    Just watching the cattle shed video. I was so releaved to see the mats where the cows lay down . I didnt see them before and thought they were laying on the concrete. You are so compassionate and kind and respectful with the animals. The ladies as you say. What a joy to follow your farm and life. 😊

      We have rubber mats throughout all our houses, i’d never let an animal lie on concrete. That’s just wrong!
      Before mats came along we used to bed them twice a day with fine saw dust. Thanks for following Karen 👍

    All good young man. Trees for shelter, I can tell which to avoid because they are a pain in the rump steak in Autumn and why. Beech trees, great growers once they get established and provide good shelter, however, the leaves are strong and come off late in the season and the beechmast (Nut like seeds) add to the mess. Sycamore, grow fast and like weeds. They offer no really good shelter in winter, the leaves are quite messy but the green slimey algae is an issue, but by far the worst issue with Sycamore is the sap. It feels like tiny little rain drops and is very sticky. Oak, too long to get going and no real shelter. Horse Chestnut, leaves come out early and drop early but really good shelter. Conkers are good for a bit of fun but it may take ten years to get them! Ash tree, grows fast, leaves come on mid term and droop off by the billion very quickly and quite quickly. Excellent logs for the fire though @20% moisture when cut fresh!
    Personally I would go for a Blackthorn (nice white flower display in late Spring prior to leaf breakout) and or Hawthorn Hedge with Sloe bushes mixed in. Great diversity and support for wildlife and shelter and you might even get a grant too?

      @@IFarmWeFarm You are welcome young man. Just wish I had my own farm ha ha ha ha.... not that I mind working on other folks places which I do. Anyway, you know what I would do so lets see what other folk suggest. It's an interesting question you put to us all. Best regards, Jon.

      Denis Murphy yes I’ll actually be using a 12ft steel girder and drive it down it2 the channel with the digger then concrete it in place, can build the pier around it then

      Careful planting trees underneath esb overhead power line. They will cut them down If they grow up towards the lines. Hedging should be fine though.

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mark Corr they will never be allowed to grow that height anyhow, so that if they did fall they would not hit the shed. 👍

  • @davidhogan329

    The timber you have underneath the feed barriers is a waste of time. We had them and they cracked and wore out over time. After that we put concrete blocks in and they just fell out. This summer we are putting mass concrete ones. They are the only job

    • @IFarmWeFarm

      Brian Daly yes sure, as long as there’s no downward drafts, opening is facing away from the main prevailing winds. Cattle do much better with plenty of ventilation.

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brewery all the pipes to the shed are buried nearly 3 feet, the only pipe that could freeze is up to the drinkers and the drinkers themselves, if that happens I use a gas torch to heat all

    • @IFarmWeFarm

      Doyler 1979 it’s grant spec so it should be fine, it’s actually is a lot thicker as you go in2 it. The yard at home would be of similar thickness and never cracked over the ten years it’s in, Hopefully it will hold up as good 🤞
