Things We Said Today, Paul shows a maturity one usually does not see in someone so young. It is one of my favorite songs.

Sometimes we forget how young they were..John at 23 and Paul at 21 George 21 and Ringo 23, at the time the album was released. Just magic!

Hey Luke. “Things We Said Today” is a favorite of mine. I love the changes and Paul’s lead vocals with the harmonies sprinkled in at the places where John joins in. “When I Get Home” has some great vocals from John and is not bad for a song rarely ever heard apart from playing the album in its entirety. I love the rawness in John’s voice in earlier songs. Thanks for continuing this Beatles journey. 🌺✌️

I had always thought I heard George’s voice in this song. Even when I made my comment I wondered about it. I should’ve just left John’s name out of it. I just love the harmonies they created regardless of which blend of their incredible voices was used. Thanks for clearing that up. I love the little bits of Beatles’ trivia that I continue to learn even all these years later. I’m 70 years old and still feel like a teenager when I hear them. The Beatles were just an incredible gift to the world.

Nice analysis! “Things We Said Today” is one of my faves! Some of McCartney’s earlier, less recognized songs are the gems for me. Many are deceptively dark, covered by his sweet vocals. (More to come.) You really get the story of what was happening between him and Jane, how the dynamics of their relationship was changing, as the years moved on. Way ahead of his time, that McCartney 🫶🏽

"Things We Said Today" is one of my very very favorite Paul songs. I just close my eyes and sing along with it. He was and IS my favorite Beatles through the nearly 60 years of being a fan. "When I Get Home" is usually considered a "deep cut" because it is so seldom heard these days, unless someone or a reactor plays the entire album, as you did. I always get excited whenever a TRIBUTE band includes "When I Get Home" in their sets.....as few Beatles' tributes or cover bands do.

I love When I Get Home for 3 reasons: 1) Lennon's vocal, of course but 2) Paul's bass guitar is so powerful and there's so much low-end on this song! He's really laying down thick! Last, 3) Ringo's kick ass drumming! What a badass song and too bad they didn't use this song, at least in 1964, for a closer to their show. What a ROCKER!!

Really enjoying taking this journey with you. It's always fun for this long time fan to see someone discovering the Beatles and their music. You are very insightful and I love your enthusiasm. I think you are finding that you've found a treasure that you will savor for the rest of your life. Sometimes you'll listen to whole albums and other times just certain songs, but it's always great to open that treasure chest again. We Beatles fans are always happy to find a new fan. I think you've listened to enough to be called one of us. Someday you should check out some of their interviews, both funny and serious.

I think of When I Get Home as a companion piece to A Hard Day's Night. They are both about coming home to a loved one after working/touring long hours. But the infidelity reading might have some merit as well.

You should listen to Things We Said Today on the "Eight Days a Week" soundtrack from the documentary that came out several years ago! The Beatles played this at the Hollywood Bowl and the difference between the softer and louder sections DROPS LIKE A BOMB!! The Beatles crush that volume and intensity change and the audience goes absolutely wild! It's like the girls were all waiting for that change because they are relatively quiet during the verses, but they go nuts at the chorus/bridge section! You should hear it!

I can hear in my head the early Bee Gees doing a good version of 'When I Get Home'. Surprised they didn't tackle it.
Insane that it was just an album track for the Beatles and never performed live. Could've been a single.

It’s very melancholy and almost insecure about what may happen in the future or the relationship.
There’s a song on the same album called I’ll Be Back which to me feels like a cousin to things we said today.

1964; I was 12 yrs old. Went for a train trip with my family from TX to Chicago. On a cab ride from Dearborn Station, we noticed this line of people MANY blocks long, leading to the theater where the marquee announced premier of A Hard Days Night movie. That scene of kids in a seeming never ending line has stayed vivid in my mind all these years later

IMO "Things We Said Today" is very progressive for 1964. The darker tone and lower vocal range are different for Paul, and then that shift to the major key for the middle 8 -- it's just an amazing piece of songwriting for '64. It's cool that they included it in their live sets at the time, although I think it was ahead of its time for the teeny boppers in the crowd. "When I Get Home" is a great rocker, but it's really all about the vocal. It also encapsulates that nasty rhythm style John brought to pop music in the early 60's.

*'Things we said today'* is very poignant if we actually think those things happen to anyone, someday we will remember good, or why not bad things we said today to someone we love and then we have happy memories, or regrets.
*'When I get home'* that long for arriving home is poignant and the vocal performance wonderful, his raw voice is exceptional 7:42 'tonight' awesome!!!

"Things we said Today" is sweet. But it's not my favorite. I love "When I get Home!" It's fast, catchy & I can relate to time I wanted to get off work & go home to talk to my lover or even just a close friend. "Bloody" isn't a curse word here in the USA. Just sounds very British & kinda cute - no offense.

IMO, Lennon songs' domination made this album best of the Beatles. Though the only next one contains no McCartney songs that annoy me (except for Kansas City, but it's a cover). At least, thanks god, "A Hard Day's Night" has no equivalent of some "Honey Pie".
P.S. About Lennon. It's interesting how many really great singers hate their voices. I think this is related to the character trait, when some people do not value what they got. Forever dissatisfied with themselves.

Things We Said Today is my favourite song on the album. It’s beautifully melancholic and it has an almost haunting sound to it which is more usually associated with John but which Paul dips into several times over the next few years. Despite it only being 1 of 3 Paul songs on the album, for me it’s by far the most mature.
PS - John *was* a total dog. Constantly cheated on Cynthia.

I am a bit disappointed that you have also succumbed to the traditional notion of Paul as romantic and John as rocker, though at least you come at it from a vocal performance POV, since that is its origin. We have been conditioned to believe this because of who was selected to sing which rendition in the early years. It was determined that Paul's voice was best suited to ballads and John's to rockers. But in terms of natural sensibilities, they are of course, both, and any look at their careers would show that John's love songs are more heartfelt and Paul's rockers are more rocking. Paul's love songs are more romantic in that they cater to a sense of romance; they're idealized and chauvinistic, very much a part of their cultural context. John's are more personal and insightful about relationships. Though in songs like Things We Said Today, Paul does show a real maturity and insight as well. I didn't mean to suggest he was less insightful, not at all. I was just trying to say that he is more sentimental, while John is more sensitive. People love Paul's love songs because they are universal. People love John's love songs because they are personal.
