I was able to finish 1st in like 2-3 of the 4 tracks on each circuit and sometimes barely make it with just enough points, but Rocket Racer is something else. If he or Black Knight warp in front of you and get too far ahead, you're done.
They make the power up stronger by changing what they do. For example the standard shield lasts for roughly 4 seconds, but when upgraded with white bricks it can last longer. The shield goes from roughly 4 seconds to 6 seconds, then 8 seconds with projectiles being reflected back, and then finally 12 seconds with projectile reflection.
