrianNIL
      @BrianNIL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@justmeeagainn The movie is saying that a person with multiple personality disorder can literally shoot one of the personalities out through his head. One does not need to be a doctor to know this is not true.

    • @foamingclean596
      @foamingclean596 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes. It's not a correct depiction of multiple personalities, however, the movie is entirely about the negative effects of western hegemonic masculinity and capitalism on the mind. It's very much about mental health. If you don't understand that, you're getting a very incorrect reading of the film.

    • @BrianNIL
      @BrianNIL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@foamingclean596 when I said "don't take the mental health aspect of this movie seriously" I was referring to the narrator and Tyler Durden being the same person. I said it that way to avoid the spoiler.

    One night in 2004 my friends and I made the wise decision to watch Fight Club while getting loaded on tequila. One thing led to another, and next thing you know we were in the back yard beating the crap out of each other. I don't remember much about our little fight club experiment, but we all woke up the next day battered, bloody, and with the worst hangovers possible. I don't generally drink tequila anymore.

    The original "pillow talk"-scene had Marla saying "I want to have your abortion". When this was objected to by Fox 2000 Pictures President of Production Laura Ziskin, David Fincher said he would change it on the proviso that the new line couldn't be cut. Ziskin agreed and Fincher wrote the replacement line, "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school". When Ziskin saw the new line, she was even more outraged and asked for the original line to be put back, but, as per their deal, Fincher refused.

    I think the big thing about the final scene is, even though he failed to "successfully" shoot himself, his INTENTION in that moment was to annihilate both himself and Tyler - and so Tyler was destroyed anyway, because he only existed in the first place through the Narrator's belief.
    Great job figuring out the twist so far ahead of time! :)

    • @mokane86
      @mokane86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well he did shoot himself, but yeah lived through it.
      right, he "killed" Tyler through the intention.
      however, can he really kill a figment personality?
      the final splice of pornography (in some versions) might imply that Tyler is still in there somewhere.

    As someone who has stress induced insomnia, I can say that this movie is super relatable in a lot of ways and quite accurate. Granted I have never been to the point of having an alter ego that wants to be a terrorist but, when I have a trigger for it, I can go multiple days without being able to sleep. I only get this way a few times a year but when it comes up, everything just turns into a blur. I am usually still functional up to 36 hours but past that, things get kinda fuzzy. There were times where I would drive to work and as I pulled into the parking lot, I would have no memory of the drive there. Literally just remember pulling out of my driveway and into the gate at work and nothing in between. It really makes you wonder what happens in those blackout periods. How many red lights did I run? Did I hit someone on the way there? It is kinda scary really.

    • @fredmedrano6584
      @fredmedrano6584 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think at some point at the start movie mc says something like "I can't sleep but I ain't really awake" and it's the best way I can imagine of explaining insomnia
      I would do normal life but my short-term memory was off to the point I would carry folded paper to take notes of the things I did so I would'nt repeat them, and the second I stopped actively doing something my mind would just go into stand by and I would stare into nothingness (at times for hours)
      But the people were worse, "Why dont you just go to sleep earlier?" "Have you tried doing this and that?" I swear by God I almost got expelled after grabbing a teacher from his neck after he acused me of sleeping during class

    At the end of the movie, he doesn't try to kill himself. He says "my eyes are open" because it is referring back to the chemical burn scene. Tyler is showing his alter ego that he no longer fears the pain, and he no longer tries to hide from it like he did before by escaping into his mind. So, by accepting pain he kills his need for Tyler.

      @@patinho5589 If you watch the scene and pause right after the gunshot goes off you can see that the bullet wound exit comes out behind the back of his left jaw, under his earlobe. If he shot himself in the back of the head and blew out his brain he wouldnt have been able to talk, much less actually be alive. He would have died instantly, like Rob. You can even see him put his hand over that part of his face to stop the bleeding.
      So let me get this straight, you think that what the movie is trying to imply is that the main character literally blew his own brains out, and survived? My guy, I've watched and read the book, plus probably 20 interpretations of the ending, and that has got to be the absolute worst take on it that I have ever seen.
      You can even see he has no gunshot wound in his head directly after when he's talking to Marla. Stop trolling.

    This movie changed the course of my life. I saw it when I was in medical school and was the kind of guy who had to buy just the right thing to "express my personality." I was a brainwashed consumer.
    "We buy things we dont need to impress people we dont know."
    "Things you own end up owning you."
    After leaving school, I rarely bought anything. Minimalist lifestyle. I spent my money on travel. Lived in the caribbean islands for a few years treating diabetes, asia for a few years. I've spent weeks in Africa and Japan, working with children.
    Now, I'm late middle-aged, about to retire early with all the money I saved. I look at my fellow schoolmates, who are saddled with debt for their houses and extra cars and closets full of clothes and shoes I never see them wear.....those poor guys CANT retire...not for another decade at least. They own a lifestyle that owns them. They are my friends and they complain about "pressure," and "high cost of living" and "needing a break" to me all the time. I pretend I have the same problem, and instead, I see them as the ***road i didnt take.**
    May be I woulda taken this road anyway, but day I saw Fight Club, I felt different thereafter.

      @GiJoe94 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @YusufTalibMinimalism is way easier lifestyle because you don't have to overthink, you have no choice. I'm not minimalist because I save money (that money goes to other things anyway) but I'm a minimalist because it's way easier and also I spend my energy on things that matter, not the daily mundane things. Also at the end of a hard day at work my mental battery still has charge because I'm not thinking what clothes should I wear today, what should I eat, what did that person do or how do I look etc.. I have been like that since childhood, seeing that movie in my teens just reasured me that I'm not alone.

    This is one of the best films and I recommend it to everyone. I usually get a response similar to Hannah's, because they think it's just a movie about fighting, but once they've seen it they understand. But the themes in this film are incredible. Chuck did a great job with the book as well, and they continued the father line with a comic for Fight Club 2 where the main character is now a dad. Interestingly, Brad Pitt was the first choice for Tyler after working with Fincher on Se7en. Loved the reaction as always, y'all!

Fucking big ups.

    Fun Fact: they never mention Ed Norton's characters name. He's listed a Jack, but that name is from the medical books he's reading.
    I am Jack's medula oblongata.
    I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
    I am Jack's smirking revenge.

    Fight Club is like an onion with layers, sitting inside another onion with layers, sitting inside another onion with layers.
    It shows what its like to live with almost all of the types of mental illness (depression, mania, delusions, dissociation, etc).
    It contrasts toxic emasculation with toxic masculinity. It shows how both of them are equally bad.
    It has created real-life irony. Like how so many men with toxic masculinity latched on to the word "snowflake" as an insult, never realizing they were EXACTLY the type of people the film was condemning. And then the ultimate irony: Those fools started making themselves feel special by using the word "snowflake" to insult people who believe that everyone is special.
    You've got the anti-consumerist message. And the anti-cult message.
    And then there's the (IMO) most important message of all: It shows a child who wishes to be a boy, then sees the behavior of the boy, and grows up to be a man.
    So many people looked at Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden as the hero. He WAS NOT.
    We don't see the actual hero until the final minutes of the film, when the Pixies are playing "Where is my mind".
    Edward Norton's Tyler was incapable of having a relationship with Marla. Brad Pitt's Tyler was incapable of having a relationship. It is only when the child takes control, and kills the boy that he finally becomes a man. Finally, he is able to hold Marla's hand, and treat her as an equal, and have compassion for her.

    Huge respect for Hannah and you to pick up the big twist so early on from just the simple fact that Marla couldn't hear the noise. Also was awesome to pick up that we aren't told the name of the central character. That is something very few notice til the end. Fun cameo appearance. When the film shows the Narrator in a hotel room turning on the TV, and the hotel staff on the screen say "welcome," Brad Pitt is in the staff lol. A few filler notes for you: When the Narrator (Ed Norton's official name) shot himself, he was using his will to kill off Tyler, since he was consciously willing to kill himself, the subconscious persona reacted as though the suicide was real.
    When Marla tells Tyler "i haven't been fucked like that since grade school" she didn't understand how raunchy that line was meant to be, here in the states. The age involved for grade school here is like 12-16. Even worse, the original line from the book is arguably harsher. Marla actually tells Tyler "I want to have your abortion." fucking YIKES lol.

    This movie is so well done. Symbolisms all over the place, twists, turns, the acting performances from Pitt and Norton just phenomenal. And then you have the cultural impact of this movie and its still being analyzed and broken down. One of the best movies.

    The shooting himself was him rejecting and no longer needing Tyler, which was what Tyler spent the previous 20 minutes trying to convince him of ("I'll drag you, as always, kicking and screaming and you will thank me later", "how far have you come because of me", "I didn't make up a loser alter ego to make myself feel better", "Ikea boy", etc). Before that scene, his mind still subconsciously felt he needed Tyler to be important, powerful, influential, and free.

    Hey just found you two yesterday and you are BY FAR my favorite reaction video you tubers ALREADY! I LOVE your dynamic! You perfectly compliment one another. And your reactions are always so genuine. Your Green Mile video, when you’re comforting each other when it gets real heavy, it was just so sweet. You both clearly feel things very deeply and it’s nice to see humanity is still alive! It’s kind of the reason I started watching reaction videos in the first place, for real human reactions to meaningful, profound art and I thought that it was getting harder and harder to find. But then I stumbled upon your channel and you’ve both totally rekindled that for me. So thank you!!Keep doing what you’re doing, I’ll keep watching! I suggest American Beauty (if you haven’t already). It’s a gorgeous movie with lots of “symbolisms”.😉 You two are great! Keep it up! And thanks for the entertainment! Rhode Island, USA.

They are funny but recently they have sorta distracted the two of you from seeing and hearing different things in the movie. I always come for the commentary, and I do love it, but trying to reach for a symbol in the midst of watching for the first time makes you turn your head to look at Hannah, and might actually send you off on a different path of thinking than the movie intended. 12:13 "Is that [about oxygen getting you high] real?"
    Ironically, the exact opposite is true. Oxygen is a stimulant, it doesn't get you high. In fact, the nitrogen that's in our regular air has a slight narcotic effect.
    This has actually been proven with an experiment with aptitude tests. They tested some people breathing regular air, and then tested them again while they were using oxygen tanks, providing a higher concentration of oxygen than normal air does.
    The people all did noticeably better when they were breathing purer oxygen. We are actually constantly walking around slightly high because of the nitrogen we're breathing.
    And in the case of airplanes, wanting to keep people calm and accepting if they're about to die... if they wanted to do that, it'd be far easier to just not provide oxygen at all. Lack of oxygen will get you far more loopy than anything.
    The TH-cam channel SmarterEveryday actually did a fascinating video showing how badly(and how FAST) lack of oxygen affects you, especially on airplanes. Destin was taken up to regular cruise altitude in a non-pressurized plane. He then took off his oxygen mask, to demonstrate how much lack of oxygen affects you.
    It was honestly scary. Less than a minute later, he was completely incoherent and almost unresponsive. The people with him are literally telling him to his face, "Put your mask on, or you're going to die!" and he's just sitting there smiling happily and blankly.
    That's why they tell you to put your mask on before helping others with theirs when masks deploy. You really don't know how quickly that affects you. The time it takes to help someone else with their mask could bring you to the point you're no longer coherent enough to put your own on.

      You are 100% correct. I have sleep apnea, and last year when I had a chest cold they added oxygen to my CPAP because my O2 levels had dropped so far. I still have the O2 compressor to use at night to make sure I get enough oxygen while asleep. I can say definitively that NOT having oxygen IS what leads to cognitive impairment, hallucinations, feelings of being high, and the "docile" traits--which is really just having so little oxygen you don't have the ability to move at all. On the other hand, I've run my compressor during the day at times when I have a particularly tricky work problem I need to solve, because O2 HELPS you think better.

    i love how in repeat viewings when you know whats gonna happen, all the clues and hints are there from the beginning. Like when Edward Norton is at the airport and says "you wake up in another city, could you wake up at another person" and at that exact moment Tyler passes by in the opposite direction and the camera briefly pans left to focus on Tyler. theres a lot of moments like this in the movie.
    when i left the cinema back when it came out, i was freshly 18 and could finally legally go to 18 movies on my own and i had to sit down outside and just think about everything in the world.
