- Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Saturday (Apr 16) chaired a news conference on the selection of Finance Minister Lawrence Wong as the leader of the People's Action Party's (PAP's) fourth-generation (4G) team. Mr Wong and former PAP chairman and ex-Cabinet minister Khaw Boon Wan also spoke at the news conference.
Mr Khaw said an overwhelming majority of stakeholders chose Lawrence Wong as the preferred 4G leader; 15 out of 19 voted for him, and no one else got more than two votes.

My congratulations to PAP for making an excellent choice . The COVID experience was a rather stressful period, probably exaggerated cause i am single and having lost my job halfway through the pandemic however whenever i heard Mr Lawrence Wong during his daily brief on the COVID situation , i realized that there were so many fellow Singaporeans who probably were worse off than me and the stressful conditions under which Mr Lawrence Wong and his team were operating 24/7. 365 days a year in order to serve their fellow countrymen and women . Listening to his daily briefs, i sensed a true patriot who loves his country.

i will only vote for a political party that can govern Singapore well. Unless there is an absolutely credible and capable alternative (plus corruption-free), I dare not vote for any other party other than PAP. I am not saying I die die must vote for PAP forever. I simply mean I can't risk the future of my country and children. It is my right as a citizen to choose. If anyone doesn't agree with me, so be it. So, there is no need to attack my personal choice. We are only being prudent. PAP has proven time and time again that they are up to any tasks in protecting Singapore and Singaporeans. The trust we have in PAP is in her 57 years of good track record in her efficiency and effectiveness, until some other party can outdo them, I’ll continue to support PAP.

@@bell-xk5dd So you will wait until Singapore collapses. As it is, the economy is supported by a large pool of migrants with many converted into citizens. The GDP should have been worse without the migrants.
Even including the migrants the GDP growth per annum is less than 4%, thus showing the ineffectiveness of the PAP's management of the economy.
It is no consolation that the GDP would have been worse without the migrants. Now the GDP has to be shared with al larger pool of people giving rise to a lower average for all. Making it worse the disparity of income has increased.
So how effective is the PAP now, unlike the old days when the GDP per annum growth is often above 15% without the large increase of migrants.

Not being a Singaporean, I have always viewed Singapore as an extremely progressive nation with a huge talent pool of able and more importantly, untainted political leaders.
Singapore since 1965 under LKY, has transcended all political and ethnic hurdles to become a well respected 1st world nation.
It's easy to talk and say something seeing from outside. Same goes to every person. Its always greener from outside.

Hope Mr Lawrence Wong is not appointed as a seat warmer for an eventual Lee family member in 10 years. LHL should not be senior minister in the cabinet but remain as a consultant only to be consulted upon in a passive position holding no authority over cabinet decisions whatsoever. MR Lawrence Wong must be given free rein to take Singapore into a difficult probably different world political landscape. He should prove himself capable to navigate post Covid world and balance relationships between nations to benefit the people bring harmonious living, first class standard healthcare, equitable wealth distribution, jobs for seniors upholding their dignity at workplace and in society, a fair just treatment of freedom of expression, defeat and fence off foreign interference, manage people’s aspiration to be a world citizen to be relevant in world economy and global politics. I may be wrong, and if I am, please ignore my contribution. In the previous two occasions, the Singapore founding Father, Mr. lKY was around. There “were probably” several consultations and consensus had been made ahead of the meetings by senior Lee, who was very influential, somewhat participated in running Singapore behind the curtain. Time has changed, Singapore, as they put it “is kinder, gentler, but most importantly is more open, forward thinking, and susceptible”. PM Lee Hsien Loong is a very patriotic, intelligent, and kind man. He understands all the elements and dynamics among his younger party leaders. His main objective is to preserve the unity as well as to identify a new Singapore PM through the process that serves the objective. He and several senior members are still there several more years with new government and cabinet. It is not Mr. Wong who will run Singapore, he is a new facade of the team. Transition will take years so he will have time to mature and prove himself. This is Singapore style, and as someone has put it “Singapore is governed similar to a Business Corporation”.

As a democracy, singaporeans are conferred basic rights, a system of citizen-support that boasts superiority to other western states. To reply your premise, leaders all over the world do not hold an election every single time a decision needs to be made. Autocracy discards the right for others to vote, and at the same time, a compromisation of basic rights. These are the differences. Regarding the moral courage to do the right thing: This is not to be confused with autocracy, the implication if for leaders to execute orders incorruptibly with the foresight that benefits the people. As children, we did not like vegetables, yet our parents knew they were good for us - Not the best analogy but you get the point.
