My mother’s friend got in an accident that technically shouldn’t be all that dangerous but a mid 2010s Corolla (brand new at the time, had like a year or so) folded like a cardboard box. Guy spent few months in a coma, is now crippled for life. I’ve driven a Corolla from this era and it has no structural stiffness whatsoever, feels like a mid 90s car and a bad one at that. Pretty sure they just bribe their way through certifications.
@@rondhole SUVs and their poor safety is whole another story. If a moose test was part of certification most of them wouldn’t pass for sure(at least not without bribing the officials). Most of them already probably don’t pass pedestrian safety tests and are officially certified only because of corruption being commonplace in certifying bodies.

I own a 2017 Corolla sport. Happy to see this. I was an apprentice mechanic at Toyota when the 98 model was brand new. At the time they were considered very safe cars. In 20 years the 2017 Corolla will be considered a death trap.
As somebody who owned a '94 Corolla (and did a 540 degree hydroplane spin on US 41 at 60 MPH) and now currently owns a 2019 Corolla. . . I am happy that I got out of the first unscathed and glad to own the second now with any family members riding.

I want a another 1977 Corolla. I bought one from the original owner with 360,000 on the engine and transmission. We pushed it just over 400k miles before the transmission fell apart. We towed it home and red lined the engine in the back yard till it ran out of gas. That engine purred and screamed on demand till the end. Extremely reliable car.
The 1998 Corolla in Australia was the same design as the 1993-1997 models in the USA. I think Australia used that body style from 1994-1999, introducing and retiring it a couple years after the USA. Plus airbags were still optional on the Aussie spec Corolla in 1998, a driver airbag was standard on USA Corollas in ‘93 and a passenger airbag came standard in ‘94. The Corolla generation after this one was a HUGE leap in safety. Got an Acceptable (almost a Good) in IIHS offset testing. So if this had been a 2000 Corolla (with airbags, which I believe were standard in Aus by then) the driver would have done MUCH better. November 24, 2018 2:34 am

La diferencia es muy muy notable los autos modernos son más seguros pero obvio depende el país aquí en Latinoamérica le sacan niveles de seguridad lo cual eso es prácticamente un crímen es increíble q se le saque a los vehículos el nivel de equipamiento de accesorios como de seguridad es increíble e inaceptable

Good to know, thank you for sharing that. Mine's a '96 DX and I'm running her until she can't/is legitimately totaled. However, this test is on the up (and it's 40mph), they WON'T hold up against a newer vehicle in a head-on and you WON'T survive it. The engine actually busted out the dash and the steering column crushes into the driver as well. Force even broke the seat. The full video has footage inside the cab of this.

Also for those asking about airbags in the 1998 Corolla: Australia adopted airbags a few years after the USA. Driver airbags were widely available in the USA as early as 1990 and were on most cars by 1993. The laggards got them by 1995. Passenger airbags were widely available in 1994, and were on most cars by 1995. The laggards waited till 1996-1997. By 1998 dual airbags were a Federal standard. In contrast, driver airbags weren’t widely available in Australia until about 1995 and dual airbags were unheard of until that same year. Most Australian cars didn’t get an airbag until about 1997-1998, with some waiting until about 2000. Passenger airbags weren’t on most new Aussie cars till about 1999-2000. So Australia lagged the States in frontal airbags by about 5 years. Europe was about halfway between the USA and Australia in airbag installation. El igv (o iva en otros paises) es lo que le sube un poco el precio respecto a otros paises (por ejemplo en la mayoria de estados americanos es de 0% mientras que en peru es de 18%) por tanto en peru los autos hechos en estados unidos son 18% mas caros aparte de la ganancia del distribuidor que puede ser muy variable entre marca y marca. Otra comparacion, por ejemplo en argentina el iva es de 21% y encima tienen aranceles de importacion altos entonces un bmw serie 1nuevo traido de estados unidos (con el que tenemos tratado de libre comercio) cuesta en peru unos 38000 dolares precio de venta en tienda, mientras que en argentina con los aranceles de importacion mas el mayor iva no baja de 55000 dolares. Como veras, en peru los coches no son tan caros, yo diria qie son bastante accesibles y se venden entre 80000 y 100000 autos nuevos al año.

martin dominguez toyota siempre es muy buscadito. Tuve un corolla 2001 que compre completamente nuevo y me costo algo de 16000 dolares ese año. A fines de 2007 me compre el nuevo corolla por casi us 18000 y llegue a la tienda en el anterior a firmar los papeles para el tramite de la tarjeta de propiedad y un muchacho que andaba en el salon de ventas buscando un toyo usado con garantia de tienda casi me lo quito de las manos, me pago una hora despues, ahi nomas en el banco que esta a 100 mts de la tienda us 10000 por el 2001 que estaba muy cuidado pero ya con 85000 kmts. Uno de los vendedores del salon se percato del asunto y no le gusto mucho, pero asi es la vida, yo ni lo busque. Debe haber sido la venta mas rapida de mi vida, ni siquiera lo habia anunciado ni nada. Al peru hoy en dia importar un usado de hasta cinco años esta gravado con tales impuestos que resulta costando igual o mas que uno nuevo, por eso ya nadie importa usados. Mi hermana cuando era estudiante de medicina en los estados unidos compro el año 94 un tercel dos puertes calato, sin aire ni estereo siquiera que le costo us 6500 aprox en ese entonces. Recorrio medio estados unidos en el bicho ese y le hizo mas de 100000 milas, hasta yo lo maneje duro y cuando ya se iba de estados unidos el año 1999 lo ofrecio en el mural de la facultad de medicina, sin siquiera poner el precio. Also for those asking about airbags in the 1998 Corolla: Australia adopted airbags a few years after the USA. Driver airbags were widely available in the USA as early as 1990 and were on most cars by 1993. The laggards got them by 1995. Passenger airbags were widely available in 1994, and were on most cars by 1995. The laggards waited till 1996-1997. By 1998 dual airbags were a Federal standard. In contrast, driver airbags weren’t widely available in Australia until about 1995 and dual airbags were unheard of until that same year. Most Australian cars didn’t get an airbag until about 1997-1998, with some waiting until about 2000. Passenger airbags weren’t on most new Aussie cars till about 1999-2000. So Australia lagged the States in frontal airbags by about 5 years. Europe was about halfway between the USA and Australia in airbag installation. However, many parts of the world are just now getting around to widespread airbag fitment!

PETER TOWERS estas equivocado, en peru los autos tienen arancel de importacion muy bajo y en algunos casos por tratado de libre comercio ni tienen. El igv (o iva en otros paises) es lo que le sube un poco el precio respecto a otros paises (por ejemplo en la mayoria de estados americanos es de 0% mientras que en peru es de 18%) por tanto en peru los autos hechos en estados unidos son 18% mas caros aparte de la ganancia del distribuidor que puede ser muy variable entre marca y marca. Otra comparacion, por ejemplo en argentina el iva es de 21% y encima tienen aranceles de importacion altos entonces un bmw serie 1nuevo traido de estados unidos (con el que tenemos tratado de libre comercio) cuesta en peru unos 38000 dolares precio de venta en tienda, mientras que en argentina con los aranceles de importacion mas el mayor iva no baja de 55000 dolares. Como veras, en peru los coches no son tan caros, yo diria qie son bastante accesibles y se venden entre 80000 y 100000 autos nuevos al año.

martin dominguez toyota siempre es muy buscadito. Tuve un corolla 2001 que compre completamente nuevo y me costo algo de 16000 dolares ese año. A fines de 2007 me compre el nuevo corolla por casi us 18000 y llegue a la tienda en el anterior a firmar los papeles para el tramite de la tarjeta de propiedad y un muchacho que andaba en el salon de ventas buscando un toyo usado con garantia de tienda casi me lo quito de las manos, me pago una hora despues, ahi nomas en el banco que esta a 100 mts de la tienda us 10000 por el 2001 que estaba muy cuidado pero ya con 85000 kmts. Uno de los vendedores del salon se percato del asunto y no le gusto mucho, pero asi es la vida, yo ni lo busque. Debe haber sido la venta mas rapida de mi vida, ni siquiera lo habia anunciado ni nada. Al peru hoy en dia importar un usado de hasta cinco años esta gravado con tales impuestos que resulta costando igual o mas que uno nuevo, por eso ya nadie importa usados. Mi hermana cuando era estudiante de medicina en los estados unidos compro el año 94 un tercel dos puertes calato, sin aire ni estereo siquiera que le costo us 6500 aprox en ese entonces. Recorrio medio estados unidos en el bicho ese y le hizo mas de 100000 milas, hasta yo lo maneje duro y cuando ya se iba de estados unidos el año 1999 lo ofrecio en el mural de la facultad de medicina, sin siquiera poner el precio. Esa misma tarde llamo una señora que lo qieria para su hija y le puso us 3500 en las manos, sin siquiea inspeccionar mucho el bicho ese.
