  • It's time to finally figure out which vehicle is the best, the tried-and-true station wagon, or the ready-for-soccer-practice crossover. Our Showdown is on the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Highline and 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
    Special thanks to Volkswagen St-Hyacinthe for making this episode of TestDrive Showdown possible with the use of their 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Highline R-Line. Find out more about their dealership here: www.vwst-hyacinthe.qc.ca/en
    We always do things differently here at TestDrive, and this Showdown is no different. Volkswagen has been making station wagons for decades, and the Mk7 Golf Alltrack is one of the most popular so far, but does it have what it takes to continue selling well when crossovers offer what Canadian buyers ultimately want? We wanted to find out once and for all.
    We've taken the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Highline with optional R-Line package and put it up against the 2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack with optional driver's assistance package. On the exterior both vehicles have adaptive front LED headlights, halogen fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry with push-button start, panoramic sunroofs, heated outside mirrors, and LED rear lighting.
    Safety tech on the Golf includes blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning with emergency braking, rain sensing wipers, automatic high beams, and lane keep assist. The Tiguan also has the option for a driver's assist package which would add those features along with a 360º surround view camera and remote starter. The Tiguan also comes with a power rear lift gate and power folding mirrors.
    Inside both vehicles have similar technology, with an 8" infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM Radio, Navigation, and a Fender audio system, 9 speakers on the Golf Alltrack and 8 on the Tiguan. Both vehicles also have selectable drive modes, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, power driver's seat, rear air vents, power up and down windows, and LED interior lighting. The Tiguan also adds a USB and 12V outlet in the rear seating area, VW's digital cockpit, and a heated steering wheel.
    We also go over the different dimensions for both vehicles inside and out and how they might affect the overall space either vehicle has.
    We take both the Tiguan and Golf Alltrack on road tests around Saint Hyacinthe to talk about how each of their inline 4 turbocharged engines perform, along with their 4motion all-wheel drive. We go over the rest of the driving dynamics and performance of each vehicle to figure out which one might be the best option for you.

    I've had an Alltrack for almost a year now. It's certainly a sporty driving machine with enough space for me, and I'd imagine for most people with smaller kids. However, if you have a couple of kids that are getting older, it's just a but too small overall as a "primary" vehicle. The back seat legroom is really limited if the driver has the seat back anywhere past mid way. Also, I'd think if you load it up with enough stuff for a road trip, the rear window will be blocked rather quickly. Having said that, mine is our secondary vehicle that I use primarily for commuting back and forth to work and as an around town run a bout. For that role, it's awesome. However, our primary vehicle is an 2013 Acura RDX. If we were in the market to replace our Acura - I'd certainly look at the Tiguan.

      We were really impressed with the Tiguan, I think VW made the right call to sell the LWB version in North America, though we do miss the Touareg.

    My brain tells me a crossover makes a lot of sense but my heart tells me to buy a wagon with the manual transmission. The 2019 Alltrack or Golf Sportwagon will sadly be the last such vehicles with that option sold in North America.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like VW will be pulling the plug on them for our market. The Buick Regal TourX is dead in the US, leaving really only luxury vehicles offering proper wagons left. We've got the 2020 Subaru Outback booked in the new year but its more of a crossover.

    • @aimxdy8680
      @aimxdy8680 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crossovers don’t make sense, they are the most useless vehicles on earth, crossovers are jacked up hatchbacks with down syndrome. Wagons are safer with lower centre of gravity, more efficient and offer just as the same space while being better in performance and efficiency, crossovers suck at offroad a subaru outback is more capable than every crossover offroad.

    In the US, we can get the S model of the Alltrack that comes without a sunroof. If I went for an Alltrack for my next vehicle, I would get that model as it comes very well equipped for a good price. There are a lot of unhappy Alltrack owners on the vwVortex forum that have had their panoramic sunroofs leak and soak the headliner. No thanks. In general, I would prefer to not have a panoramic sunroof here in Florida. Most of the pano roofs have translucent rolling sunshades that let too much light and heat through. The VW panoramic roofs are like this. Regular sunroofs are fine as they usually do not leak and they have heavier sliding sun shades that can completely block the light. Mazda CX-5 has a regular sunroof. The Subaru Forester has a "large" sunroof that still has a solid sunshade, not the rolling translucent type. Here in the US, the Honda CR-V has a regular size sunroof as well although the reported CR-V oil dilution issue might be an issue down the road if the engine starts to take wear.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do try to talk about this on the show when it comes up. Manufacturers like Chrysler are one of the only ones that allows the sunroof to be added as a standalone option on any trim, at least when it comes to the half-dozen vehicles we've featured. Some people love having a sunroof, others don't, and if the sunroof is mandatory on a specific trim it can be a problem for some.

    • @ryans6699
      @ryans6699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the sunroof’s are prone to leakage, unfortunately. I am told that it leaks due to the small roof drains getting clogged with debris easily. When I test drove one with a sunroof the spare tire well had 1/2” of water sloshing around in it. So check this if you are looking to purchase one. It’s too bad because the view from these sunroof’s is excellent.

    Interestingly, I own an '18 Alltrack and my roommate has an '18 Tiguan R Line. One thing that I will say about the Alltrack that was missed is that the front seats are much more comfortable, they're a bit softer and provide a heck of a lot more side bolstering. Also, the Alltrack has a self parking feature that the Tiggy does not. I do wish that VW would have put the digital cockpit in the '18 Alltrack (the same year it went into the R), especially when they're asking $40,000 for the top trim. Another thing the Alltrack has going for it, is that this will be the last year for them in the North American market so, if you can still get one, it's got that rarity to it. Also, the DSG on the Alltrack has paddle shifters where as the Tiguan does not and one negative if you opt for the DSG, is that the required DSG service every 60,000kms is a bit pricey, so be prepared for that.

    It‘s quite similar to the Ford Connect Custom but available as an awd.

      Unfortunately VW doesn't sell that one here, we have a pretty limited lineup compared to Europe. Funny you mention the Ford Connect, we have one booked next week configured as a passenger van. AWD would be great for our climate, I believe only the Toyota Sienna comes with AWD here in Canada.

    My wife's old XC70 just left on a CAA flatbed to head out to the mechanic's shop. So here I am considering which car will potentially replace it. New Volvos are not like old Volvos in term of quality and reliability, so here I am looking at the Alltrack and Tiguan. Madame's face lit up when I told her the Alltrack is available with a manual, so I know which way this is likely to go.

    I've owned a 2017 Alltrack and loved it. There is just the wife and I and it's been wonderful. On occasion we have taken adult passengers and then it's a big problem as there is just not enough leg room. Here we are in Jan '2020 and I have 98'000 klm on the clock and ready to buy another but I found out from my dealer that 2019 is the last year VW is making them so I did the on line thing and started to look at the Tiguan and could not believe the features it has (I am looking at the highline model). Remote starter, seat memory, auto braking, digital dash, remote rear hatch (big one for the wife), heated steering wheel, much more rear passenger room, more cargo space etc plus it's higher up. It's not as "sporty" as the Alltrack but I am seriously going to have a hard look at it. Thanks for making the excellent comparison video as it was just what I was looking for and it was made in Canada :) Two thumbs up.

VW is losing their minds right now as they plan on NOT bringing the standard MK8 Golf (hatch and wagon) and the just revealed ID.3 either to North America because Muricans "don't want" hatches. Those might just be the best sellers in VW Canada's lineup among the Jetta and Tiguan. With sky high demand for affordable and decent range EVs, VW loves giving the middle finger to millions of people by not bringing the ID.3 to NA, especially after screwing them with Dieselgate.
