  • Lisa Gade reviews the updated 13.3” HP Spectre x360, with a new smaller and lighter design, slim side bezels and 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake dual core i5 and i7 15 watt CPUs.
    **Update Jan. 2017: HP now offers models with an N-Trig active pen, and there's a 4K option too.
    ** Read our full written review here: www.mobiletechr...
    It’s available with your choice of 8 or 16 gigs of RAM and 256 or 512 gig PCIe NVMe SSDs. The x360 stays with the attractive and successful aluminum unibody design with polished sides and a unique double-curved rear edge. The new model has lost a half pound and weighs 2.8 lbs. making it competitive with the lighter Ultrabooks on the market, and it’s significantly less wide.
    As ever, it has a 360 degree hinge for use in laptop, tablet, stand and presentation modes. The laptop has a 1920 x 1080 gloss IPS touch screen, Windows Hello camera for facial recognition login, Intel 8265AC WiFi with Bluetooth, a backlit keyboard and a large glass trackpad. You still get a good deal for your money here with premium construction, two USB-C Gen 2/Thunderbolt 3 ports, a fast Core i7 CPU and NVMe SSD starting at $1,169. HP will also offer models with a Core i5 and 4 gigs of RAM for less money.
    Want it in a 15" size? Here's our review of the 15" Spectre x360 launched in early 2017: • Early 2017 HP Spectre ...

    I'm here after seeing those new MacBook prices. Seriously, a $200 increase for the version with NO Touch Bar and a processor category downgrade? They're out of their minds. Now I'm between the x360, the XPS 13 and the XPS 15.

      MobileTechReview It really is, but Apple had it coming. It's as if they wanted to push us out of the notebook market and into the tablet market themselves.

      Jake The new MacBook Pro without Touch Bar runs on a 15W chip, like the MacBook Air. The former entry level MBP ran on a 48W chip (edit: it's actually 28W), like the other 2016 models.

    • @salatapi
      @salatapi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake I would normally agree, but according to Apple the 15W model has the same 10 hour battery life as the 45W models. Considering the latter have an additional screen they don't sound that efficient. It is strange, to be honest.

    I've had this laptop since November 2016 and 4 years later, it has held up so well. I can see myself using this laptop for another 4 years.
    Its performance has not slowed down once at ALL and the battery life is still up to par compared to the first week of use. I used it throughout college for intense research papers, statistics programs, biology cancer programs, while the mac users had to use the PCs on campus. But do note that I did have the highest possible specs upon purchase: 16 GB, 1TB internal storage, and the Corei7 (7th gen) is still holding up in 2020 (I think we are in the 10th gen now?)
    I love Apple products, but this switch to PC 4 years ago has changed my perspective.

    *For the love of God, everyone*, if you're considering getting this or Especially the last generation of x360, be sure to get a long warranty. Otherwise, be prepared to fight HP tooth and nail as I did to fix it when multiple features inevitably begin to malfunction within a year of buying it.
    $1450 CAD and they wanted another $400 to replace the motherboard, which I eventually got them to waive after weeks of jumping through corporate hoops to get to the top manager who actually gave a shit.
    Though the laptop is very appealing, and the 360 degree hinge is useful the occasional time you want to impress a friend, I am STILL getting blue screens, stuttering, crackling and popping audio, and just don't have the time or energy to once again spend weeks contacting, sending it in again... Seriously don't recommend unless you're okay with a half working laptop for the majority of the time you own it.
    Also, search any of these issues on HP's own forums and you'll see the multitudes of other people describing these issues exactly. Pretty cool of HP to just make another newer, sleeker model of a laptop instead of addressing the issues likely thousands of customers already have with an older version- oh wait! They already have our money.

    I really love watching your tech reviews! I watch them even when I don't really intend to buy a new gadget. They're very detailed and in-depth. What I would really love to see though is for you to demo how these Windows machines work with certain apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D software like Autodesk Maya. What I want to see is how the trackpad works well on Photoshop for example when using gestures like pinch to zoom and two-finger canvas rotate (so we can compare it to Macbook Pro's trackpad for example) or perhaps how smoothly the video card handles viewport renders on Autodesk Maya. Something that will show us how the machine works for these use case scenarios.

    Personally I'd get the upgraded model. The 16GB/512GB version is $1299 whereas the 8GB/256GB is $1159. So for $140 more you get double the ram and double the storage space. No brained upgrade IMO especially since the ram is soldered on and that's a cheap upgrade for a 512GB SSD.

      @JEYMS 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Delwin Chowhan it is great! Build quality is awesome, the touch screen is working perfectly, it is not getting too hot even if I do some Solidworks (but the fan does crank up) and the keyboard is perfect.
      However, as I am really sensible to coil whine, I do hear some coil whine when the machine is pluged to the wall and the battery is full. The coil whinins is commig from the power brick AND the computer. The coil whine is also getting louder if you shut down the computer and let it pluged in while the battery is full.
      For me it is a bit of a deal breaker because I just cant stand any coil whine when I'm working on a project in a silent room.
      But if it doesn't bother you, then the computer is really a good one !
      Hope it helps you decide!

    I just got hosed with this as I purchased an x360 OLED and the website and all ads indicated support for the active pen/stylus. However, as noted here and as many are finding out, there is no more support for it in these new versions. I don't understand that at all. It is an awesome, lightweight, sleek, powerful laptop that just shot itself in the foot by removing an entire use-case for tablet and 2-in-1 functionality by removing active pen support, especially when its main competitors have it. Capacitive styli are simply not the same for note-taking or sketching. Just make sure y'all realize the lack of active pen support before purchasing!

    Lisa, I appreciate that you check the hardware white point of the displays you review. I have issues with blue light for insomnia and I have found that there is no substitute for a screen with a low white point. For many devices, you are the only source I can find. I hope you review the Yoga 910 soon. I like the specs on that, but if it has a high white point (or some other furtive inherent vice), I will be getting this Spectre.

    Great review, I was concerned when I purchased my Yoga 910 that the HP Spectre x360 was a better choice but at the time was not available. From this review, with the exception of the thunderbolt ports, the 910 does seem to match and best in some respects (910 512gb SSD is a lot faster), the HP Spectre.
    Still wondering what your 910 review will report as I do hold your reviews as one of the most reliable online sources. :)

      Hi Patrik, I can't choose between the Hp x360 and the Lenovo 910, also I can't find any reviews of the Lenovo, how is it? I love the hinge, I'm scared that the one in the Spectre will brake or become soft with usage.

      Here is the only other review I have seen:
      www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-yoga-910
      So far I am loving the 910, I have owned the original Yoga Pro, then Yoga 2 Pro and the 910 feels so much more premium than those. Also battery life is in a different league. I did a couple of battery run down tests using 1080p video looped and it ran for 10.5 hours at 50% brightness with Wifi enabled. The same test on the Yoga 2 Pro (which I still own) ran only for slightly under 6 hours. The only negative is no thunderbolt which makes it slightly less future proof.

    • @Alessio.B87

      Correct, I bought a USB C hub with USB 3, card reader and HDMI out, so I am covered. What I do like about the 910 vs the HP is the standard USB 3 port is on the right hand side as this is where I normally plug a mouse into if I want a rollerball attached and so it is convenient for a right handed person vs. on the left with the HP.

    It looks like the keyboard has the same finish as the previous version. If that is the case, a heads up to people with longer fingernails - after a while, there is a good chance certain keys will have the finish start to rub completely off. This happened with my friend's x360, and she was quite disappointed.

      the touchscreen portion can take up a lot of battery. I have the hp spectre x360 (generation before this) and battery life can be up to 10 hours if I don't use the touch screen, but when I use it for classes (I'm a student) with a combo of writing on the screen and constantly using it as well as in general, I get about 8 hours. If I only use the tablet mode and use it constantly (online shopping or studying and writing on it, it can be like 6 hours). Just depends what you want it for. I have found that using the tablet mode is really nice for viewing though and doesn't take up that much battery (for example Netflix or something)

    Hello Lisa ! I bought my HP 15 spectre x360 about 1 month ago - the mode (I7 6560+16 GB RAM with Intel IRIS Graphics)
    I must say im deeply disappointed , and here is why :
    1.first of all i am still having an issue with my touch pad , right click does not always register , and sometimes it's grasped as a left click. i have updated all drivers , nothing helped !
    2. the sound disappears after wakening from sleep mode. i know sounds strange , but it forces me to restart the laptop , again i have downloaded all drivers , and nothing seems to help ! i was shocked to see after a little research that this problem is common among spectre users and no one could come with a solution so far.
    3. the machine is shockingly slow and browsing using chrome puts lot of pressure on the CPU - The CPU is throttling very often and its so frustrating.
    4. battery life is far from expected ! im getting at best 3 hours without running heavy stuff , i can't believe i bought this laptop for about 1700 euro ( in Berlin ) .
    there are few pluses though : the 4k display is very nice , the laptop is light and portable and the keyboard feels excellent, but you guys dont do my mistake ! i will never approach HP again.
    I would be so thankful if you can offer me some tips to improve the drawbacks i mentioned. thank you in advance

    Hi Lisa, there has been several reports on hp forums on the battery drain issue on the spectre x360. Reports are that even after shutdown (powered off, not sleep nor hibernating) the battery drains and loses charge overnight gradually. It would be great if you could confirm this based on your observation. Thanks heaps!

    When is this being released - the HP websites still have last gen. No active pen support?! Why?! Is there any chance they will change their minds? Seems like a crazy decision. Does the Yoga 910 have it? Do they no longer do it in charcoal? I loved that colour.

    • @petehoram8342
      @petehoram8342 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why are HP and Lenovo doing this to their higher end hybrid models? Makes the want to get a surface book instead.

    • @petehoram8342
      @petehoram8342 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I was dead set on buying the new macbook pro until they announced the pricing and lack of features. I have decided I want to give a hybrid a try for touch screen music producing. I wouldn't say no compromises given you only get a dual core and only an ok graphics card for £2250. In geekbench it only manages to double the performance of my 8 year old 15 inch macbook whereas the new apple, dell, alienware and razer manage 4-5 times as much power. I can't wait until we start to see quad core 2-in-1 convertibles. Actually the Vaio Z Canvas seems like the only one I've come across. I wish the surface was available in 15 inch too. I must admit i'm also tempted by the surface studio despite the low spec to price ratio.

    • @petehoram8342
      @petehoram8342 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I think you're in the same boat as me. I want a laptop that looks great, is well crafted and has awesome spec for an expensive but fair-ish price. It's very hard to find. I was also thinking I wanted either an top end XPS 15 (4K Touch, 1TB SSD and 32GB Ram) for much cheaper than the base model Macbook Pro or the Razer Blade 2016 which comes with Nvidia 10 series. I think it might be better to wait until Dell announce their new XPS convertible and their new Kaby lake 15 inch XPS. I decided I wanted to give touch a try though so thought about the surface book but wanted a cheaper alternative as they seem way overpriced for the spec (like the macbook). At least the pen should be excellent and you get to use the new surface dial.

    • @petehoram8342
      @petehoram8342 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Yes OSX, like Apple's new products, has barely had any innovation in years. Every update i'm like oh woow...a new font. Just playing it safe and ripping people off. I think i've convinced myself to give the surface book a try. I was a little tempted by the Vaio Canvas since you can get 15 inch quad core with active stylus. Really great specs, but I'm not sure I trust Vaio for quality after previous sony ones i've owned and the support will be non existent.

      How do you use that much RAM with AutoCAD? I've had an entire aircraft open in AutoCAD at work and it was only using 5 GB. I sort of get MatLab, load in large enough data sets and you can be up to 20 GB of memory usage in a hurry. That said, you really should avoid AutoCAD if you have the choice, almost everything else is better than it now including Autodesk's own Inventor which is still below average (and some free options).

    I don't understand why these rotating convertibles have wedge shapes. It makes it really ugly in tablet mode. They should just fill out that taper and maybe use that extra space to cram in a slightly larger battery.

      Thought it was just me. The Microsoft Surface book doesn't have the wedge shape, but it has that weird hinge. I hate the space you get between the two pieces when in tablet mode. It feels nothing like a tablet, it feels like a laptop folded backwards.

    Hi Lisa,
    Is this ultrabook equipped with DDR3 or DDR4 RAM? Is DDR4 advantageous over DDR3 when it comes to onboard graphic and multitasking? For instance, does the Intel 620 Graphic performs better with DDR4 over the DDR3? Thank you

    • @Bayonet1809
      @Bayonet1809 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple answer: This has DDR3, and yes to both of your other questions.
      Extended answer: This has LPDDR3 as with all 15w (and 5w) U-series Skylake and Kaby Lake CPU equipped machines. LPDDR4 would be only slightly faster for multitasking, and would also improve iGPU performance, but the main advantage for portable devices is that it expands RAM density, allowing for single channel configurations much greater than 8GB.
      Expect to see greater RAM quantity available in the future in products such as these. LPDDR4x from Samsung also has the potential to massively reduce power consumption by ~50% over LPDDR3, so this could be another benefit for future devices.
      I expect DDR4 to be exclusively used with Intel's next generation 10nm Cannonlake CPUs, expected in the latter half of next year.

      The Dell Active Stylus 750-aagn is the stylus everyone reccomended for the previous model. Honestly, the newer model is so much better, that if you don't hold taking notes to such a high regard, it's so much more worth it: lighter, thinner, sleeker, better edge-to-edge display, slightly better processor, better keyboard, and much better speakers.
      I have the past model and originally got it because I wanted to be able to take notes as well. However, I mostly type notes, but wanted the option for the pen because I take Arabic in college and wanted to be able to write instead of using a notebook. But honestly, it's so much more awkward and difficult than a real notebook and pen, that the only thing you can really use this well for is written notes. Language, math, and science - you're gonna be slowed down.
