Ian mentioned some WWI era slang coming from the French. Here's another curiosity from back then. The Russians sent men to fight at Verdun and so the Russian army marched in the victory parade down the Champs-Élysées in Paris after the war. It's from those soldiers that the French got the word for a new type of cafe. Bistro. From the Russian word bystro which means something like, "Hey! Hurry up with my order!"
You may be right; I have not personally checked the etymology. But my source was Martin Sixsmith, one time BBC correspondent in Moscow, who did his postgraduate studies in St Petersburg and is a fluent Russian speaker. Quoted (roughly) from his book, "Russia, a 1,000 year chronicle of the Wild East", which I am part way through (well worth a read by the way). He was explicit that it came from WWI.
I think he may have been referencing the way the US services have incorporated borrowed French terms like enfilade/defilade/echelon/barrage et al. Then again, I thought that came from the Revolutionary era...
Uh-oh... Trump will see this video and now you will get a tweet at 3 a.m: "Nothing wrong with my hands. Nothing wrong with that gun. Sad little channel gets basic facts about WW1 - WRONG! Sad."
I don't have access to any ranges that have action matches, nor a shooting buddy with whom to do run jump stretch crawl fart matches, but on the small private 200M range where I'm able to shoot, I devise little two-or-three-gun period courses and shoot them for time against myself. So far, I've done various iterations of same-caliber 1892 & Blackhawks (I have sets in four calibers), M1 Carbine & 1911, Garand & 1911, iron-sight bolt actions and an M625-8JM with .45 ball in full moons, an M4 and an XD45, the same with an M5, an AR22 and a High Standard M100, and a "resistance fighter" version with a '60s scoped .22 semi-auto rifle and the High Standard M100. Although I dearly love the versions with the .30 Carbine and the Garand, the real hoot comes with the leverguns and revolvers, in .32-20, .357, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. Having just obtained a Mosin M91/30, I doubt I could find an 1895. I guess I should look for an S&W Model 3.
Hi, for anyone who wants to learn some of the WWI slang I suggest getting a copy of the reprinted "Lingo of No Man's Land" Written by Lorenzo N. Smith, an American who served with the Canadian army. Available on amazon.com or amazon.ca. It's an interesting read and gives some insight to what you would have heard in the trenches.
+PleaseDontWatchThese I'm not sure it is a disability. When a right handed person cycles a bolt gun they have to take there trigger hand of the small of the butt. A lefties trigger hand doesn't move. It might be an advantage. It doesn't seam to slow Ian down.
If it wasn't for your pony tail and sun glasses I would think you actually came from WWI, your facial hair style looks like it came from that era and I mean that in a good way. :-) The only thing that would have made this video better is if you had a M1917 revolver. Just like the Enfield was a substitute for the Springfield rifle, so was the M1917 for the 1911. Maybe next time you can do a WWI shoot like this but with the 1897 trench shotgun famous with American forces of the era.
Very nice Ian. Just a question, if you could carry any hand gun into World War One which one would it be? I'd ask rifle but you seemed on the edge of proposing marriage to that M1917 so I assume that's what it would be lol.
And I wondered how the (by design rather plain) uniform looked so awesome - tailor-made really makes all the difference! We're all used to adapting to Chinese S - XL size tables, but having something fit you precisely, is soo much better. Big thumbs up!
I own a Remington M1917 and it is my favorite rifle to shoot out of all the rifles I own. I am glad to see other people appreciate the rifle as much as I do.

Uh-oh... Trump will see this video and now you will get a tweet at 3 a.m:
"Nothing wrong with my hands. Nothing wrong with that gun. Sad little channel gets basic facts about WW1 - WRONG! Sad."
Highly overrated.
Now do it with a mosin nagant left handed. Fun times.

Forgotten Weapons Ah, I need to check full 30 more often.
The 2-gun matches your club puts on look to be major FUN, judging by this and prior videos.
Donald Trump hands, owwww snap!
Ian's Savage
I really was starting to become curious about all this neutrality in such polarized times 😁
Good shooting, especially on that 1911 with the standard sights. Great video, well done here.
That rotating target is really awesome! Nicely done sir
wait, your a lefty?! cool!
+Reaper af95 You must be new here :)
+Reaper af95 LEFTY MASTER RACE!
+Reaper af95 Ah, yes. Ian: A man of distinction and high intelligence.
+PleaseDontWatchThese I'm not sure it is a disability. When a right handed person cycles a bolt gun they have to take there trigger hand of the small of the butt. A lefties trigger hand doesn't move. It might be an advantage. It doesn't seam to slow Ian down.
Yes, he handles it quite well--better than I handle my Mosin.
Great Run Ian!
I have visited the trenches in Belgium & France and it is incredible what those soldiers had to go through.
If it wasn't for your pony tail and sun glasses I would think you actually came from WWI, your facial hair style looks like it came from that era and I mean that in a good way. :-)
The only thing that would have made this video better is if you had a M1917 revolver. Just like the Enfield was a substitute for the Springfield rifle, so was the M1917 for the 1911.
Maybe next time you can do a WWI shoot like this but with the 1897 trench shotgun famous with American forces of the era.
Ian I really enjoyed this episode. I like your combat simulated action shooting videos. Great job and thanks for the period uniform too.
Very nice Ian. Just a question, if you could carry any hand gun into World War One which one would it be? I'd ask rifle but you seemed on the edge of proposing marriage to that M1917 so I assume that's what it would be lol.
Any World War One era pistols and rifles to be clear.
+Microzombie M1917 for the rifle and at this point, probably either a Luger or 1907 Roth-Steyr for the pistol.
+Forgotten Weapons It would be almost impossible to make the stars go over with 8 or 9 mm
You've improved significantly with a pistol since your early videos, Ian. The texas-star especially was mighty impressive.
“I think it’s really cool” I think it’s wool and you’re in a dessert. Just saying.
And I wondered how the (by design rather plain) uniform looked so awesome - tailor-made really makes all the difference! We're all used to adapting to Chinese S - XL size tables, but having something fit you precisely, is soo much better. Big thumbs up!
I'd let Ian slay my Hun, if you know what I mean.
XD
I meant I'd let him poz my neg hole, but I see what you mean now.
+Phoenix Reignition Sponge your cannon?
Awesome! That was a lot of fun to watch, it looked like even more fun to participate.
Battlefield 1!
HYPE
+Stanley Marsh drugs are bad mkay...
I own a Remington M1917 and it is my favorite rifle to shoot out of all the rifles I own. I am glad to see other people appreciate the rifle as much as I do.
Anyone else notice the Donald Trump joke?
+Warren Rhinerson Yep. Trump is a short-fingered vulgarian.
Expect a wall around Arizona if he wins, the guy is awfully prickly about his hands/willie - executive order nr. M1CR0P3N15 x)
+Warren Rhinerson The sad thing is it's just rhetoric. The fact that you guys care so much about that is funny. I guess if you can't argue with his policy...
***** Wrong: feelthebern.org/bernie-sanders-on-gun-policy/
+AldanFerrox Did you even read it? "He voted in favor of requiring background checks to prevent firearms from getting into the hands of felons and the mentally ill, passing a federal ban on assault weapons, and closing loopholes which allows private sellers at gun shows and on the internet to sell to individuals without background checks."
And a little hammer bite for your troubles! Well done keeping pace on that right hand rifle action as a leftie.
Donald Trump hands, love it!
I can’t imagine how much more difficult it must be for Ian to shoot a right handed bolt action rifle left handed
Wow nicely done working the rifle as a lefty like a boss! I'm impressed!
These matches look like so much fun.
