    Alone, As a Fire Inspector I would advise you to move your SMOKE ALARM up higher on the wall. The ALARM should be within 6-8 inches from the ceiling. DO NOT mount it up in the corner even with the ceiling. That is a dead air space and air tends to roll around that space and not into it. The easiest way for proper position is the place the alarm all the way up to the ceiling and then rotate it down one rotation. That would put the alarm approximately 6 inches or one diameter away from the ceiling. Make sense??

      OOOO awesome! A fire inspector!! I have questions for you Kevin. Please sit down 😁
      The unit I was doing the demo on is a smoke and CO2 combo unit. It was more positioned for CO2 and I do have plain smoke detectors in various places in the cabin away from corners. The "roll" you mentioned is exactly what I was picturing when putting the smoke detectors up. So here are my questions.
      1) Is it better to buy smoke and CO2 detectors separately since their positioning is very different?
      2) My bedroom is directly above the kitchen but with "cabin construction" there are gaps between the floor and wall. Should I put a smoke detector near those gaps?
      3) When CO2 alarms, ok to just open windows and doors?
      I will pin your comment and Thank you Kevin! 🧡

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska I hope you’re sitting with a nice hot cup of tea!! 😃. Placement of CO (Carbon Monoxide… No 2) are often thought to be lower than Smoke Alarms. CO has a molecular structure slightly less than Oxygen. So close that CO moves and hangs in the “air” much like Oxygen. Co moves through your home by a couple/ three ways. One, by air currents made by someone walking through a room and disturbing the air in that room. A second way is by heating ducts that spread the CO throughout the home. A third way is in homes such as yours where air currents generated by hot air displacing cool air at different levels of the home. Co detectors can be placed anywhere in the home as long as they are not placed in areas where air currents cannot be sampled by the detector… such as a small closet or behind a couch or chair. Homes that have a wood burning stove are a little tricky because the wood stove does not have a perfect draft to take all the products of combustion up and out of the home. In fact if the wood stove in manufactured (not home-made) there may be a statement in the paperwork thats recommends that you open a door or window to help with that drafting. But in your area, that may be counter productive with the cold air. Combination Smoke/CO alarms need to be placed higher up on the wall or on the ceiling because of the smoke alarm component within the unit. As far as placing a smoke alarm near the cracks in the floor and wall, You should place smoke alarms on every level of the home. You might also think about a unit in the crawl space. My only concern is smoke alarms should not be placed in a space that continually get warm and then cool and then warm again, sos on and so on…. In that scenario moisture could possibly form on this circuitry and short it out and into an alarm condition. If your CO alarm does go into alarm, yes open the windows to air the room out but…. Keep in mind an alarming unit will draw down on the batteries sooner than one that does not go into alarm. The sensing part of the alarm unit takes very little power to test the air around the unit. Which brings me to the last point. If possible, purchase smoke alarms with extended life sealed batteries. I’m going to say right here that they don’t last 10 years!!! But they do last a long time! That’s why they are now calling those alarms as Extended life alarms. These new alarms have an “end of life” sensor that will sound a tone and the unit will stop sounding if the test button is pressed. Please have everyone continue to test ALL Smoke/CO Alarms on a monthly basis to ensure that they are still working. I hope I have covered all of the points…… and very happy to do so!! We want your vlogs to continue for s long time Alone!!!!! 😃😃😃

      I'm a retired British fire officer & Kevin is right. Have smoke detection on every level (you can't have too many- ideally interlinked ) & heat detectors are available for areas such as kitchens where false alarms can be a nuisance. The batteries don't last 10 years, but with plenty of warning in the event of a fire, do make sure your escape route is clear at all times. we've had broken bones at fires where people jump needlessly from windows.
      I've dealt with incidents involving CO poisoning too & CO detectors are placed lower, but if you even had one on your bedside cabinet at sleeping head height, who could criticise? The effects of CO poisoning can be difficult to reverse & just like smoke, more often than not, it gets you whilst you sleep. I've been called out to assist police officers at such incidents & one of them had the classic red face & headaches due to entering the property. Make sure your stove flue is always clean, including any top fittings, because that's most likely where any CO will come from.
      The good news is, that people like you survive , having taken precautions, whereas the ones that come to grief simply didn't have a working alarm. I've spent many years on nightshift, consoling those who experienced great loss due to fires, telling them "at least no one was hurt, your insurance company can deal with all the damage" . The most common response of all is " I'm not insured".
      Just found your channel, greeting from the Cheviot Hills.

But braving that ladder and then having the wrong screwdriver made my heart sink and then yeah...... every cuss word I could muster. Probably some in languages I didn't even know I could speak! Looks like you are prepared for winter minus one thing.
    The "thing" i was telling you that you need but decided not to get
    is a must up in these parts,ask anyone....Really
    Its a classic newcomer mistake.
    Im speaking from experience and its a hard lesson to learn
    You really need to get a snowblower to keep your driveway cleared
    its a bit of work and tedious but its a must.
    My guy that plows my driveway is raising his rates yet again
    So next year im laying my hands on one,I have a bad back and it
    will take me some time but i wont be spending my entire summer paying the bill
    like i did this year.
    And Congrats on a million views

      I have a person that will be plowing the driveway this winter. I am hoping to get a tractor someday to do it myself. I will get a snow blower someday not matter what though. But I don't really hand shovel much at all. Mostly to releive pressure of the snow against something. And thank you Big T! I could not have made it to 1M views without you! 🧡

    Firemen on their annual house visit told me to put my fire detectors on the ceiling. Mine was on a top shelf 6 inches from ceiling and he said that is too low. Smoke goes to ceiling first and cumulates in a cloud going downwards and would only hit my detector after much cumulation, which might be too late. Based on position of yrs, that would mean a lot of smoke to collect from ceiling until there was enough of a cloud ro hit yr detector which is really low. So consider putting yr detector at highest point of the room as that is where the smoke will go first. Love yr videos. Tfs.

    Holy MAMA! That bull moose was SPECTACULAR!! I luuuuv mooses! I have a coffee mug and flannel jimjams with moose on them! Lol. Ok, AWESOME video, Alone! Got a chimfex in my amazon cart, and switched out my smoke and co2 alarms. Also, I've used baking soda on grease fires before- fantastic reminder for everyone how easy and safe it is to use that!!
    Now. As regards your roof waltz....you scared the poopie out of me!! I'm scared of heights too and I was almost frozen watching you up there. Thank goodness for a neighbor like yours! If we could all watch out for each other (while allowing everyone to live their own lives of course) we'd be so much better off. I have used baking soda more times than I would like to admit! 🤪 Yeah the roof stunt was not my best life choice. And that's what I get for waiting so long to clean the chimney! Next year I can do it much earlier! The neighbor (Fire Chief) does his job as a volunteer. He criss crosses many miles helping people out. Delivering food. Pick up from the hospital. Minor accidents. Basic welfare checks. It is nice to know that if I had "expired" from the roof stunt that hopefully he would have found me before any bears did! 😲🤣

It was always about service and working with what was at least then pure wilderness!! Applaud him, and glad you've both got each other. That's awesome. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    Well now, you have become quite the Bushrat, you certainly do think things out methodically. Here is a tip for cleaning your stovepipe out. Us oldtimers will take 2"x4"s make a ladder with the sides down flat and screw it to the roof going to the stovepipe, makes it a whole lot safer going up and going down. I use it a lot as I clean my chimeny once a month whether it needs it or not. That's how you prevent fires. I hope you get everything done that is needed before the snow closes in on you. Already got hit with over two feet of snow. So winter just plopped in! The moose was very wise and probably why it is so big. He just knew it was no longer hunting season in my neck of the woods! And I didn't have a tag either! But soon, caribou hunting again! 😁

    Great video.. I suggest putting your glass snack jars inside a pair of socks b4 wrapping in your throw blankets, that way you'll have an extra pair if needed and it provides extra cushion 4 the jars.

    Hi boo give you a piece of advice peppermint or mint oil will keep mice, moles and voles out of your vehicle. Just do a 50/50 mix in a spray bottle and spray it under hood and around wheel wells and inside the vehicle. Old farmers trick to eliminate them little bastards from chewing on your vehicles wiring and recking havoc on it. Set your food in a cooler with towels wrapped around them. Cooler will insulate them from the cold and they will not bust. Oh yeah the mint oil mixture will eliminate spider's and a few flying insects also. So use it around your house too.

    This is the first of your videos that I have seen. I will watch more. I spent many years in the subarctic, and learned some stuff. First, you are pretty well prepared. If you have nieces or nephews, they have a wise-ant Aunt! Second, fortify your cabin and windows more against destructive bears. You may need to build stronger outside walls (stone?) and put up closable metal shutters. Third, for warming a stuck vehicle you could use a couple of pans of fire bricks that you can warm over your propane burner and put safely in the car, one pan at a time. You are in my prayers..

      I must say that I wish you had the right person to watch your back 24/7, and the world's quickest and most reliable porcupine-avoiding "bear dog," plus Kenai, who is a great watchdog.

    • @peterbogart4531
      @peterbogart4531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just sped through all your videos. I will go back to many. Regarding the wild animals, my experience is that you are lucky not to apparently have many black bears around to destroy your cabin, etc. I hope you really are ahead of the disaster curve. Likely the grizzlies or browns will try to eat any black bear that they see, except maybe sow with cub. Please be ready with your .45-70 or maybe the Mosin-Nagant to protect your dog. Shotguns tend to take more shots to stop grizzly. Can do it, though, slugs and buckshot. .357 Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman for grizzly. Glock 10mm OK. 2 handguns beat one. God truly sent Kenai to you. You might get a second dog in order to stay ahead of events.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do plan on getting wood/metal shutters for all my windows. Maybe next year? And maybe some electrical strands across the windows. Some windows will get bear mats. And thank you for the fire brick suggestion! Never thought of that but just makes so much sense! I love it! 🧡

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kenai is a great watch dog but has never seen a porcupine so I would have to deal with them myself. Who knows! Someday someone may be here to help out but for now, its just me an Kenai! Quieter that way! 🤣

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have mostly black bears here and the occasional grizzly. Wolves for sure. I do carry the 45-70 as I know that will stop just about everything. The Mosin is more for hunting after I modify it but its always loaded. My 357 has hardcast ammo. I'd get a second or third dog but Kenai wont have that. I will let Kenai rule the cabin for now. Next round will be at least 2-3 dogs minimum. 🧡

    I am not a fan of getting on a roof. I always make sure the ladder reaches shoulder height above the roof so that I can stay upright while getting on and off the ladder. I would find away to attach to ladder to the roof so that it couldn’t be knocked down.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am discussing with my contractor a way to make the roof safer to walk on and a permanent ladder. I had planned on having one on the balcony but that project had to be sidelined this year. Contracting company I worked for taught ladder safety and three rungs minimum past the roof line. But I had a hard enough time extending that ladder. Only place I could get on the roof because of the water. 100% my fault for not cleaning the chimney sooner! 🤨🧡

    in Canada the fire alarm test has the same voice 'cept she says 'feu', 'fire', 'feu', 'fire' - feu is French for fire :). Buttercup heard the Kenai crying and came in from outside to see what was up - haha! OH MY GOD... that wet metal roof was giving me a heart attack. At least that was a good test to see if your neighbour is reliable - looks like he is :)!! had a grease fire once in a fishing cabin stove... dumped a whole pile of salt on it and it went out immediately - scared me to end! the guy i was dating at the time got water to dump on it and i caught him just in time - yikes!!! his momma didn't teach him well i guess :). I can't believe you're getting snow already!!!! Great video :)

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the French language but when it comes to fire alarms, yell it in english please! 😁 Sometimes I will watch funny TH-cam videos in bed just before going to sleep and if there is a dog howling, Kenai will howl back. Its so adorable. He looks at me after like "I did good right?" oooo thank goodness you caught him in time! That scenario could have ended so differently! Two feet of snow and more tonight! Hopefully tonight will be light but probably not. Alaska said its snow time and she ain't messin around this year! 🥶🤣

  • @clarkleakins879
    @clarkleakins879 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just an idea:
    If you plan to service the chimney regularly, perhaps install a rooftop anchor device to hook on a roofers/climbers harness to keep you safe.
    Alternative, have a belay anchor on the opposite lower eve from the side you are climbing/sliding up/down.
    Fall injuries are very close to the number one worst thing as we mature. Very easily one can incur a devastating life altering injury. And definitely never get on a ladder when tired!
    Someone should invent a robot/drone to clean chimneys. From the bottom up!

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! This was a bad call on my part and all because I delayed cleaning my chimney thinking I had time. With snow in the forecast next day, it just made the job more dangerous. But I am talking to my contractor to see about getting a tie off eyelet and some sort of permanent ladder installed. I can always clean my chimney from the ground up but the chimney cap always needs to be cleaned off as well. I am trying to make my life here more old world/pioneer style but if they made a robot that cleaned the chimney, I would still buy it! 🤭😉🧡

    I'm not sure if you covered this previously, but I keep the following in my trucks:
    Folding e-tool/shovel
    2 come-a-longs
    50' of steel cable
    2 50' ropes
    boy's axe
    bow/folding saw
    portable jack
    several lift slings
    shackles
    truckers chain
    Extra cotter pins
    road hazard kit
    Medical response kit that has extra consumables
    Flashlighs/head lamps
    Crank light/radio/USB charger
    1200 amp jump box
    Jump cables
    Basic mechanic tools
    Duct and electric tape
    Pry tool
    Gas can
    Traction pads
    Hammer
    Long straight screwdriver
    Several knives/multi-tools
    Wool blankets and space blankets
    Get Home bag with sturdy utility clothing, broken in boots, outerwear, local maps binoculars, leather and mechanics gloves, safety glasses, extra ammo for my ccw, water container, extra batteries,and sundry supplies.
    I recently invested in some Apache cases in yellow and orange, as well as a large Husky clear top tote to store it all in, in addition to a few ammo cans.
    While this seems excessive for many, especially considering that I live in the DelMarVa I-95 corridor, my life experiences have informed my actions. While most do not get the opportunities that I have been blessed with, there ARE things that one can do to learn how to prepare oneself.
    1) Take a medical response class
    2) Volunteer in some capacity at your local fire station or Civil Air Patrol
    3) Practice with the gear that you get or already have
    - Remember that it is not what you have but what you KNOW that serves you best in emergencies.
    - One note about Civil Air Patrol is that I was a member as a teenager and by the time I was 16 they had trained me for wilderness search and rescue , radio communications, camping/backpacking, appropriate dressing for inclement weather, and first aid, as well as begin my leadership training. CAP is a wonderful organization and more people should consider it.
    - Learn from mistakes that you walk away from. Once, while stationed in AK, I foolishly went on a solo atv trek and got very stuck. I only had a pocket knife, some rope, a zippy lighter, and bug spray on me. I had to walk 2+ hours to the nearest road to hitch a ride back to base to get assistance with getting my machine unstuck. I could have run into as cow moose or bear or I could have gotten a mechanical or other injury and been equipped to handle it. As a result, I became an EMT, packed more emergency supplies on my quad, and did not go solo unless I told another person where zi was going and my return eta.

      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perfect Chris! I think there are just 2-3 items I need to get from this list! I assume cotter pins are for if you are towing? Now that I have met the fire chief, hopefully I can renew my first aid and stop the bleed course! I have not been stuck like you have but many times I had wondered what I would do if my car didn't start or my snow machine died. Getting stranded has always been my fear and I have (for a long time) been smart enough to be prepared for that just in case scenario. At least as prepared as I could be! I may need to do a video on my GO BAG. And my vehicle kit that I covered in Episode 18. Love these type of comments! Good info! Thank you Chris! 🧡

    Maybe have a safety hook up on your roof. One side hook ropes on each end of the roof attached in the center and have a rope that hangs over the side you use to access the chimney. You can hook a safety belt to that . I do not like heights ! I don’t think I would be able to get on that roof.
    We moved in February and it took a few months before I realized we had left our fire extinguishers in the other house.

    Your idea of using the glass jars to rodent proof the food is a good idea. The sleeping bag, pillows, and blankets would make great places to nest if the rodents gnaw their way through the container. A couple cedar blocks in the container would deter them from getting into the container.

    Years ago when we lived in Hawaii. The inspector came to inspect the packers. One packer had put glass containers in with the clothes. They gotten in trouble. He said that if the glass ever breaks in clothing, blankets etc. they will be destroyed! You CANNOT get glass out of clothes. I would suggest wrapping old socks or other like baby blankets for your jars. So that way if a jar breaks you will not lose your sleeping bag or the other blankets. I learn that life lesson over thirty years ago. We were military, that is why we had inspection on our packing.

    I keep a jug of water ready inside and take it with me when I go to the car. Frozen water takes a lot of time and energy to become liquid water. Also, for batteries, I only use lithium batteries if they are going to be out in the cold. Regular batteries do not do well in our cold weather.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should do that but end up just keeping the jug under the heat vent. I keep most of my batteries in my "Go Bag" including the lithium chain saw battery. 😁

    Great reminder video. It’s stuff we all should know but sometimes forget. For instance, a few years ago we did a remodel and all the smoke detectors were taken down to spray texture. They are all, yes all sitting in a basket waiting to be put up again. I just reminded my husband. We just forgot about them because we thought of putting ADT’s smoke detectors up and time just got away from us with some family sickness and a death. It’s time to handle this. Take care ~Janet 😘

    another thing with older fire extinguishers , the dry chemical can cake up inside . I bang them with a wooder stick or a rubber hammer to break up the cake. An old fireman suggested this to me.

  • @Alli-lx6qy
    @Alli-lx6qy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the fire extinguishers. Turn your fire extinguisher upside down and put it next to your ear. You should be able to hear the powder sliding down to the other end. If you can't hear it, it means the powder has packed down and that the extinguisher may not be viable any more. One note, it looked like they could be serviced if you could find a company to service them. Depends on how old they are. Dates are normally etched on the bottom.

Then release ladder. You gave great tips! I even tell my daughter to have blankets and water in the car. I love the idea of storing food in glass jars. Good evening Alone, 😳Oh girl, be careful, that roof looks slippery. You should make your contractor build roof steps for you next year. I have those, they are mounted on to the roof, and it makes it a little less scary to climb on it. Put the camera away, and stay safe!! ❤Thankfully you have the neighbour. But please look into safety solutions, or if you can sweep the chimney from inside?? I also keep a fire blanket in my pantry. About the studded tires. Winter tires are mandatory from Nov. 1st until April 15th here. Studded tires are a must where I live, we get thick ice on my mountain, I always say its like driving a curling stone down my driveway, no control, just all about sliding down in the right lane! 😂 (Studs are preventing that!) My son just bought me a new flashlight, its rechargeable, I use it every evening when I let the dogs out. It is 2000 lumen. Its amazing. Not afraid of the dark anymore! 😂 I am just packing for a girls trip to the mountains tomorrow, we will hike the sherpa trail up to the Madonna with child statue in Norefjell, Norway. Not expecting great weather, snow on the top and even some fog, but the trail is clearly marked. Have a nice Sunday, will look up your recipe video - on Monday, guess I will pass out when I come home tomorrow. 😉

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A safer way to be on the roof has been texted to my contractor! 🤣 He may had mentioned it to me before and thought it wasn't needed. IT'S NEEDED!!! the wood stove pipe was fit just a bit too tight. I cannot take it out and there is no clean out installed. But I will get that corrected next year. I was told there are pro's and cons to studded tires but basically its just for ice. Like your curling stone road! 2000 lumens! Doesn't that get hot? My 500 lumen flashlights get hot. Also higher lumens can make even a tree reflect light back at you so be careful! Hope your trip was awesome!!🧡

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska Good morning Alone 😊 Off to work soon, still got my summertires on, and it is fog outside that freezes to ice.. Not looking forward to descending down the mountain.. (6 miles.) Will put in some extra time. 😳 Another (expensive) solution is to install a clean burning woodstove. I have one, and I have the chimney sweeper here every other year. 👍 About the flashlight, I just filmed a little video and posted it here on TH-cam. It is foggy and the fog freezes in the air, but you get an idea of how strong it is. I have not experienced that it gets hot. It has recharging batteries, which is good. 😊 My trip was definitely awsome, with the sherpastairs... thousands of them.. But we finally made it up to the ... Madonna.. (Fill in the blanks as you will, it was snow, slippery and foggy!) 😂 Today I am finally walking normally!

    Nice Job on the Fire Extinguishers. If you look at the side panel to see that your extinguishers are rated ABC which means that they CAN BE USED ON a grease fire which is a Class B (Flammable Liquid) fire.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have dealt with so many grease type fires that baking soda is far cheaper for me! 🤣 OK Type C is good for "any" grease then. Very good to know! Just be careful spraying so it doesn't push the pan over! 😉

    • @kevinwiley9696
      @kevinwiley9696 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska Hold on there….. Baking Soda is just OK to put out a grease fire. The biggest problem is that you have to be close to the pan to put it on it. A fire extinguisher allows you to back off and fight the fire from a short distance and then move in closer. Another problem is, where do most people store their little box (most not big enough to extinguish a fire) of baking soda? In the cabinet next to or right above the stove!! I recommend that you ALWAYS cook with a lid for the pot. If a grease fire occurs, slip the lid on the pot, turn off the gas and let it sit for a while. By the way, Class C is for energized electrical equipment/appliances. An ABC extinguisher is rated for Class A fires, Ordinary Combustibles (wood, paper, cloths etc). Class B is for Flammable Liquids (kitchen grease, gasoline, certain oils) and then Class C for the “energized” electrical such as TV’s, generators, Solar Panels and electrical circuit breaker panels etc.). If you kill the power to the electrical equipment, in most cases it reverts back to a Class A fire. Sound good??? Kevin

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinwiley9696 I always have a lid. First line of defense always. I keep my baking soda close by at all times. I have used it many times but may have been before it got really bad. But not next to the stove. I actually have a small hand held fire extinguisher that is like a can of RAID in the kitchen too. What I think is important here is training. Most people see a fire and try to get as close to the fire as they can before pulling the trigger (IF they have an extinguisher). And with a grease fire that could either spray the grease or knock over the pan. I have tried the "Bewitched" method but the nose wiggle does not work one bit!

    • @kevinwiley9696
      @kevinwiley9696 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska You may be right on a couple of points. The big thing to remember is all fire extinguishers ONLY WORK……IF YOU HAVE ONE and know how to use it. When there is a fire… THAT IS NOT THE TIME TO READ THE LABEL on how to use it!!! Also keep in mind, most extinguishers will empty pretty fast…. Faster than you think!! At that point don’t do what they do in the movies…..throw it at the fire!!!!😂😂. Thanks for letting me get on my teaching soapbox. I hope a tone of people learn from our conversations….and your vlogs!!!
